Note to self: do not light up a smoke when you have a leaky propane tank in your car. 😬 https://www.cbsnews.com/losangeles/news/car-explodes-in-van-nuys-parking-lot/

in rural areas are folding, leaving vast deserts. But there are bright spots

"The U.S. has lost more than 2,800 newspapers since 2005, many of them in rural areas. Now some journalists are redoubling their efforts to provide local news and trying new models in a difficult industry."

The mortality rate is higher among #rural adults — and the gap with urban areas is growing

Rural adults from ages 25-54 died of natural causes at a 6% higher rate than urban residents in 1999. Twenty years later, that number grew to 43%, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

"Indigenous men and women experienced the largest rate increase, with Indigenous women seeing the largest rate spike over the 20-year period..."

sirens sounding again.

And the sirens stopped again. The storms are on the west side of Lincoln, moving northward.
I’m on the east side of Lincoln and not in any danger.

The sky to the west. Might be rotation.

The sky is gray in the west, but there could be rotation.

Evening turned to dusk on a warm April evening. The 12P/Pons-Brooks was in the western sky, but I couldn’t see it.

Trees were silhouetted against the darkening evening sky. Some orange light was still on the horizon with the moon in the sky overhead.

Has anyone else seen the 12P/Pons-Brooks ? I’ll be busy today at sunset, but maybe if it’s clear Sunday evening I can catch it. ☄️

The #shadows were strangely shaped when the #eclipse was at its peak of 80% coverage. This is a picture of the shadows from the arbor over my patio that was covered with leafless vines.

At mid-eclipse tomorrow, when the daylight sky turns dark, look for planets near the sun. Venus will be the brightest one. Jupiter will be 2nd-brightest. You might even see Mercury, Saturn and Mars.

The wild, windy weather has brought down a huge branch from an old ash tree and has caused some people in Lincoln to lose power.
