Somebody ran into my bike in the parkade. She said, "I didn't know I hit anything" as she drove through the clearly painted no-driving zone. -_-

How bad was the damage?

Latest active path snow clearing priority map for an important area near me. Blue is 1-day service level, green is 3.

Once again, I question whether anyone who drew up these maps even uses active transportation, ever.

In particular, what is even the point of making Connors 1-day when it's not connected to other 1-day routes?

(I'll forgive the lack of lines on some of the overpasses because I think those are handled differently.)

Daveography,

I wrote to my councillor suggesting one of the two following upgrades (red and orange lines in the first image) to 1-day service to make this at least somewhat useful.

Even this third suggestion (second image) would at least make some semblance of sense and connectivity, even if a bit less convenient.

If neither of these can be done, at least set our expectations consistently and save resources by downgrading Connors to match the rest of the area.

Another map of snow clearing priority in the Cloverdale neighbourhood, with some of the gaps filled with lines for suggested service level upgrades.

Daveography,

Even regardless of these levels, I'm planning to keep 311ing impassable paths all winter, and suggest other and folks do the same.

At least then they will have data about where the squeakiest wheels travel and most frequently encounter barriers to their mobility, and can take that into consideration when they next review these plans.

As someone else (sorry, forgot who) pointed out, this is a great way to get people to ignore emergency alerts.

Daveography,

@robyn

No, I didn't get it at all, but weather alerts should not be trivialized any more than any other kind of emergency alert.

I am quite impressed with this fridge costume in

If you need me, I’ll be "CHILLING" in my costume!'

So great. I've long said Lauren is a municipal treasure. Her Halloween costumes are epic.

Daveography,

@likelyjanlukas @ned

I guess in that sense it works as a scary costume too?

Randomly makes me wonder if anyone has ever done a Halloween costume of the McCallister family home's furnace from Home Alone.

Anybody else having issues uploading images? In particular on yeg.bike? I've been trying on Tusky and web on desktop all morning - web gives me a 500 error, and Tusky says "the upload failed"

Just me or...?

Daveography,

@Kellyshenanigans @robyn

Dang, yeah, seems too be an issue with the yeg.bike server. Will take a look as soon as I can, thanks for letting me know.

Daveography,

@Kellyshenanigans @robyn

Found and repaired a corrupted database index; uploads seem to be working now (as is pulling external posts with media), but the server has a pretty large backlog of posts to process so there may be some delays for the next little while still.

Sorry about that, need to start keeping a closer eye on the server for issues like that since it doesn't really notify me of issues.

Like me, perhaps you suffer from Sleep Debt.

I'm setting up a global marketplace to trade SLEEP OFFSET CREDITS. While you'll just be as tired as you were before, you'll sleep better* knowing that globally we're moving in the right direction.

@Daveography has a question that's kind of related to reliability and/or frequent use.

Q3. What's one piece of bike gear or clothing that you can't seem to avoid wrecking or breaking more often than should be possible?

Daveography,

@edd @ascentale

I hear so many horror stories about bent and broken hangers, but that's one thing I've never had any issues with myself.

"Halloween is in fact the time when Satan impregnates his bride."

This is in fact a fact regarding the fact stated.

"No longer responding to messages that say nothing but 'heeeeey' or 'hi' - say what you need to say" Challenge

Daveography,

@robyn

God I've struggled with this most of my career. I intentionally don't respond right away to people who do this.

Even worse is I've worked with people like this:

[4:25pm] Bob: hi
[4:45pm] Me: Hi.
[4:58pm] Bob: how are you?
[5:00pm] Me: goes home

Pretty morning.

Unfortunately the way weather patterns work around here, a beautiful sunrise usually means cloudy/rainy weather incoming, but at least we had this moment.

Daveography,

This one caught the last bit of light before the clouds took over.

Daveography, to gardening

Who has two brown thumbs and totally missed the frost warning last night?

👍 this guy right here 👍

I wasn't planning on making tomato paste and salsa verde today, but at least it's a way to salvage the tomatoes that froze on the vine last night.

(I don't actually think I have a brown thumb, gardening and taking care of plants is something I'm proudly relatively good at, missed weather warnings notwithstanding)

Daveography,

I'm also not at all unhappy with the amount of tomatoes we already harvested this year, including probably hundreds of grape and cherry tomatoes that we're still snacking on.

Daveography, to edmonton

With the #yegWX frost warning, we decided we should just harvest our squash rather than try to cover them (the plants had spread over nearly half the garden).

Tempting as it was to try to let them grow a bit longer, I'd say these pumpkins are big enough.

They are an heirloom variety from Australia that are actually a really neat shade of blue that I wish came across better in the photo.

#yeg #gardening #pumpkins #squash

Daveography,

@schizanon

Not hard at all, no. They practically took over the garden, we had to trim them back a few times.

We also got four nice acorn squash, which you can also see in that photo.

Sadly we can't seem to get any mature butternut squash for some reason, though, in two years of trying.
