My first Mac - in 1984 I was a junior in high school. My dad was a professor of Botany at University of Texas. Apple had amazing student/faculty discounts for colleges back then, so when the first Mac’s went on sale, we lined up at the UT Campus Computer Store to buy my first Mac (using dads discount, and I’m sure a pretty decent amount of the cost he helped with too). OG 128k model. 1/2

Fast forward to early 1989, when I graduated from UT with a CS degree, and found my first job at Impressions Software, writing the Mac version of the Origin Systems game Space Rogue. That little Mac (and the Apple ][+ I had before it) instilled my love of programming and games. I made Mac games for the next 20 years.

@vga256 yep! And the Mac version was by far the best, in my opinion! I ended up writing the IBM PC, Mac and Amiga versions. There was an Atari ST port that thankfully I handed off to another programmer . I was a little burned out on the code base by then. 😂

To celebrate the Mac’s 40th anniversary, some of my old school Macintosh cross stitch projects. First up, the happy Mac startup icon on a classic checkerboard gray background. 1/10

Another classic Mac - oh those original bitmap fonts. I decided to update the classic “cross-stitch sampler” motif with the fonts as inspiration. 2/10

One more tonight- a coaster with the ResEdit icon! I did a few old Mac icon coasters, this was the only one I could find again. Resource forks were the best thing ever invented. Plus you could use the Resource Manager as a database*! 3/10

  • Do not use the Resource Manager as a database.

Classic icons! Another ode to the cross-stitch sampler, this time I picked some of my favorite icons from the original Mac. Clarus is there of course, Moof! 5/10

I wanted to do a desktop scene for one of the my original Mac cross-stitches, but 512x342 is just too many pixels to stitch! So I cut and pasted the original screen down to a more manageable size, but still with some classic bits. Puzzle desk accessory! 6/10

My bunny Dottie, is going to go on a date with this handsome bachelor, Pancake. He’s at the local rabbit rescue and just got cleared for adoption. Hopefully it’ll be a match!

Pancake was a little too amorous for Dottie, he had a one track mind and Dottie didn’t appreciate it. Did get them to settle briefly next to each other, but then Pancake was back to randy bachelor.

Progress on my 1-bit cross-stitch version of Hokusai’s Great Wave.

If you could go back in time for just a day, relive any day in YOUR LIFE:

  • Would you do it?
  • What day would you revisit?
Gmatom,

@davemark any day before my wife passed. Doesn’t matter if it was a good or bad day, just to have 24 hours with her again.

After a few months I finally got my Aloy cross-stitch back from framing. I like how it turned out, although I had to take it apart at remount it because the framers made kind of a mess.

Took some holiday flowers out to my wife, and made a little scarf for her bunny.

Finished another project, recreating the cover of Richard Moss’ wonderful book, The Secret History of Mac Gaming. Back when he was writing it, I had a fun trip down memory lane talking with him about my years as a Mac game developer, and neat to read stories of all the other game devs. @MossRC

The last picture I got to take with my wife, a year ago tonight. She was in a hospital bed in our living room, on hospice. But we had made these Doc and Marty costumes, so I put mine on, and loosely draped the lab coat over her blankets, and she wore that cheesy wig for the picture. Tomorrow will be one year from the worst day of my life. Love you forever, Suellen.

I finished a small cross-stitch piece for my wife. It’s been almost one year since she passed, I miss her so much.

I ran the local Gilda’s Run 5k this morning, a fundraiser for the cancer support group. This was the last race I ever got to do with Suellen, one year ago. I almost left the starting corral right before they started, it was just too emotional. But I stayed and ran. The Roseanne Roseannadanna outfit did get lots of cheers.

New project done! I spent about 5 months on this picture of Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn: Forbidden West. Love how it turned out. It’s stitched on 22 count cloth, with 38 colors of floss.

I did a little interview with the local news station about the charity bike ride I’m doing for cancer research in honor of my wife, Suellen. I thought it turned out very nice.

@jamesthomson boggles my mind how often this happens with times big tech events. They had weeks to get ready for one thing. Disney has the some problem every single time with race registration opening.
