I think it’s hilarious that you promote nerd bashing on a platform where the majority is working with IT, just look how often posts from Programmer Humor trend.
Sounds very theoretical, my experience working on some 40 year old software full of business logic, where customer A got some feature but customer B needs it to work slightly different. Aka something approaching spaghetti.
Regarding old comments I have several times used ~15 year old comments by the original author, close to the actual code to piece together the use of that code, and if I can add my fix there.
In this setting You write comments for yourself, when you in two years need to fix a bug in the new code caused by your old code. And for the next developer that will look at your code decades after you left the company.
Sometimes you, against good practice, comment out a section, with a note why, because you know this will have to be re-enabled in a few months.
Yes Python is definitely a programming language, I write in C/C++/C#/Python/Bash each language has its areas where they are best.
I prefer Python for DevOps related code and writing smaller programs/tools. You just get so much handed to you with Python’s toolbox, it just makes things easier, you can use it as a scripting language or write a modular object oriented program.
I use C/C++ when performance matters and I want things to be Done right TM, and make sure to use all the help the compilers and static code checkers can give.
In general the users should not worry about kernel vulnerabilites because of the built in security in Linux and because the desktop is a much smaller target.
As other people write: Keep to trusted sources (like your distributions own repo) and you should be all right.
It’s the Linux servers that should take note and apply patches.
Ages ago downloaded some code for handling volume control for me to extend, it was a VB developer using c and they did the same, I just closed it and found some other code to use. 🙄
