One thing we underestimate is the religion of techbros. They don't even realize they're religious.

But a lot of people grew up eating stories about "general" AI and space colonies and these science fiction tropes became ingrained pretty deeply into their psyche.

They simply think this stuff is foretold. They believe in it with a religious fervor.

If you're stumped as to why AI is being adopted rapidly at all levels despite being nonsense, it's because they're zealots.

My mind sometimes wanders over to Scooby-Doo remakes. There was a pretty terrible one recently, as you might remember.

But one thing I think people forget about the original Scooby-Doo is that all the characters were counterculture. Hippies, draft-dodgers, pot-heads, nerds-

Nowadays culture has drifted and they're not nearly as obviously counterculture.

It'd be fun to create an adaptation which brings back that feel, that kind of "the adults are fuckin' stupid, let's solve crimes" feel.

Whenever I see a game where a character is jammed airtightly into a specific audience range, I can't help but imagine them in other stories, at other times in their life.

Like imagine an adventure game featuring a tween Putt Putt that's obsessed with Hot Topic and trying to start a YouTube channel.

Or you can go the other way. Imagine Kratos Teaches Typing.

It really is amazing just how hard and fast internet giants dove for "let's replace our content with literal nonsense because it's cheaper".

Oh, this newbie programmer YouTuber learning Godot is very charming. He's doing very well.

Video: "So when I asked ChatGPT for the code-"

What? What are you-

Video: "And this is wrong, this function doesn't exist. ChatGPT, this is your job, you're supposed to know-"

Are you... joking?

Holy shit, we're in the middle of losing a whole generation of new programmers.

Grrr. The "standard" web interface for Mastodon - the one you get when you browse to, say, Mastodon.social - is getting slightly more annoying with every update. They keep adding misfeatures, and I don't know where they get their ideas.

"Let's put opaque boxes on top of images. You know, right on top of where text often goes in images."

"Let's make the subtab highlight look exactly like the 'more content above' highlight, so it looks like you ALWAYS have mentions waiting for you - but psyche!"

Ah, indie VNs. Either nobody acts like a human or every second of their mundane lives is covered in agonizing detail... and THEN they don't act like a human.

Just as a reminder, if you follow an art account and you want to actually see their art, there's a bell icon next to the follow button that will put their posts in your notifications.

The bell icon only appears when you follow them, and YouTube has trained us to ignore bell icons, so it's easy to overlook.

Mhhmmmm... If you are, say, creating a list of the best videos you can find, that's fine.

If you don't include conspiracy theorists and bigots, that's fine.

But terms like "NSFW" and "extremists" are... extreeeeemely loaded.

You would perhaps prefer to say "suitable for teenagers", or something else that designates a demographic, instead of terms that explicitly allow our corporate media landscape to define your limits for you?

Sometimes an indie/midbudget sequel just... vanishes. And you're like "huh."

And you go and look it up and find out they did absolutely bonkers out-of-scope stuff to try and make their sequel fresh and new and hung themselves on their own shoelaces.

... Listen. Innovation is for the first title in a series.

Sequels are for polishing what you already succeeded with.

You had a sure bet! Just do the same, but better!

Gonna make a movie about vikings where they farm goats and argue about which parts of the forest to cut down for firewood. Buncha dudes sitting around in the background while some beefy lady churns butter and talks about whether her nieces will recover from chicken pox.

Ahhh, watching a really good video and then looking at the channel and it's... their only video.

You're like... this is clearly your one-off artsy fartsy channel, where's the rest? SHOW ME THE VIDEOS~

Mom text: "I've got Al looking into it, although it's confusing-"

Me: "AI? You're using AI?"

Mom: "Al Hertzenfeffer, you met him once fifteen years ago, remember?"

Oh. AL. With an el.

Instead, let's talk about exploration game design some more!

Another one of those threads. Mute me for an hour if you don't care.

I personally think exploration games are in a bad place right now, and that comes down to the "plot".

Most exploration games try to tie their exploration together by having a plot or a progression which drives you through the universe.

"You need to find BLUE GEMS and that means GOING TO THE NORTH next. BOB, the KING OF THE ELVES, has taken the DRAGON THRONE-"

Watching on FreeTube has really led me into some new faces I've never seen before. They're not quite as good as my painstaking first picks, but they're watchable.

Let's see if you can identify who I'm watching now:

"Unlike a normal OOOARRRRRR-P-G, this OOOARRRRR-P-G is a tactical one-"

I think the thing that disappoints me most about space games about war is just how incredibly boring the framing is.

There is no such thing as an symmetrical war, especially if it's between completely separate peoples at great range. The perfectly balanced fights we always get in space battlers are just... pathetic.

If you want to do a space war game, it can be a powerful way to explore asymmetric wars. Why they happen, how they're fought, what they mean-

But nope. Ya gotta be able to WIN.

People censoring words in their YouTube videos has gotten hilariously out of hand.

People will censor the world "underwear".

I know they're desperate to appease the YouTube gods, but if you can't even describe the thing you're talking about, maybe you shouldn't be using the platform.

One unexpected advantage of the new separated bike lanes Somerville's put in is that they get plowed.

Like most US cities, shoveling the sidewalk is left to each homeowner, even though they have no stake in it and aren't responsible for any other element of sidewalk maintenance.

So the result is that sidewalks alternate between 20 feet of absolutely clear salted walkway and 20 feet of death ice.

Integrated bike lanes get ignored and left unplowed.

Separated bike lanes? Perfectly walkable.

Craigp,
@Craigp@mastodon.social avatar

Obviously "walk in the bike lanes" is suboptimal, but the alternative is either "walk down the middle of the car road" or "bring skis".

It's fun when someone is good enough at animation that you know a character's awkwardness is a characteristic instead of artistic limitation.

Hey Fediverse today is my birthday

If you would like to do something for me for my birthday, will you please send me a picture (or recording) of something broken (or not working correctly)?

You can reply, or post it with and I will see it.

Thank you <3

I'm really not a fan of how you search for a very specific string of nonsense and instead of returning hits for it, it returns hits for vaguely similar and much more common strings.

This is an AI-driven thing that is just the dumbest shit.

"Clearly they meant to search for this more common thing, and there will be no option to find what they are looking for. In fact, we won't even bring up that we're returning the wrong thing."
