So, the #Netherlands now has selected a prime minister for its new fashy govt. The new PM is not part of any party, and headed up the intelligence agency and the anti-terrorist agency. That doesn't sound foreboding at all...

It truly feels to be at the end of an era, with Hashicorp selling to IBM, terraform being forked, redis being fork and so on. It's kinda weird that none of the new stuff out there is as interesting as some of those tools were at the time, but maybe I'm just boring and bored now.

@ainmosni @sszuecs at work we run tons of stuff on prem, I'm well aware of the tradeoffs, but IMO the conversation is often simplified to a point that doesn't make sense, the classic arguments don't apply to everybody in the same way as it's largely driven by scale, phase of the company and even world situation. So yeah I'm never arguing for one or the other.

The trial begins, for real this time. I used an email alias to get out of the punishment box.

First impressions:

  • Face unlock is nicer than finger unlock
  • I hate how settings are laid out
  • The Home Screen is so cluttered
  • The keyboard could use easier access to punctuation when typing
  • notifications are really bad

Let’s see how I feel in a month.

handing off projects after you have mentored someone behind you is the way to go, not when you’re already burnt out. ask a maintainer around you what their strategy is for retirement.

@paris if you can find someone to mentor and that wants to help with the project. It's no one's duty to take over the responsibility from a maintainer and at the same time there is often too much responsibility that is felt from the maintainer side, both contribute to bad situations unfortunately.

@robpike I guess their reasoning is that it was a problem before the notch in case you had too many apps, but I can't understand how making it 1000x worse is reasonable. And the notch itself makes no sense, but that's another story.

I’m happy that a popular tech site is talking of how modern devices want to lock us in walled gardens. The web is better than apps. Classic operating systems, all of them, are better than mobile devices from the point of view of what the user is allowed to do. And that’s also why I believe side loading or other regulations to open up those platforms are so important.

Not that my previous GP was bad, but my current GP is just better run, as in, when you make an appointment, you will wait max 10 minutes.

Other great things are that I have a more casual and friendly rapport with him, and that they specialise in medical needs. The waiting room is the most diverse I've ever seen.

And to make things better, I can make appointments online and get results texted.
