Figured I'd post a quick (re)introduction!

My name's Kody Boye. I'm a young adult horror, fantasy, and sci-fi writer who writes about young people changing their worlds.

When I'm not writing my fiction, I'm working as a content writer, playing video games, pestering my cats, or (attempting to manage my time at) reading.

Let me know if you see this, and say hello if you can! :) I'd love to start using this platform again.

Hi Kody,

welcome back!

Yes, interaction is key here... I invite you to follow the hashtag and join the writer games that we play - with questions about your books, stories and characters.

Working to get back into a regular writing habit. Mourning bad sales.

In other words, the usual. 😂

Gute Nacht, Freunde.

300 words for Sun in the morning. That feels so good, even if it's slow progress. But habit first, more writing later.

Played Valheim, and whatever happened, we no longer get those constant Events. It's a relief. Had another adventure with my friend - mined stuff from Leviathans. Sea Serpents, beware!

Had a lovely nap (necessary, bad night because of a loud party), had yummy food and really enjoyed this Sunday.

326 — Do any of your characters have a favorite place that they've ever visited?

Since I shared the cover of Connor's story yesterday, I'll pivot to him. (I'm sure you're all tired of Sun, anyway.)

Yes, Connor loves the area around Wilmington, NC, where he grew up. The bayous and swamps, the rivers and forests, they are what he considers home. And he loves returning to them.

His pack even has a house in town.

5/26: Would you consider writing a guide to your work, e.g. for aspiring writers?

I'm not a fan of guides unless they are for technical processes.

And while I'm quite willing to talk about my writing process, I am convinced that every writer needs to figure out what works for them. My way is only one of an infinite number of ways that exist.

I might set up a guide for readers on my website. But even then, they need to follow their preferences.

Gute Nacht, Freunde.

A good day! I wrote first thing in the morning - want to re-create this habit. 300 words for Sun.

Ran my Mastermind a day late.

Played Valheim - even with my friend tonight! - we had quite an adventure with a nasty Sea Serpent. But in the end, we won!

I took care of errands, cooked a meal (with room for improvement, but that's okay), and read a comfort book.

I'm very happy and feel restored.

5/25. Do you use a cover artist or design your own covers? Share your cover art.

I tried making my own covers. Didn't work out very well, but cover designers are expensive. They should be, it's value they create, but when my books don't earn much... it creates a rock and a hard place.

Anyway, I use cover designers now, and I'll share one that I love very much (partially because I love the characters so much and the designer totally got them).

Firlefanz,
@Firlefanz@writing.exchange avatar

You know, posting that cover reminded me of how much I love Connor and Ashley's story.

How two of the Wolf books (#3 and #4) are actually comfort books for me. As strange as that sounds.

And West Flows is another one of my own books that I actually re-read once in a while, simply because I love West so much.

Is that weird? (It could be, I'm Autistic, after all.)

Or is that a sign that I write what I love?

Hmmmm.

Dear ,

please welcome my friend @AJ_Ponder to Mastodon. They are a great writer and author, and I'm so glad they followed my invitation here.

Let's show them how great our community here is, how much fun we have, and how a social medium without algorithms and the need to make money for shareholders actually works.

So glad you're here, AJ!

Gute Nacht, Freunde.

No writing.

I'm seriously upset about the level of arrogance the big tech companies are displaying. Do they think we are complete fools?

So glad I'm on Mastodon.

And I hope that while things probably have to get even worse before the tech comps collapse and things can get better, we'll reach the end of "worse" really soon.

Add in the level of climate catastrophe deniers and the state of the world, and I am not doing well.

May 24: While drafting, do you avoid or binge watch similar material?

Avoid.

I don't want ideas to slip into my writing that are clearly from another book.

I still read, just not in that direct genre.

Gute Nacht, Freunde.

Survived the office day. Came home after getting groceries - and crashed. Again. A nap did help.

I really wonder why I crash so hard after half a day away from my home. I'm leaning towards blaming overwhelm, but why?

Played Valheim. Twink now feels fairly comfortable in the Swamp. I suppose that means I'm up to fighting Bonemass soon.

No writing, but just now I joined a BookFunnel for June promo with Zell - that's a new one. Wish me luck.

5/23: Are your MCs picky about where they sleep?

Sun is not, not really. The location or circumstances don't matter at all.

But he has trouble sleeping alone. All his life, he slept basically in a pile with all of his other House members.

After his escape, there is nobody he trusts to be close to. So he sleeps alone and hates it.

(This will eventually change again. 🙂 )

23.5.:

323 — What's a piece of advice for writers that you listened to and are glad for?

Write what you enjoy.

I've followed that for all my writing life. The few times I tried to write for the market, it didn't work - I either didn't finish the book or it twisted away from the idea.

I do try to hit both - and the (relative) success of my Wolf Shifter series shows that I can make it happen, to a degree. (My Shifters are not spicy and don't have Alphas...)

Gute Nacht, Freunde.

Survived the office day. Survived the doc appointment (new doc, difficult change, she is nice, but I definitely miss the old one).

Got home fine, crashed hard, took a nap and then played Valheim.

Wrote a bit for Sun this morning, now I need to visualize the fight he finds himself in.

One more office day, then I can stay home again.

About a month ago I kind of disappeared from this place. Some personal and family problems threw me out of the writing headspace and keep me busy. Patience is required of which I don't have much. Nothing dangerous though, don't worry. I'm slowly getting back into the writing, at least with microfic.
I think I'll be back in June with a different story, more gritty, fitting my mood. 😉
Eventually I'll find the energy to interact here again.

322 — What piece of advice, as an author, did you once receive but hadn’t followed? Looking back on it now, you might wish that you had.

I probably should have learned about writing blurbs a lot earlier. Also should have started building a good newsletter list years ago...

But I cannot change the past.

I can only change what I do now, and I'm working to make those parts of my author business better.

Gute Nacht, Freunde.

Didn't even try to write - yes, I opened the file, changed a few words... fizzled out. sigh

Proofread 15 pages.

Played some Valheim. Scared by troll events (they killed our pigs!). Twink peeked at the Mountain, hoping to find obsidian (no luck), killed two wolves. Still has to fight Bonemass.

Feeling quite fragile emotionally. The world has become so unsafe lately, at least that's what it feels like.

Feeling a bit fragile today.

Trying to keep it together in order to get through the work day, but there is much stuff I just can't manage at the moment. Like, my flat is a complete mess, and I hate it, but I just don't have enough energy left.

Also, this year I'll likely miss the rhodendron blooming at the camping site.

5/21. Do you consider how your MC’s appearance may contribute to stereotypes?

I worry about that, yes.

However, I believe it cannot be helped, really. People will have their impressions and will stereotype. Still, I try to stay away from them.

For example, Sun won't have red hair, even though he is a fire mage. In fact, I'm not even sure what Laisal looks like, to be honest. I'm bad at imagining faces.

@SJHoodlet

Yeah, "Firestarter" probably spoiled that one for all of us. Heh.

I actually love true redheads, it's such an awesome color. Which is why I made Zell one. (He's the hero of my SF series.) He has no magical power, just the power of persuasion and friendship.
