Taking FireFox for a spin, to see what the fuss is all about.

@Binder I’ve used Firefox for years, way before the latest hoopla. Quite like it. 👍

OKAY, it has taken all of the brain cell, and quite some time.

BUT, I think I have successfully reworked the body charts for this shawl to make the increases not as steep.

AAAAND, I realized I have some yarn in the same yd/g as the yarn I want to buy.

So I'm going to swatch! I thiiink I can then calculate the g it increases every repeat. AND how many repeats for the depth I want.

So I can figure out how much to order.

We can do it, WITH THE POWER OF MATHS!

Well shit. According to the tracking #, my Knitpicks order was delivered "to a neighbor, as requested". Which is bullshit, because I DIDN'T DO THAT. In fact, I was home when they said it was delivered.
Cripes.

Oh oh oh, I think I'm onto something with this pattern.

(I am not a pattern designer, I struggle to see how things come together, but let's try anyways)

This pattern increases by 3 on each side during the body section.
The body section is divided into two charts. You are meant to knit A, B, A. And you can increase the size by adding another B, A repeat, as long as you finish on A.

@MsHearthWitch @knitting I’m rubbish at figuring this stuff out too. Which pattern?

@MsHearthWitch That’s gorgeous!

Archergal,

@MsHearthWitch I'm not quite sure I understand what you're wanting to do, but like I said, I'm rubbish at figuring that stuff out. I'd probably have to graph it out too.

Fiber artists of the Fedi! I'm looking for some yarn.

Lace or fingering
White/undyed
Silk + merino/BFL (maybe another fiber, silk is a for sure tho)

NOT looking for budget options (pls no Knit Picks recs). I am looking for a lux yarn to create essentially a heirloom piece.

Something that would hold up to dyeing if I decide to go with a color in the future would be good.

I think I found one!

@MsHearthWitch There are definitely patterns by Russian designers on Rav. Many are Orenburg designs, tho, which are a little different in style and execution.
Would it be intrusive if I ask what appeals to you about the shawl in the picture? the size? the floaty-ness? The pattern? It looks like it could be a half-pi/half-circle/more-than-half circle.

I ask because I look at shawl patterns a lot (on Ravelry). Shawls are almost the only thing I knit anymore. Less lace now than I used to, tho.

Archergal,
@Archergal@wandering.shop avatar

@MsHearthWitch Agree on all points. I think the really fine mohair contributes to the floaty-ness. Probably knitted on relatively large needles.

It’s not that easy to find a decent pattern for a really big shawl. I don’t have a physical sensitivity to mohair, but knitting very fine yarn with large needles makes me twitch. And mohair is a PITA to tink. Also dries my hands, all of which is why I don’t use it.

@KarenStrickholm @MsHearthWitch A fingering weight shawl done on larger needles would give the size, but would lose a bit of the floaty-ness, because heavier. You’d have to swatch to see what would work.

Archergal,
@Archergal@wandering.shop avatar

@MsHearthWitch @KarenStrickholm I hear you! 👍

Archergal,
@Archergal@wandering.shop avatar

@MsHearthWitch @KarenStrickholm Have you looked at Wendy McDonnell’s patterns? She designs some big shawls. I haven’t made one of hers so can’t vouch for pattern-writing skills.

@MsHearthWitch @KarenStrickholm Zephyr would be a little heavier than the yarn called for in the pattern, so you could use a larger needle & make it larger (Re Stardust)

@MsHearthWitch @KarenStrickholm Olga Bochkareva

is a Russian designer with similar vibes.

I’ll stop now, information overload approaching! Good luck!

Archergal,

@MsHearthWitch It’s not you, it’s me, I think! Now I want to make ALL THE SHAWLS, even though my eyes are half-shot and my hands are getting cranky!

Archergal,
@Archergal@wandering.shop avatar

@MsHearthWitch And I don’t want to succumb to that nerd tendency to flood another person with ALL THE THINGS THAT CATCH MY EYE OMG THERE ARE SO MANY!!!!1!1!!1 😁

Archergal,

@MsHearthWitch ::Filed away for future reference::

But I seriously may have talked myself into buying one of Wendy’s patterns.

Archergal,
@Archergal@wandering.shop avatar

@MsHearthWitch I like Stardust, because it’s kinda geometric/symmetrical (very satisfying to me) and it has size options.

Archergal,

@MsHearthWitch I’ve kinda wanted to make this one for a long time:

@MsHearthWitch @gannet Hm, I don’t have experience doing that. Might be worth a try!

Finished my first pair of mittens, first colourwork project.

Very proud of how they turned out. They are a gift for someone. Cannot wait to start a pair for myself -- although a different pattern because I'm not a Harry Potter fan...

Outside of colourwork knitted mittens, showing trees and a stag and the words "expecto patronum"
