To all my Canadian friends, a very happy Victoria Day. Have a barbecued burger for me.

Montrealmarc,

@bmoore123 @Bruce_Toews Me as well! Not even permitted to have barbecues on our balcony’s here in Montreal’! In Edmonton it didn’t matter! You could use propane or natural gas.

Montrealmarc,

@bmoore123 @Bruce_Toews Wouldn’t waist the money! Doesn’t even come close to the real bbq taste.

ordered something from CNIB smart life. I presume the print stuff in the envelope is an invoice. Think I could have gotten an accessible format of such a thing. Guess not! also, unfortunately, this does not surprise me.

Montrealmarc,

@Bruce_Toews @bmoore123 I agree! Mind you here in Quebec the CNIB is on a completely different cultural nmosaic from the rest of Canada, cateringmostly French speaking clients and leaving English speaking clients to the Lethbridge Layton MacKay rehab centre the old MAB which is nothing like it used to be either.

Just received an email from Michael at OKO and I guess hey
Ve completed their analysis of the beta tests many of us were doing and I guess they will be releasing the product within the next few months to the Canadian App Store! Guess I will get to test it out again. Hopefully, this time with better results.

https://davidgoldfield.wordpress.com/2024/02/24/february-24-1989-the-anniversary-of-receiving-my-first-braille-n-speak/

Montrealmarc,

@DavidGoldfield i had one at work when I was working for the Feds in Alberta at the time. It was a cool device but I think I liked the Versabraille even more.

Montrealmarc,

@DavidGoldfield I had The II plus and loved it and I always had a backup of my cassette tapes as I used to make copies in my double tape deck and so it always worked well for me. I really enjoyed the device and had a good experience with itl

Montrealmarc,

@Bruce_Toews @DavidGoldfield Artic business vision and JAWS3.0 was my second experience with a computer at work and then eventually on my home computer too. The first computer I got when I started with the Feds in the 80’s was something called a total Talk PC.

I'm glad we finally have the opportunity to beta test OKO in Canada. I have tested it at 3 intersections so far and it is working perfectly. Hopefully after the beta test, this app will come to Canada.

Montrealmarc,

@douglawlor @rowdyamerican I’m having an issue with a light as well—seems like a narrower band on it, a fairly wide crossing, Sherbrooke Street and Cavendish boulevard, a major intersection here in Montreal and the APS is lower then it should be on one side. Difficult for a not only blind but hard of hearing person like me to cope with. Only the one light so far for me that’s an issue.

Montrealmarc, to random

in my view Thomas this is why voice vista is lacking; we need to know those cross streets whether we’re walking or in a motorized vehicle and neither one is spoken with voice vista at the moment. That being said it would be nice if both Soundscape Community and Soundscape from The Scottish Tech Army both implemented map choices which might serve to alleviate the problem https://dragonscave.space/

Montrealmarc,

@JeffBishop well that’s very interesting! All I can tell you is it doesn’t do it for either map setting here in Montreal; but it has never been a problem before so somethings not right!

Montrealmarc,

@JeffBishop so if it’s working for you, I’m wondering why it doesn’t work for me I’ve noticed it in VoiceVista, and lately other apps could there be something within my settings possibly visual settings or something else that is preventing the apps from disseminating the names of street crossings and just saying street crosswalks any ideas on what that might be and where it could be in settings to change it back I’m thinking I may have inadvertently change something so any speculation would be appreciated for your reference. I always have image description, turned on and screen recognition turned off unless there’s a particular problem with a nap not being read that would be the only time I turn screen recognition on, so I don’t think it’s either of those two.

Breaking news: Soundscape is back! The popular app first developed by Microsoft and now open-source has been recreated by a UK non-profit called the Scottish Tech Army. Full details on air now on AMI-audio and on podcast. Listen now: https://www.ami.ca/liveaudio

Montrealmarc,

@JeffBishop @doubletap Sorry Jef! have to disagree with you on this one. I and several others have mentioned in the past that the intersections on voice vista are not being identified either when we’re walking or in a motorized vehicle such as Montreal’s version of Para Transit known as Transport Adapté It is paramount that we as blind folks are provided with this information as we move about and this developer doesn’t seem interested in serving the vested needs of the blind community first and foremost and has his own particular priorities which may not be ours. So it’s a good thing in my view that we have other options to experiment with.

LEGO Braille Bricks Now Available

Press release from The LEGO Group:
–––––

Following an overwhelming response from around the world, LEGO Braille Bricks are now available to purchase online at LEGO.com.

The launch marks a significant milestone in the development of more inclusive learning through play experiences.

With both braille and printed letters, numbers and symbols on each brick, and games designed for all ages, the new ‘LEGO Braille Bricks – Play with Braille’ set makes learning braille more fun and accessible to everyone.

Available in English and French from 1st September 2023 with pre-order starting 24th August and additional languages to follow next year.

Ahead of World Blind Awareness Month this October and in response to global demand, the LEGO Group announces LEGO braille bricks are available to purchase for the first time through LEGO.com. The new product - LEGO Braille Bricks – Play with Braille – is aimed at kids aged 6+ and has been designed so that anyone who is curious about braille, be they blind, partially-sighted or sighted, can have fun getting to know the braille system at home with their family members in a playful, inclusive way.

Until now, LEGO Braille Bricks have only been distributed free of charge by the LEGO Foundation to organisations* specializing in the education of children with vision impairment. Since the launch of these educational kits in 2020, feedback from parents, carers, grandparents, children, and educators has continually highlighted the positive impact the bricks have and how they transform the way children with vision impairment can learn braille. This overwhelming response has led to the creation of LEGO Braille Bricks - Play with Braille to give families the opportunity to enjoy the benefits and practice their tactile skills at home.

LEGO Braille Bricks – Play with Braille includes 287 bricks in five colours: white, yellow, green, red and blue. All bricks are fully compatible with other LEGO products and the studs on each brick are arranged to correspond to the numbers and letters in the braille system, with the printed version of the symbol or letter situated below the studs.

The set also includes two baseplates to build on and comes in packaging with braille embossing. To enhance the play experience and support pre-braille skill development, a series of supporting play starters are available on LEGO.com and will teach players how to orient, attach and stack the bricks through well-loved games such as Rock, Paper, Scissors, which all members of the family can take part in.

Montrealmarc,

@9to5Mac really? You mean somebody at Apple finally woke up and smelt the coffee? Would be nice to have long enough cables; keep in mind that we’d have to replace all our bricks and cables once we acquire a 15 or beyond. Annoying but worth it in my view.

I don't think an app is the way to go here. Hard to do accurately and many seniors don't have smart phones and they are the majority of us.

Montrealmarc,

@bmoore123 @bruce_toews here we have a website for Transport adapté our paratransit for example, I for one would much rather see a nap, and in this case, I would want a nap as well rather than a website not everybody has access to computers and apps on an iPhone, are generally a lot simpler and less cumbersome to use rather than trying to use a website on an iPhone just my opinion

Montrealmarc,

@bmoore123 @bruce_toews that is indeed overthinking it just to create a few more bureaucratic jobs in Ottawa that is absolutely unnecessary. The template over the ballot works for me. How hard is it to mark your selection in the hole and fold it up and put it in not difficult for me at least so let’s just stick with that for now unless they want to get into machines and then there’s something else to break down and more bureaucrats to hire to fix them.

Montrealmarc,

@bmoore123 @bruce_toews @Lynessence I have a very cynical view of course as you know Brian in particular I used to work for the federal and then the Alberta government so my view of course of government is cynical and now that I’m retired I don’t give a shit I just say what I think they can’t fire me for it so I don’t give a damn!

okay, so after like 10 years, talking microwave finally ended. What are people using for sort of accessible options now? going to have to look for something new.

Montrealmarc,

@bmoore123 Usually there’s an overlay already on the microwave that you know tells you what the buttons do then in the box usually inside the instruction manual there’s a French overlay, so what I do is I take that French overlay and have somebody with partial vision or site who knows Braille put what I want on it the numbers, and what the buttons do based on what’s on the English overlay and then Plastered over the original on the microwave and for me that works and you can get your basic Walmart or Canadian Tire oven without spending a lot of cash just to have something accessible
