Bobbins

@Bobbins@bobbinsrobots.com

I have 13 progressively harder levels. Try me if you dare.

Rob. The real Peter Molyneux 2017/2018. Writes and writes about video games. Watches tat films. Touched a computer once, sorry.

If you’ve got a blacklist, I want to be on it. Disabled and tired.

Thinking about subscribing to Edge again. I did for years and years, then I switched to an iPad sub for a while which was kind of cool but I let it lapse a while back. I’d probably go physical again despite the clutter, my iPad is an ancient potato now and I don’t feel like buying another

Is Edge still good? I’m getting old-man nostalgia about when games writing was good and people got paid properly and didn’t have to do weird Internet shite to live and then get laid off by IGN

@ALWyvern @sinbad Best it’s ever been, imo.

@ALWyvern @sinbad If you don’t mind digital, libraries often have a Press Reader login for customers and that has Edge each month effectively for nowt. I use a Readly sub for mine so I can huff everything (except the ones I won’t read on principal, also pictured ahem), if you’re not arsed about owning things, obv.

On IGN acquiring RPS, Eurogamer, etc…

Grim news. I’ve taken this extremely personally because RPS and Eurogamer basically ensured I didn’t just write a game and get lost in the milieu over and over again. Whether that’s writing about my stuff, writing for them, sitting on panels or having my work on show, they’ve been a consistent force for good. I’m proud to have bylines on Gamer Network.

The staff over at GI dot biz have bust a gut over the years to turn the place around from a complete shitshow to the best in class, doing the work of business posting for other businesses whilst keeping a beady eye on the human costs that come with people existing in videogames and holding games companies to account with their own words and actions.

This shit shouldn’t be as rare as it is but it is and the work folks have put in, year in, year out is a testament to them.

Brilliant people who deserve better than this.

Everyone in videogames is worse off for this. Every good person we lose has been a champion for someone else. They’ve brought eyeballs to games and situations that would struggle to find any. Games is a lesser place with every callous sacking and a little bit of hope and magic disappears alongside.

My brain absolutely hates that thing game news sites are doing where they embed random videos of a completely different game midway through the article. It throws me for a loop every single time.

If you finish up before you get to The Devil You Know, Humble’s BPRD bundle is an incredible amount of very good comics for about twenty quid.

Mind, I need to stop wondering once a year whether Devil You Know is as bad as I remember it because it always is.

I think Jon Blow complaining about not being able to find Braid on PSN without scrolling to the bottom of the list of new releases and having to be told to stop sorting by best selling and it goes to the top will give me strength for years to come.

Super Destronaut: Landed X Loaded

It’s always a treat to get a new Super Destronaut game to play around with, they’re some of my fave new arcade games. They’re rarely difficult or especially punishing, preferring instead to focus on the simple pleasures of shooting chunky pixel enemies and watching them explode in a violent sea of colour. In other words, absolutely perfect for me, the person who likes nothing more than shooting chunky pixel enemies and watching them…

I don’t think I should have huffed both Who eps in one as soon as they dropped because that’s left me all too excited for this time of the morning.

Criminy.

Really enjoyed Rend & Tear With Tooth & Claw in the recent 2000ad issues. Dredd vs massive bear? Oh yes. Go on then.

Bobbins,
@Bobbins@bobbinsrobots.com avatar

@craiggrannell I didn’t mind it too much, felt like it was missing a page to me though.

Bobbins,
@Bobbins@bobbinsrobots.com avatar

@craiggrannell Yeah, I can appreciate that. I think I’ve huffed enough survivor films in recent months that the despondent ending was something I was expecting from the moment they drew attention to the cadet.

For me, with only half a page given over to Dredd wandering off, I don’t think it quite had the space to pull off the sort of widescreen despair to really make the sacrifice work. Cramming so much onto that one page left no room to take it in and breathe.

    @psychicparrot42 Much excitement in Chez Bob too. Think the eldest might pop if it's on iPlayer late and they have to wait a bit longer.

    Sorry. I have no context for the quote but in this month's Edge there's a quote from a videogame dude saying they hate achievements and what they've done to games and I don't think I've paid even the vaguest attention to them in years.

    Quite enjoyed the novelty when they were invariably challenging the player to try playing in an unusual way but they don't impact the way I play a game even slightly anymore. I don't know how normal this is but I'd guess at "very"

    Bobbins,
    @Bobbins@bobbinsrobots.com avatar

    Then again, I'm wondering how much of me finding achievements popping to a shrug comes from how much nastier "shopping lists for engagement" stuff is just some folks idea of good game design.

    Achievements seem kinda quaint in comparison to what's in your average three cards and an eternity of upgrades game.

    Bobbins,
    @Bobbins@bobbinsrobots.com avatar

    Looking back at this thought, definitely a case of me not really being on the ball.

    As pointed out to me - even in their more innocuous [relative] early state, people would still get super obsessive over achievements. Just because I've largely been fortunate enough to have a brain that switches quickly to "screw this nonsense" and can ignore them easily-ish, doesn't mean everyone else can. The kind of thought I really should default to by now!

    So yes, there's that.

    Idea: Super Smash Bros but with old videogame characters who retain all the quirks from their original games.

    Choose your fighter: the one with the collision box 3 times the size of the sprite, the one who dies if they fall more than their own height, the one with the fixed arc jump, the one that can't do diagonals, the one that rarely responds, the one with two frames of animation, the one with the colour clash, the one that's precisely the size of one UDG, the egg you just kick shit out of...
