The time has come for a de-stashing. If you are in the US/Canada, have challenges acquiring yarn, and are interested in a mystery box of yarn of varying weights, colors, and materials, please let me know. If I have multiple interested parties, I may choose 1-2 winners, or I may distribute the yarn in some way. You will receive the yarn free of charge. All I ask is that you give it a good home - either use it yourself or donate it on. @knitting

I have zero trouble getting yarn, but I do frequently make blankets out of whatever motley cookies and weights of yarn I have, so if no one else speaks up….

But I would be very very low on any priority list. (Also am allergic to actual wool.)

@phildini Nice! My attention is caught by the little snake trailing behind the boat on the Six of Swords. Wonder what he is!

Comparative

Comparing different versions of tarot cards is one of my favourite things to do. Here are a couple of versions of the Hanged Man, from the Orien’s Animal Tarot and the Modern Witch Tarot.

The bird tangled in red threads in the first card here is, strangely, distressing in a way that I don’t generally find with suspended humans. Perhaps it’s the number of threads, or the way that if the bird struggles, it will become more entangled and the thin lengths will cut into it. The potential for further damage feels very central to this version of the card - and yet, the bird is calm and immobile. Small birds rarely feel serene, and yet, this card suggests that we can find this kind of peace even if we think of ourselves as highly strung. It’s the juxtaposition between expectation and expression that holds tension in this Hanged Man.

In contrast, the Modern Witch tarot causes no such worry. This suspended person is dressed in comfy clothes and sneakers, clearly able to stay in this position for quite a while, by choice. The expression, though, feels less serene than determined, like someone who is going to meditate and be calm, darnit. There’s a sense of seeking here, of using discomfort and discombobulation to find wisdom.

The two versions together bring a reminder that the insight of the Hanged Man isn’t easily achieved. That it can take working against instinct or embracing discomfort to let the unexpected through. It requires patience and trust that being out of step with the world will bring gifts even as it may ache.

What version of the Hanged Man is your favourite? How does it compare?

A tarot card showing a small yellow bird hangs upside down, suspended from red threads.

@mishellbaker I live in a city that will be in 99.6% of totality, so we’re heading out now to go to the nearby small town that will be in the full path. I’ll try to update later!

@mishellbaker There’s a very small bite out of the sun where I am now. It doesn’t feel quite real. Even though I knew what was going to happen, there’s a part of my mind that rejects it.

Athenalindia,
@Athenalindia@pagan.plus avatar

@mishellbaker It just really hit me that I am not just looking at the sun. I am watching something as huge as the moon move in front of the sun.

We’re around the halfway mark. It feels cooler and the quality of the light has changed. The sharpness of the colours is different.

Athenalindia,
@Athenalindia@pagan.plus avatar

@mishellbaker It’s starting to feel like twilight, but the shadows are in the wrong place. It’s very eerie.

The only words are the ones that feel trite. I don’t know any other ones than eerie, uncanny, even holy. But they mean something different than I would use them generally. Usually I think of sounds, now it’s the light and how it hits and the lack of sunset colours as the sun disappears.

Athenalindia,
@Athenalindia@pagan.plus avatar

@mishellbaker I am going to have to sit with this for a while. It was so slow and so fast and awe-inspiring on a molecular level. Everything went dark, but the shadows didn’t lengthen. Everything felt incongruous in a way that unsettles reality.

Athenalindia,
@Athenalindia@pagan.plus avatar

@mishellbaker And when the moon has entirely covered the sun, not only can you see stars, but when you look at where the sun shins be, it’s like there’s a hole in the sky. Not an object in front of an object, but an absence.

Comparative

Contrasting different versions of the same card can yield interesting insight. Here are a couple of versions of the Two of Cups.

The Tarot of the Abyss strips the card down to the two figures and their connections. Nothing else distracts from their connection and the moment. It is a moment of anticipation rather than one of consummation. They gaze into each others’ eyes, holding each other tenderly. They are connected by touch and by sight, seeing something in each other’s eyes that holds them together and sustains their connection. They each hold a cup, but it feels almost superfluous. What I find most interesting about this card is the way it takes the traditional caduceus and makes visual reference to it - but in this case, the symbol of communication that is two snakes twined around a pole is formed from their bodies themselves. They are physically entwined, but it also references the depth of the communication that got them to the point where each could share themselves so entirely.

The Trick or Tarot, on the other hand, seems less about communication and more about connection and romance in the middle of a very real world. It also brings a sense of playfulness to this romance. The woman kisses a bear, or rather, a person in an obvious bear costume. It’s hard to say if the pumpkin baskets at their feet have an opinion on their relationship, but the costume draws attention to personas, how we fall in love with a persona, and if we’re lucky, the person underneath as well. This relationship might be early enough that she doesn’t know the real bear yet, or perhaps the relationship is not ready to be revealed to the world. The cat/bat cherub looking over this scene instead of the traditional lion looks a little amused about the scene below. And of course, as this deck is all to do with Hallowe’en, a day of topsy-turvydom, perhaps this isn’t a romantic relationship for all time, but taking advantage of a brief moment to have some fun.

These two give us slightly different glimpses of romantic love - one deep and all-consuming, the other more playful and perhaps less serious. They could be different moments of the same relationship, or a recognition that not every connection is meant to be lifelong.

If you want to play along, post a picture of a Two of Cups from your deck. What viewpoint does your card take on romance and connection? What symbols does it use to convey those concepts?

A woman in a blue robe and a person in a bear costume kiss. Two jack-o-lantern baskets are on the ground near their feet. A blue and black catbat flies above their heads, looking slightly bemused
