Obviously an informed and nuanced view on from Geoffrey Hinton who just resigned from Google.

"He still believed the systems were inferior to the human brain in some ways but he thought they were eclipsing human intelligence in others." That latter part is I think obviously true. How much that matters will remain to be seen.

But the potential for bad or merely irresponsible people (e.g. those chasing power or profits) to do bad is enormous.

The spam in Latin is the best.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@jrp just deleted it all. Didn’t bother either to attempt to translate, or whether it’s even valid Latin, which I doubt, it’s spam after all.

So what is that “identity manager” you speakest of, @mike ? Curious minds would love to know. :-)

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@mike oooohhhhhh. That reads very similar to the requirements spec in my head for across the . The fediverse would be a much more usable, and useful, and diverse, and (in practice) feature-rich, and innovative, and competitive place if everybody implemented something like this! Kudos to you!!

Created my first repo on codeberg.

First impression: really nice!

Second impression: really slow!

Third impression: HTTP 500 and just where did my repo go when I tried to rename it??? Fortunately it had barely anything in it.

So I filed an issue against . And they fixed the problem within the hour!!

Volunteer organization, operated out of Germany, where it is the middle of the night going into a long weekend.

Wow! I guess I need to figure out how to donate a bit to them.

@sl007 have you considered perhaps sending some posts my way on a subject other than zoom? The world has hardly too few problems to talk about, nor does the fediverse, and I much rather hear 10 solutions you have developed to 10 other problems than hear about one single subject 10 more times, saying basically the same thing every time, given how many times you brought it up already.

Will Bluesky support ActivityPub?

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@davew On balance, I would guess no. No definitive statements have been made that I heard of. Would expect third-party bridges, however. Like @snarfed.org@snarfed.org is writing extending Bridgy.

I want to introduce the term "Territory" to cyberspace. A Territory is a subset of cyberspace that is governed by the same entity.

E.g. when I visit a website, I enter the Territory that the website belongs to, necessarily subjecting myself to the governance in effect in that Territory. That may include TOS, content moderation policy, required payments and fees (e.g. app store cuts) etc

This makes it easy to talk about "the rules", because it's just like crossing borders in the physical world.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

So Facebook and Instagram are built on Meta Territory, and that's largely a Zuck autocracy. Twitter is now a private fief Territory of Elon.

While social.coop, from whose Territory I write this, is a democracy.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@failedLyndonLaRouchite You are correct that most Mastodon instances are Territories, in my terminology, that are governed as autocracies. social.coop, the Territory where I write this, as well as fairly new cosocial.ca, are cooperatives with democratic governance. (That's the reason I'm here.)

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@failedLyndonLaRouchite Actually, I need to use my own terminology better! I should have said "social.coop, where I write this, as well as fairly new cosocial.ca, are independent Territories self-governed as democracies with their users being the constituents entitled to vote."

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@failedLyndonLaRouchite I'm just a citizen of social.coop, that's all. As I said, I know of social.coop and cosocial.ca as general-purpose democratic coops running Mastodon instances, but no others.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@jrp I don't understand your question.

@steveediger indeed administrator-initiated is very much like a trade sanction by one state against another.

@lufthans right, I meant after you log on and do stuff beyond browsing.

@J12t@social.coop avatar

@spreadmastodon : Given the considerations here: https://mstdn.social/@feditips/110260436878159223, have you considered not steering new Mastodon users to mastodon.social at all? Otherwise your very efforts to bring new users to a "decentralized" social network makes it more centralized, no?

/cc @tchambers @davidslifka @feditips @spreadmastodon

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@davidslifka @spreadmastodon @tchambers @feditips @spreadmastodon yes, I’m in agreement with most of it, except for your choice of default server. Picking the very largest server to send more users works against the objective you state, which is decentralization. Instead, I suggest picking a mid-sized server with good uptime and good financials. Or a “server of the month” would be even better.

Hey @SocialCoop, I have 40 notifications but regardless what I do, they never go away in the web interface. Something strange in your Mastodon server configuration?

@davew OmniOutliner Pro, current version, has an option to export the data to file format "Plain text (Symantec MORE 3.1)". Thought you might get a chuckle out of that.

Since some people have asked me, here's a quick thread on initial experience comparison between Bluesky and the fediverse. It's important to note that this comparison is somewhat absurd by default because Bluesky is still tiny & unproven, but there's interest so I'm happy to share what I've observed. Also, I don't get into protocol differences because honestly who cares. So:

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@anildash My understanding is that Bluesky can only do public posts. And "delete" is technically not possible, only marking an object as "dead" while keeping the content around.
