On graduation day, a reflection on why I'm a professor:

I am where I am because of people at every stage of my life who have given me the opportunity, the support, the resources, the environment, the encouragement, to be successful. They've shared their knowledge, their experiences, they have been patient with me, and they have believed in me. Teachers, parents, friends, community, professors, mentors, colleagues. You bet I worked hard, but that hard work was possible and fruitful because of the environment that was built around me.

And now I get to do that for other people - AS A JOB. How fucking cool is that‽

AlanSill,
@AlanSill@mast.hpc.social avatar

@ricci Exactly how I feel. They didn't tell me about the bureaucracy that would come with the package, though!

Here's our latest training/outreach cluster based on Radxa X2L SBCs
4 nodes of quad-core X86 Celeron
8 GB memory/node
PoE local power control through switch
Rocky 9.3 OS
Warewulf 4.5 for node provisioning
We’ll soon add (as on our other ones already built and to come) Slurm, Spack, and a suite of HPC applications
Head node has 2TB of NVMe storage nfs mounted to the worker nodes, which are diskless and stateless
Total cost about $700 (full parts list and accounting to come)
Note the carry handle!

Description of cluster is in the text of the post

@gubi They're coming! We put this together based on earlier efforts explicitly to make it so that it could be reproduced easily by others. There's nothing really unique about what we are doing, but we tried to make a small package with a minimum of special parts.

The Learn R Through Examples by Xijin Ge, Jianli Qi, and Rong Fan provides an introduction to data analysis with R. The book covers the core topics of data analysis using different datasets, from simple and clean datasets to messy and big datasets. 🧵👇🏼

Question for the USB-C cognoscenti if any out there: how can I take a raw 12V source and feed it correctly into a board that expects 12V on its USB-C power connector? Is this possible?

(Inquiry): Please help me install this software.
(Response): Sure! That can be installed via conda or spack. Follow these instructions.

(I): I don't have conda or spack installed.
(R): No problem! Here is where you can get these on our cluster.

(I): I can't seem to locate those directories. Here's a screenshot of the errors. I don't even see those directories.
(R): Hmm, that's not our login node. What cluster are you on? Run these commands.

(I): (Provides address)
(R): That's not our cluster!

I hereby propose designating March 29 to be Andres Freund Open Source Safety Day and am open to suggestions as to how this should be celebrated. Sorry @AndresFreundTec for your mentions! At minimum, you should be awarded permanent free registration to any software or tech conference you choose to attend. Thanks!

I have discovered a very useful way to enable the rootfs partition to be transferred to an NVMe drive that resides behind a PCIe switch when using a Raspberry Pi CM4 on a carrier board that would presumably work on Raspberry Pi 5's also, but the solution does not fit in the space available in this margin.

Hmmm, every server I'm getting spam from has a new user in their public directory named yqqwe, and each one of these users is following mastodon_admin_yggwe on a single-user instance mastodon.tinynews.org. One can look at the 924 followers of this admin and they all are named yqqwe and they are all on servers I've been getting from.

One of the reviewers for the manuscript on introducing CPU support in asked for scalability tests on more than 8 cores (when I originally wrote the whole thing the only decent CPU I had at hand was an AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core Processor). It's a reasonable request, so I've been running tests on the new server we got at , that sports a dual AMD EPYC 7713 64-Core Processor. The most interesting so far has been that GPUSPH does seem to scale decently, but the baseline is lower.

Your occasional but persistent reminder that there is no AI, there is only obscure scripting with unexplored failure outcomes. Oh, and there is now plagiarism-as-a-service to muddy things up further.

Give it up! You are only wasting time, effort, money, energy, and contributing to warming of the planet.
