Aww, I've been really looking forward to using the Switch while on the stationary bike, but it seems like everything I try to play is trashed by mobile game tactics.

I paid full price for these games, and yet they still serve ads and demand in-game purchases.

I was looking forward to Powerwash Simulator, which I bought on both PC and Switch at full price... and Switch serves up a FULL SCREEN AD for fucking grimdark wargames of grimdark that can only be closed by sloooowwwwly moving a cursor to a four pixel wide "x".

A) Who the fuck plays both Powerwash Simulator and killmonger war deathgame doomdeath 9000?

B) I FUCKING BOUGHT IT AT FULL PRICE. What a fucking sucker.

So I find the new Endless Ocean game. That sounds great!

It's a bit pricey at $50, but at least I-

OH WAIT. It says there's in-app purchases "available". So what, I blow $50 and what do I actually get? How often will it be interrupted by ads?

Once broken, trust is hard to repair. Everything on the Switch is suspect, the whole platform feels trashy now.

Anyone have any recommendations for things I can play for 15-30 minute bursts on the Switch while cycling?

Requirements:

A game. JUST a game.

A game that can be played without ever being interrupted by ads or upsells.

That Endless Ocean game would be perfect if it were even vaguely trustworthy.

@Craigp

I got Endless Ocean for my partner and she seems to be enjoying it. No ads or upsells as far as I'm aware (the upsells might be for Nintendo Online to use the multiplayer functionality?)

@adaliabooks If that's the case, I'm happy to never see them.

I suspected it, given that some of the shots were clearly multiplayer... but you know how games that pivot to multiplayer usually destroy their singleplayer entirely.

Good to hear they haven't decayed that far yet.

@Craigp

The single player seems to mostly be swimming about scanning fish and learning about them, with the occasional bit of treasure to collect as well.
There are two modes, a proc gen solo dive mode where you just swim around a random area and a story which sets you some quests and stuff (I haven't really watched her playing much so I'm not sure what they're like)

Multiplayer is an entirely separate option.

@adaliabooks

Sounds good, I'm downloading it now.

The only way to know if a game is even playable is apparently to find someone who's already played it and isn't trying to write a review for adrev. Sigh...

adaliabooks,
@adaliabooks@ohai.social avatar

@Craigp

Yeah, it sucks... I don't bother with reviews much at all. I'll take a glance at Steam or GOG reviews for a game and try and get a balanced view of whether I might like it, but so many reviews are nothing to do with the game itself these days it's hard to get a feel for a game from them.

I miss my old Nintendo Gamer magazines, I could always rely on them to tell me if games were worth it or not.

Hope you enjoy it!

@adaliabooks Even if I hate it, that's fine as long as I enjoy hating it.

But I can't enjoy a game that stops being a game in order to shovel ads and upsells at me. That's just being hammered by ads, not a game.
