@daringfireball

I find it surprisingly useless. If it was on ipad and I could hand write entries, or on ipad or mac so I could type entries, it would be useful.

As it is, it is completely useless to me. DayOne need have no fear of it.

Bastards clearly don’t want me on twitter. There is nothing in my behaviour that is spammy or manipulative, although twitter is flooded with posts which are clearly both those things, so one has to wonder what they are smoking.

@apple missed opportunity or development opportunity?

Squeeze to bring up this menu is good, but how much better if barrel roll scrolled through the options! (Rather than do it manually like I am here)

Showing the rotating menu scrolled manually

You receive a call on your phone.
The caller says they're from your bank and they're calling about a suspected fraud.

"Oh yeah," you think. Obvious scam, right?

The caller says "I'll send you an in-app notification to prove I'm calling from your bank."

Your phone buzzes. You tap the notification This is what you see.

Still think it is a scam?

@Edent

It’s interesting how a relatively simple change in the message on the alert (as you describe here) could dramatically reduce the effectiveness of this scam.

“What Happens When a Romance Writer Gets Locked Out of Google Docs”

Honestly not sure anymore why anybody would risk using cloud-based apps as their primary writing tool https://www.wired.com/story/what-happens-when-a-romance-author-gets-locked-out-of-google-docs/

PlaneSailingGames,
@PlaneSailingGames@chirp.enworld.org avatar

@baldur I read the article and the title seems a bit misleading - it isn’t that the writer is locked out of their google docs (which would be a nightmare) but that they were stopped from sharing them with reviewers - very awkward for sure, but not what that headline is warning about?

    That’s interesting - I wonder if at one time, a long time ago, it was recommended that you brought the snake in for identification? I’m sure I’d heard that in the past, and it feels a bit like ‘folk knowledge’ that has stayed over time rather than lots of people just ‘thinking it might be a good idea’

    Stupid problem.

    If you use the clock app on Sonoma to set a timer, when the timer goes off... it never stops. You can't stop it. You can't kill it. It goes on... forever...

    Anyone found a solution other than reboot?!?

    It is getting harder and harder to use Facebook as a developer.

    I use it for Single Sign On for https://OpenBenches.org - because I don't want to handle usernames & passwords.

    Now it is demanding that I create a "business portfolio" to continue.

    (Don't come at me with "delete Facebook" unless you can show me how to do OAuth with every Fediverse server in PHP.)

    I was puzzled at first, but then realised it is probably ‘Gran Bretan’ so sort order based on the french version of a name!

    (Assuming for a moment this isn’t an April fools joke)

    Working for a big business that allows facebook login, it is also frustrating that you can only associate the businesses facebook stuff with personal facebook identities

    Nightmare to manage with people coming and going at a company over the years.

    Starting to see news sites that ONLY allow me to login by sending me an email link. Wasting my time -- not much, admittedly, but adding steps to a simple process is annoying to the user -- is part of the business model.

    PlaneSailingGames,
    @PlaneSailingGames@chirp.enworld.org avatar

    @dangillmor It’s a good security measure from their point of view - ensuring that you have control of the email address associated with you account and not relying upon you choosing a nice strong password that doesn’t get breached.

    They can get in lots of trouble if customer credentials are breached, so they hate the friction but do it for safety (customers and theirs)

    RIP Louis Gossett Jr.

    What a career!

    My favourite film of his seems to be one hardly anyone else has seen. He was under full prosthetics and still gave a stellar, heart-rending performance.

    I was looking around to see if anyone is making a decent small (7"-8") tablet running Linux when I realized that no one is even making a good small tablet running Android. (Amazon and Samsung small tablets are not good...)

    It's a reminder that Google once sold a GREAT small Android tablet, the Nexus 7 -- and like so many things the company has produced, killed it off in a fit of boredom or stupidity.

    I actively use four Twitter-like platforms, God help me, and while engagement can be stochastic and inconsistent, I've found as a general trend that link posts to actual journalism perform much better on some than others. Here's how I'd rank the four in terms of engagement per follower, specifically with link posts, from most to least:

    1. Bluesky
    2. Mastodon
      [big gap]
    3. Threads
      [another gap]
    4. X
    PlaneSailingGames,
    @PlaneSailingGames@chirp.enworld.org avatar

    @willoremus

    That’s interesting. My experience has been slightly different

    1. Twitter
    2. Bluesky
      [big gap]
    3. Mastodon
      [huge gap]
    4. Threads

    I think I’m going to give up on threads entirely, as it just doesn’t seem worth it there. I think that Mastodon response might be hampered by the server I’m on.

    Have you changed your website? The old RSS feed really doesn’t work properly now - it shows a tiny fragment of an article, and if I try to open up the site (I’m using NetNewsWire), it basically times out while trying to load it.

    RSS is brilliant for the open web, I do hope you’ll fix it
