Here is the thing, it doesn’t even have to benefit anything or anyone except you to be worth it, your happiness should matter to us all… sadly it does and quite a worrying amount of people seem to think you aren’t entitled to even that basic bit of humanity.

It is absolutely the point, it always has been, cleansing society, which is disgusting.

It is the cheapest, safest energy source available to us and a design like ThorCon could have 20 500MWH power plants with desalination plants built in, rolling out of any midsized shipyard. Entirely passively safe, proliferation proof and the waste is contained in a salt form, already in a well designed container. Each plant is costed at $2 billion, bringing consumer costs below 5 cent per kWh

@doctormo @Heleenschrijft @johnzajac @donmelton https://thorconpower.com/ has a lot of data on the design and cost. It is a straight forward design, dead simple, proven technology we have been able to do since the 60s.

The lead designer Robert Hargraves wrote a lovely book called Cheaper than Coal, which is the aim of the design, delivering energy at a price that can compete with the only other option energy poor nations have a available to them, in a way that can be mass produced.

@doctormo @Heleenschrijft @johnzajac @donmelton It hits on a number of factors I think we will benefit from considering, such as rapid deployment using existing production capacity, focusing on known technology with great passive safety, operator simplicity and creating a production pipeline using known, identical components. Which makes power plants easy to test and run with great trust in the safety.

We could roll out hundreds of these every year, at a known cost, on schedule.

@doctormo @Heleenschrijft @johnzajac @donmelton again, we have known how to build this since the 60s, it is proven technology and in terms of an investment we are talking about a billion dollars to do a test platform and 4 years of mandatory safety tests. It is petty cash in terms of energy investments.

What is holding this up is regulatory requirements and anti-nuclear sentiment, they are simply not given a chance to prove themselves.

They also aren’t islands, that is just for delivery.

@doctormo @Heleenschrijft @johnzajac @donmelton It is far from being Hyperloop as well, we have an actual running reactor, using that very design, all we are talking about is material tests.

As for the production line, Copenhagen Atomics is quite far along on making that, they are already offering pretty much every part of that to businesses. Scaling up is something we know how to do, it is mechanically simple, well suited for existing production knowledge, precisely to leverage it.

@doctormo storage, base load and transmission are the eternal questions for wind, as is the impact of actually making the wind turbines and how long they last.

Don’t get me wrong, I like wind power, I am Danish, we have a lot of it and we are likely the best in the world at making wind turbines at this point. Unlike a lot of people, I even find them beautiful to look at, but they cannot compete on energy price with nuclear nor with being always on.

Apple is pre-announcing some Accessibility features likely coming to iOS 17 later this year, and we have the details on @macstories.

Two features are especially a big deal:

  • Personal Voice will let users who are at risk of losing their voice create a synthetic version of it. All done with Neural Engine on-device.

  • Assistive Access is a brand new, simplified UI mode for iPhone and iPad that streamlines the entire UI.

@viticci @macstories @imyke personal voice is going to be so meaningful. I lost my aunt to ALS and when she lost her ability to speak, she never used the text to speech machine they gave her, it was simply too cumbersome. Having it with her, able to help complete sentences, filling in gaps, easing the transition would have helped give her a voice for much longer.

You only work on Y, you never listen to your users”. So you focus on X and you work really hard and you make meaningful progress on making X better and you release it and a bunch of people go “Z is the most important thing to work on. You only ever do X. You never listen to your users”. And you do this forever

@danirabbit I will readily admit that my Golden craves attention like it was crack and she will eagerly try to get people to say hi, but I do try to keep her from assaulting people in her joy, that’s just being a decent owner.

@simonbs that is fun, if you want to keep it, then perhaps view it as an accessibility thing, highlighting the exact letter you are over. I could see that being useful in certain scenarios.

That said, to me, that is too busy and it adds motion which my eye would be drawn to, rather than the surrounding text, where I would most likely expect it to be.

Since starting transition I’ve been way more dedicated to building a body that I am proud of and I’m super excited that as of today I beat my longest move ring streak ever with 61 days of continuous exercise. This morning I weighed in at 182lbs, which is 27lbs down from my all time high in May of 2021. I have my dysphoria days but goddammit I am proud of how I look now 💪
