Why would a professional gambler, a “career” track with no need for managing anyone but one’s self, want to be hamstrung by the reality and nuance of management? You know (I presume) how exhausting that is.

No, a smart (or even passably well written) professional gambler could present their legitimate skill set for jobs that make use of it.

They also, aside from hard skills (corroborated by good record keeping), would presumably develop or possess at least above average soft skills in the areas of communication, assessing client needs, and negotiating.

They would be terrific lenders, corporate salesmen, insurance investigators, the list goes on and on.

EDIT: Meant to reply one level up, sorry.

Biden Condemns Trump as Dire Threat to Democracy in a Blistering Speech (www.nytimes.com)

President Biden on Friday delivered a ferocious condemnation of Donald J. Trump, his likely 2024 opponent, warning in searing language that the former president had directed an insurrection and would aim to undo the nation’s bedrock democracy if he returned to power....

Mafia “Dons” get old and senile too. Hitler shat. Mussolini farted. There are no gods and only the masters we allow. Does it need to be said that human evil also ages?

The metric for success shouldn’t be a high number of end users reporting phishing emails, but that seems to be what upper management wants to see, which just incentives less resources invested in better scanners with less than a 20% false negative rate.

The eternal battle between the “oh we go by data backed metrics, much measured, I feel this is the best” executive suite and the poor saps beneath twirling the data backed signs going ignored until money or disaster strikes.

Pity businesses aren’t formed from the bottom up; it’s like an octopus deciding not to listen to its arm brains until the shark has a bite of its head.

It’s okay, many of them will learn when the fascists turn on empathetic people like them, people like their LGBTQIA+ friends, and an ever more purity-shifting test stupider than a swatch of paint held to their faces.

Because people (maybe some like you?) don’t explain nuance and responsibility to them, just throw blame around and make noises about where all of the fault lays (it’s never also on your–metaphorical you, I hope–laps is it?) and why this agenda is better and would not lead to this or that.

You don’t need to address me if you prefer of course. I don’t actually foresee any useful dialogue here so just yelling at two-faced clouds.

Did you think the MS C-Suite does much other than bloviate on LinkedIn in-between (and during) meetings? It’s for them and execs everywhere.

While I see your point and truth is we’ll just never know, I am afraid you might be a bit naive.

I just don’t see the circumstances for a random burglar to be snooping through folders close enough to find the presumably relatively hidden items they’d need to find, let alone that happening alongside the low odds an actual burglar would risk their own security to do the right thing.

This is exactly what burgling is. Having been the unfortunate victim once not even the spines of my books were safe. Burglars watch the same movies, so they will cut into your cushions, paintings, go through folders, behind outlets.

Then I got way too into a show about two ex burglars who would look for volunteer houses to break into, and yeah. No stone is left unturned and with far more diligence they would ever put in a real job.

I agree with you 100% but boy howdy, you’re, bluntly, a terrible communicator this morning. Just dropping here arguing with your own demons. Neither you nor the other person are on the same topic. They’re only seeing up to the election.

You’re rightly looking further and calling for people to hold the fire under their Representatives so the shittery and evil can be burned out of them, specially as the fire is turned up as time goes on, not lowered.

That makes the world a better place, but no one hears your message when you call them spineless cynics for their ignorance (of your point, the only thing you have in evidence).

Seriously, read yours and their responses again. They’re looking at the base of the hill and arguing. You’re looking at the horizon and arguing something else. Maybe direct their gaze to the goal instead alongside the crushing of all their held opinions?

Promethiel,
@Promethiel@lemmy.world avatar

No no no. Nuance can only be used to pave a high road to hell. Get out of here with using it to fire back more intelligently yet equally dirty. We can only do one thing at a time, so it’s high road all the way to the grave.

I mean, what’s next in your suggestions? Using the free and available plethora of Republican politician child sex scandals as non-slanderous, factual, and real ammo fodder?

Promethiel,
@Promethiel@lemmy.world avatar

It makes perfect sense if you consider two things:

  1. Consider the reality of ITAR and the value assessment of actually breaking it versus being able to say whatever you want in a post truth society.
  2. The CEO in this particular instance is, to put it charitably, not an example to be held and compared against if seeking a baseline “reasonable person”-esque standards in the self-serving (and self-editing) annals of corporate history.

I’ll be honest. I want to believe in the Fediverse and Lemmy, really really hard.

It’s ideals (rather, the gestalt of the best of what everyone says is the best of Federation) appeals strongly.

But sometimes, it’s instance after instance of complaining about this or that. Double points when it’s all reddit complaining.

I dunno if being a heavy content creator necessitates an air of misguided superiority but there’s no more nuance here than anywhere else, and the content can’t seem to form precisely because everyone decides to take their toys away and do their own thing at the smallest provocation.

I don’t use them on my phone because fuck their app, but I’ve found no choice but to join up with an alias and as much extensions to make their job harder as Firefox allows, just to have genuine discussions on hyper specific topics from a PC.

For the US (and there’s likely very similar systems and even better of course systems elsewhere) there are options with tracking and extra protections can be added for the lower classes of mail such as receipts, tracking, insurance, etc.

The standard a shakey-hand old person might use in the US is First Class Mail (It’s the US, so of course the fancy name denotes the lowest retail tier) which is not trackable without paying, but by US law is sealed against inspection (giant asterisk, but historically the Inspector General’s Office is known as even more grimly attached to their task than the IRS) which does offer some reassurance.

A postman messing with the mail is a felony crime that hits so hard in federal court, you don’t get many morons risking it a year. The Feds love easy cases to pad their numbers, they would metaphorically pillory the fuck out of a rogue postman.

EDIT: The US postal service also sells “Postal Money Orders” which can be exchanged at any post office or any retail business offering postal services for cash. That’s an inexpensive option that my grandma-in-law uses to stuff her cards.

They could just bomb them from airplanes if they do so, but that option is historically only reserved for thriving black communities.

In a perfect world, NASA was always funded like Humanity depended on it since after WW2, and by 2010 a unified global space organization supplanted the need for any militaries because we’re too busy building fission plants on the moon to bind with that sweet HE3 to power the Space Mobile Homes affordable for all because of course we researched fusion without profit motive until it worked.

Kinda my preferred alt-world, now someone please fire up all of the world’s particle accelerators on high at once, that’ll get us there right?

I want to commend you for what you’re doing. It doesn’t feel good, but you must remain effective. You can’t re-align schemas through Internet comments however, don’t burn yourself out.

Promethiel,
@Promethiel@lemmy.world avatar

It isn’t.

I can’t speak for all PoC but I can speak for me. It’s been screamed for the ages. Maybe not all Dragons care about ideology, but it’s the goddamn minority.

The rule is you (the straw billionaire in this scenario) or your Robber Baron grandpappy were able to rise that way by seeing some as subhuman, and others as rubes. They still discuss phrenology and blood poisoning for fuck’s sake.

Stop assuming the bulk of The Capitalists don’t absolutely abhor the concept of other races sharing their resources. They’d happily make an all-white caste system.

They keep screaming that’s what they want.

Joke answer: It’s cute.

Real answer: It’s cute and because of that broad appeal it’s easy good PR. NASA has to appeal to the populace to hope they demand their Representatives properly fund them.

Promethiel,

You are—tragically—100% percent correct in my opinion. That is as I also see, the reality we live in. The shortsighted Neoliberal imbéciles would choke to death on a dollar if they had to eat their way to a penny.

However.

Even though things will, to heavily understate, suck, I’d urge you to not fully give in to despair. Last time Fascism rose, it bit them in the ass and they backed the other horse eventually.

I am not looking forward to dodging (or liquidating) brown shirts and Nazis, so if we can avoid that and just be poised for when climate catastrophe puts on the knife-edge of “this has never happened before” that would be great.

Those with thoughts like yours will be needed. The Resistance will need leaders and scholars to delineate the purpose.

Reality sucks and we shouldn’t have to fight for it because of thousands of greedy piggies, but it’s manifesting and we’ll have to decide.

We need to vote. We should all vote. Then start working on what we need beyond that in what little steps we all can. The literal morning after the election, preferably.

Texas power plants have no responsibility to provide electricity in emergencies, judges rule (www.kut.org)

Almost three years since the deadly Texas blackout of 2021, a panel of judges from the First Court of Appeals in Houston has ruled that big power companies cannot be held liable for failure to provide electricity during the crisis. The reason is Texas’ deregulated energy market....

Promethiel,
@Promethiel@lemmy.world avatar

I presume your post is just informational with a rhetorical question at the end to get people to think.

But if you have any doubts as to why “free market” solutions don’t ever work even remotely as well as theoretical models would suggest in the US, there’s a simple answer that always appends itself before any other legitimate challenges can be honestly addressed.

There are no truly “free market” solutions in the US.

There is no reason for the rulers to allow the politicians to legistate the ability for anyone to threaten their supremacy without Byzantine, unjust, and decidedly non-equitable loops powered by the Establishment powers that the wealthy have captured.

It’s not exclusively an ADHD, neurotypical, OR neurodivergence trait. Severity and effects on life matter. It can be a trait associated with a myriad of executive dysfunction disorders (e.g. Autistic Inertia), ADHD, anxiety, and some personality disorders as well. Finally, an otherwise mentally neurotypical person will behave the same way given a big enough stressor.

Severity and effects on life, that’s the first measure to look at before asking “But everyone is like X or Y, sometimes”.

Promethiel,
@Promethiel@lemmy.world avatar

The greater of the evils would happily seek to make me go round out my trans friends and kill them, then later seek to get my white friends to round me up and kill me after that’s done. I’m really happy you feel you have the luxury of moral superiority, but that doesn’t matter here at the endgame.

Promethiel,
@Promethiel@lemmy.world avatar

As I said, I am happy for your comfortable position (mental or otherwise) to be so noble. I can’t help change the world if I’m dead or in work camp, and honestly helping the marginalized in my community already takes all the effective energy I can muster. I guess since I can not hold all of the world’s sins at hand, I must defer to you and grab a shovel?

Promethiel,
@Promethiel@lemmy.world avatar

I thought you were gonna make some cool points about world building but then the ending came. To address your DnD example; that’s already covered by canon. Adventurers and what they earn (monetarily, influence, and good old finders keeper’s wise) is at minimum a whole order of magnitude above what the level 0s that make up the world’s backdrop have access to.

A blind adventurer who is destitute could find a scroll of lesser restoration (not arguing it would work here or not, that’s DM fiat) or otherwise get access to restoration of some sort if sought.

The blind after mining accident level 0 beggar is screwed, but the blinded by hunting accident noble could see by the end of the day.

The blind from birth halfling who can not miss what they’ve never had before and who gets around just fine with blind sight, wouldn’t necessarily feel that there is anything to be fixed; use that wish people for legendary loot.

That’s the bleakest and reality is stranger than fiction angle tho.

They’re fictional worlds, it’s perfectly okay to make one in which differently abled people can feel represented without reality being a dick to them if you know, not being a dick is something that matters to you.
