Fiber artists of the Fedi! I'm looking for some yarn.

Lace or fingering
White/undyed
Silk + merino/BFL (maybe another fiber, silk is a for sure tho)

NOT looking for budget options (pls no Knit Picks recs). I am looking for a lux yarn to create essentially a heirloom piece.

Something that would hold up to dyeing if I decide to go with a color in the future would be good.

I think I found one!

@MsHearthWitch @knitting I always liked Jaggerspun Zephyr for lace. It’s a 2 ply, 50% merino/50% tussah silk, 1120 yds/100 g. Made a lot of shawls with it, including the one I wore to my wedding. Strong, a bit shiny, but not a lot, drapes well.

Not sure if that’s the right # of yards/lb for your project tho?

ETA: prob not fine enough for a ring shawl, but too fine for a baby blanket

Archergal,
@Archergal@wandering.shop avatar

@MsHearthWitch The Zephyr is a bit finer than the yard used in the pattern, so a FO from it wd prob be a bit smaller. There’s a shop on Etsy (BrowningandWolff) that sometimes has a 55% BFL/45% silk “lace weight sock yarn” but they seem to be out right now. It’s the same 875/100g as the yarn the pattern calls for. (And for all I know, it may be the same base)

Archergal,
@Archergal@wandering.shop avatar

@MsHearthWitch Very pretty, and I’ve been pleased when I used Rome’s patterns in the past

Archergal,
@Archergal@wandering.shop avatar

@CleoQc @MsHearthWitch This yarn has a bit more wool, but the grist is closer to the one called for in the pattern.

If you can knit with an alpaca blend* Bare Shimmer Lace from KnitPicks is 880/100g, comes undyed. KnitPicks also has Bare Aristo, 70% wool, 15% cashmere, 15% mulberry silk, 984 yds/ 100 g undyed. I have no personal experience with this yarn tho.

  • Alpaca dries my hands out like crazy, making it hard FOR ME to keep good even tension. 😕

@MsHearthWitch Hm, I’ve been looking at circular/half-circular shawls on Rav a lot recently, but don’t recall seeing that one. It’s glorious❤️ Any memory of where u saw it, e.g. Pinterest?

Archergal,
@Archergal@wandering.shop avatar

@MsHearthWitch @CleoQc Gotcha. 👍

Archergal,
@Archergal@wandering.shop avatar

@MsHearthWitch Ah, I’d been wondering to myself if it was a Russian pattern. I see she’s in Latvia, so I wasn’t TOO far off. And she’s not charging enough for her work!

She mentions mohair: what about Kidsilk Haze? Mohair & silk, and you can use a fairly large needle. It would be light and floaty.

11/15:

Watched Nyad (movie) on Netflix. Always awed by marathon sports.

Changed mind AGAIN on shawl edging. Pulled some rows out, got everything back on the needles with Pacific Rim playing in the background.

Made roasted veg for supper for the first, but def not the last time! Store-bought pork roast with it.

Finished the new Murderbot book on audio!

Pretty sure I have a workable edging for shawl. May be able to finish tonight.

Got aerosol whipped cream to use on strawberries & angel food cake, and to squirt directly into dog mouths. 😁

Good book club discussion about Frankenstein. Worried that Roger (fellow member) still has bronchitis though.

I have a plan for the edge of my shawl and I've made some progress on it.

ATT repair was out to fix my landline. I got a new box!

I’ll be going back to read yesterday’s/today’s replies. I got offline early yesterday … I did something to my back, and the pain!

So I’m taking it easy.

Please don’t @ me with remedies. I’m an old hand at this, trust me.

Any good reads this weekend?

I’m still plugging along with David Copperfield( I haven’t made a lot of progress this week, but am sticking with it) & also reading Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann, this was on my summer list, but I didn’t get to it then. @bookstodon

@Likewise @bookstodon I’ve got to read Frankenstein for my book club Monday. That’s my job for today.

Archergal,
@Archergal@wandering.shop avatar

@VernAFish @Likewise @bookstodon I read it ages ago, which means it’ll be practically all new to me!

I have had a brutal go of it lately. Need a solace top up bigtime.

I am going to do a pre-planned tomorrow ( Sun Nov 5) at 11am EST for anyone who wants to join me at that time.

You can hold a space for my shit, hold a space for your own shit, hold a space for the shit of the whole world... and see if we can't let some of it go and make room for some peace and hope.

Archergal,
@Archergal@wandering.shop avatar

@vlrny I'm here today, Sunday. I've been kinda puny lately, back giving me grief, also sinuses, so feeling sorry for myself. Also missing my sister and dreading the holidays to come.

just to know others are near, metaphorically.

We had to say goodbye to our sweet Happy. She was the very best girl & we had so many adventures together. Happy hiked mountains in Colorado, camped with us in Texas, ran across California’s beaches & pranced through the Michigan snow.

She named herself Happy & loved every person she ever met. We have always felt extremely lucky to find her on Congress Ave & came to call her our Austin terrier since she was a little bit of every breed. We will miss her every day.

Hi team, anyone have suggestions for a that takes #5 nibs that has good cap seal?

I’m thinking Opus 88 Halo currently, but what I’d ideally want is a spring loaded cap like in an Esterbrook, Fine Writing, Platinum, Sailor Realo.

I have a bunch of good #5 nibs but no good comfortable pen to put them in currently.

Archergal,
@Archergal@wandering.shop avatar

@paradoxmo I think the Esterbrook JR (smaller than an Estie) takes #5 nibs. I have several Jr’s, and they’re fine. Comparable in size to a Pelican 200/205.

Archergal, (edited )
@Archergal@wandering.shop avatar

@paradoxmo Yeah, I like a girthier barrel too. Opus 88 pocket pens also use #5 nibs, I think. And maybe some others, as folks here have mentioned.

I just strongly prefer #6 nibs.

New feature at the : the check-out process ends with the computer telling me I’ve saved $15.99 this year by using the public library. That’s a bit of an underestimate. They should include the $250 of volumes they got me through Inter-Library Loan last month.

Archergal,
@Archergal@wandering.shop avatar

@Virginicus Our library does that too.

I know it's been a minute since I've had to apply for a credit card but did I fall into a coma since I did? Just got junk mail offering 31.24% APR that had a $39 ANNUAL FEE 😱 😳 ??? It also bragged that it at least doesn't have a processing fee! Since when has that been a thing???

I gotta call my credit union and apologize for getting grumpy when my card's variable jumped up to 11.5%!!

Oh just... fuck it all and everything to hell.

Despite being cautious... Teen has tested positive for covid. Which means no surgery for them on Saturday (I can't imagine the doctor would okay surgery on someone who is positive with a virus, I would absolutely say I am not okay with that).

Now the scramble begins of what is the safest course of action forward.

I just... I tried to play like I was okay with it (the trip), but I knew this was gonna happen.

@MsHearthWitch Oh man, that’s hard. Hang in there, hope things go a bit better soon! ❤️

My dad, a dr., was an award-winning photographer, but would never take money for his work. He got his photos in National Geographic calendar and other places, won contests, etc, but wouldn’t take a dime.

I’m going through his photos (he took, developed them himself, start to finish), have to get rid of a ton bc we can’t take them to Canada, 100s of mounted 11x14s. I’ll share some soon.

& if you’re very very good, I’ll also share a pic of me at 19 that he took in London. 😊 Maybe even more.

Archergal,
@Archergal@wandering.shop avatar

@GottaLaff @j5v You know, it’s such a hard thing when u realize that there are good and useful things that we or people we love that will be left behind — and that nobody else will find of any value. It’s sobering and humbling, and sad-making.
