So I’m trying to write some little static designs with py5 in Thonny, and when I run the program, the sketch window opens but closes immediately, so I can’t really see what I’ve drawn. It only seems to happen when there is no “def draw():” component in the program (so, non-animated programs which only have the “def setup():” part). Is there a setting somewhere to tell Thonny to keep the sketch result open after running?

InstantArcade,
@InstantArcade@leds.social avatar

@mitten Something still needs to be running, so make a draw func that does nothing, e.g.

def draw():
pass

InstantArcade,
@InstantArcade@leds.social avatar

@mitten You're right. I just installed it all and it is staying open for me with the same code

InstantArcade,
@InstantArcade@leds.social avatar

@mitten maybe uninstall and reinstall thonny-p5mode ?

InstantArcade,
@InstantArcade@leds.social avatar

@mitten Wanted to add that I love processing and P5, and have been using that and P5JS for a while. Didn't realize there was also a python version, although I think you can select python in the Processing IDE.

InstantArcade,
@InstantArcade@leds.social avatar

@mitten It's an odd one for sure - looks like there's something going on in the background to allow thonny-p5mode to do its magic (not need to import p5, and run scripts in a special way), so perhaps something got clobbered.

Python itself is difficult enough to keep stable without adding another layer to it.

@villares @mitten I think it's pretty great. I can see myself using this. Thanks for making it.

@villares @mitten @hx2A @py5coding Ahh, well thanks to Jim for making it and to you for your continued enthusiastic involvement.

It must really be something to work in tech and be able to just relocate almost anywhere you want and still have your job or easily get another job that lets you work remotely. I'm jealous of that

InstantArcade,
@InstantArcade@leds.social avatar

@MLE_online It's pretty flexible, yet they will screw you if you move to a low cost of living city, and still demand that you need to physically be in the office much of the time.

Hey @timonsku did you ever root or do anything with your Spotify Car Thing? I still have one in the box, but have not yet tried.
Since Spotify is effectively remotely bricking every single one of these devices it ever sold (which really should be illegal) it sure would be nice if they'd completely open-source it.

@jasoncoon @timonsku I'm interested to know if they can be unbricked.

Seems like there might be a lot on the market soon from people that can't or don't want to jump through the extra hoops.

I missed out on the original sale, had one in my cart, but thought about it too long and they were all gone a few minutes later.

Someone in my neighborhood threw away a whole set of lockers, so I guess I have to own lockers now

@MLE_online Great score! A few years back I got a super nice metal cabinet from the curb. Someone at the end of my street was moving and didn't want to take it with them, so I rushed home and got my truck before someone else snagged it.

InstantArcade,
@InstantArcade@leds.social avatar

@MLE_online This is one of the big differences I love about living in the US.

We've scored several decent things from our street alone, and given just as many back.

Back in England, if you dared to put anything out it would be smashed to pieces and thrown everywhere within minutes.

Does anyone out there in Mastoworld know if there's a way to change the default spot a print is printed on the print bed in Prusaslicer?

My print bed is all tore up at the center, where the slicer defaults to, and I would like to change it so it defaults to one of the corners instead.

Right now I have to manually drag the parts over to the corner every time I slice something.

InstantArcade,
@InstantArcade@leds.social avatar

@MLE_online Not sure about prusaslicer, but there's usually somewhere you can add/edit gcode to the start of the print.

You might need to just modify the move command so it doesn't go to the center, or add your own to move it away from the center.

InstantArcade,
@InstantArcade@leds.social avatar

@MLE_online Ahh, so you want to set the origin of the print to not be the center of the print. I think I got it.

My slicer has an "Origin at center" checkbox, so I would assume that it could start at one side or corner but with the object still centered.

I will go back to lurking now :)

Expanding on a former wacky idea: I used to have metal shelves on my desktop in my apartment in Chicago, but they suffered from being mounted to a flimsy Ikea table. What if I mounted it to my sturdy as heck Husky rolling workbenches? Would need to be between 52 and 72 inches (shown is 60) and then I drill through the tabletop and mount with bolts that match the threads that the feet normally screw into. Don't plan to move the bench much, plus the weight of stuff on top helps hold it in place.

InstantArcade,
@InstantArcade@leds.social avatar

@chris_gammell Love those husky rolling desks. I recommend them to everyone.

Like I need another bike project, right?

I picked this Huffy Sportsmen for $20 because it has a Sturmey Archer three-speed hub and I've been wanting to build a bike with only of these

InstantArcade,
@InstantArcade@leds.social avatar

@MLE_online That 3 speed set-up was on a crap ton of British bikes in the 70s. The hub itself seemed pretty reliable but the tiny chain that operates it was notorious for snapping.

These were the days when the top desired Christmas present was a 10-speed racer. Which evolved into a 12-speed racer in the early 80s before BMX took over.

I used to covet a 12 speed Daws Lightning that was in the bike shop window for a good 6 months or so. Never ended up with it.
