"May my heart hold the earth all the days of my life.
And when I am gone to the farther camps, may my name sound on the green hills,
and may the cedar smoke that I have breathed drift on the canyon walls and among the branches of living trees.
May birds of many colors encircle the soil where my steps have been placed,
and may the deer, the lion, and the bear of the mountains be touched by the blessings that have touched me.
May I chant the praises of the wild and may my spirit range on the wind forever.

MennoWolff,
@MennoWolff@ohai.social avatar

@stux @freemo
You realize that they used to perform lethal injections, but they were no longer able to get the pharmaceuticals to do that. This is because providers worldwide decided not to cooperate.
They claim this is a humane way, because people apparently simply pass out by inhaling the nitrogen gas.
It's still stupid, but it's not entirely their fault that they had to resort to this method.

MennoWolff,
@MennoWolff@ohai.social avatar

@freemo
You're right. I forget which state this was, but they screwed up several times, with this SAME guy!😲
But the availability of the drugs does play a role. Some states stocked up before suppliers stopped delivering.
This is the biggest irony to me: they look to big pharma companies to supply the drugs which are made with the best quality control, because they are not allowed to ask a local redneck chemist to make some of the same drug. That would be "unsafe" 🥴😵‍💫
@stux

MennoWolff,
@MennoWolff@ohai.social avatar

@freemo @stux
Thanks for the clarification.
I'm pretty sure that at the time, whatever article I read explained it that way.
Imho, trying to off someone with N2 is just as prone to f*ckups as having a machine administer an injection, but hey.
We'll see how this pans out. Let's just hope the US will realize that harsh punishment doesn't deter people, especially if they are desperate.

MennoWolff,
@MennoWolff@ohai.social avatar

@freemo
Meh. How is making a machine that administers a fluid intravenously complicated? I would not have guessed that that could go wrong. Doctors and nurses apply IVs literally millions of times each day. I had never heard of blocked veins before that, nor would I guess that such a machine stops working properly.
...

MennoWolff,
@MennoWolff@ohai.social avatar

@freemo
Apparently this guy will have to breathe nitrogen through a mask fitted to his face.
If he starts to breathe heavily, he might suck in extra air from outside the mask. If he contorts his face, it might make an opening.
It beats me why they don't just sedate these people and simply chop off their head or so.
@stux

MennoWolff,
@MennoWolff@ohai.social avatar

@freemo
Still not entirely convinced that this somehow makes it too complicated.
Re 1 and 2. I get that, but people are literally covered in veins. They can find one, and test it before the go ahead.
Re 3, leaking could happen, but it would have to be a whole lot of leakage before it becomes non-lethal. Afaik, overkill is the way they go.
Re 4. See 1. They need a skilled person, that's all.
1/2

MennoWolff,
@MennoWolff@ohai.social avatar

@freemo
Re 5 just use one line one needle. How hard can it be?
Re 6 yes. But they should know what an inmate is taking, right? Sure, some drugs could counteract e.g. the sedative, but seems to me that that would be deliberate sabotage by the inmate.
Re 7. They could simply do exactly the same on both arms. Also prevents users like 1,2 and 4.
2/2

MennoWolff,
@MennoWolff@ohai.social avatar

@freemo
Yeah, understood.
I'm not trying to keep it alive. Far from it, I'm just ranting against the stupidity of it all.
Basically they are switching to another so far untested method. I get your stance of "what could go wrong?" I just see the bears on the road.
I think the real issue is that these procedures are a fixed set of steps, for obvious reasons, but changing any of those steps is apparently too complicated to do, so they go with a radically different method and hope that works.

MennoWolff,
@MennoWolff@ohai.social avatar

@freemo
Yup. See my earlier comment, deterrents don't work when people are desperate.
And is easy to become desperate in the US.

So I wrote Stupid in my late teens and would play it on occasion in company. The usual first response is "You don't actually think you're stupid, do you?"
I didn't really know how to respond to that. The song is about myself, yes, but I don't think I'm stupid... most of the time. Because, sometimes I was made to feel stupid, because I'd forget stuff, or be absent minded. In fact, all the verses are about how others sometimes made me feel. I didn't know it at the time - it was decades later that I made the connection - that I was writing about ADHD.... I assume... I've never gone and got diagnosed. Anyway, shut up, I'm not stupid. Here's my song I just re-recorded. If this was a new song, I'd wait till it was released before tooting it, but an old, terrible version has been up on Soundcloud for over two years. It's gone now, and this is the new updated version. I'll have to pick a date in February to release it to all the streamy places.

Edit: Date picked. Stupid will go live on all the other streamy places on the 16th February, 2024.

Why are we not talking about the elephant in the room?

In the last months of the 2,022nd year Earth Common Era, #Dgar was led to the Mastodon herd by a werewolf from Melbourne, where they climbed up onto the thick matted wool of a beast affectionately known as AusSocial.
Dgar gripped onto the coat and screamed “Hello World!” No one except the werewolf heard.
Dgar began exploring, moving over the beast. So many interesting personalities, such diversity, and although no one seemed to notice them, Dgar noticed the inhabitants. They were being… nice to each other. Courteous and understanding of differing views and perspectives. Dgar was a bit weirded out, but continued to explore.

Explore.

Suddenly the view opened up and Dgar saw the herd for the first time. Beasts just like AusSocial, but all different in their own ways, stretching to the horizons, as far as the eye could see. And there weren’t just Mastodons either. There were all kinds of beasts, all carving out their own little niche. Someone behind whispered “That’s the Fediverse.” Dgar felt the presence of millions of people, working together, competing, evolving, developing… and despairing.

Dgar wandered from feed to feed, community to community, and slowly began to realise that almost everyone was talking about the same things.

Billionaires ruined some place that wasn’t anywhere near as good as where they are right now.
The depressing state of politics and the media that supports it.
Despair over misinformation and the people who believe it.
Gun control.
Climate change.
Natural disasters.
War. Murder. Disease.
Stop!

There’s no jokes.
There’s no shitposting.
There’s no laughter.
There’s lots of love and understanding, but when you look for something funny, there’s a few people asking “Where are all the jokes and shitposters?”

Dgar resolved to fill this niche, and began tooting every joke they could find. For several months, they tooted a joke or meme every twenty minutes while they were awake, and as often as possible while they were asleep. They would traverse great distances, well beyond the herd, to sift through what at times seemed like piles of refuse to find puns and funnies.
After some time, Dgar became known for the funny toots, and many people followed them.

Today, like most days, Dgar climbed up to take in the view of the herd, and a giant smile broke upon his face. There were jokes. There were memes. There were terrible puns. The toots emanating from the very top of AusSocial were light hearted and humorous takes.
It was beautiful.

And so Dgar finds themselves re-considering their place in the community. Does the Fediverse need Dgar to lift their spirit with stolen jokes, old puns, and scavenged memes?
Maybe.
But maybe not so much.

Perhaps the 2,024th year Earth Common Era will be the year Dgar begins concentrating on what Dgar loves.
Making music.

Thank you all for your support. Big love to each and every one of you. ♥️

I did a year in college in the US, in 1990. One of the courses was on European history. Being from Yurp myself, I would have rather skipped it, but it was an obligatory course.
I was utterly shocked to find out that the majority of the course was about Francis Bacon, the philosopher. Mostly because of the influence his works had on the US Constitution.
Hardly anything about all the stuff that happened on mainland Europe.
It took me quite a while to....

MennoWolff,
@MennoWolff@ohai.social avatar

@thepoliticalcat @Barbramon1 @lednabwm
...realize that what I had been taught at home in highschool was all about our little country and some countries around us, but only if it had some effect on us, like the French Revolution, or WWII.
I had learned almost nothing about the histories of the Americas, Africa, Asia...
People are self centered. We call it navel staring in Dutch.

MennoWolff,
@MennoWolff@ohai.social avatar

@thepoliticalcat @Barbramon1 @lednabwm
Yup. Of course we also learned about some of the great things we did in our colonies and then how they were kind of ungrateful and fought a war to get rid of us. Naturally, we gracefully granted them their independences in the end.
(Sure, there were some atrocities along the way, but let's let bygones be bygones, right?) 😢
I do believe education is getting better and kids these days do learn about the dark pages in our history.
Let's hope it continues.

MennoWolff,
@MennoWolff@ohai.social avatar

@thepoliticalcat @Barbramon1
That's anecdotal of course, but I see your point. That kid could just be suffering from severe dyslexia. But a good education system should be able to pick that up and at least attempt to remedy that.
The trend of education in the US declining started looking ago.
Already in the 90s, people were complaining how especially highschool education was falling behind most European countries.

MennoWolff,
@MennoWolff@ohai.social avatar

@ClimateJenny @thepoliticalcat @Barbramon1
Yep. Stuff like that does happen.
In my case, two higher Ed parents, both our daughters turned out to be dyslexic. They are fine now, because we got them coaching, etc. The system here works ok. The school adjusted us early on. Sadly, had we not been able to pay for coaching, it would have taken another 2 semesters before the school would have gotten budget for remedial teaching. Other kids would not have had the same result, unfortunately.
