1/10 of my top ten favourite (not best) photos of 2023
I bought a M4/3 camera and one 12-100mm lens to take with me on safari in the summer. Before that, I tested this camera one late afternoon near home. Hard to catch a dragonfly in flight, so after a number of misses I was happy to get this image. The blurred background is the evening sun on waterlilies in a pond.

Tassen haben eigenwillige Eigenschaften: sie schaffen es meistens bis in die Spüle, aber nie bis zum Geschirrspüler daneben.

„As far as the archivist knew, the 48 box files locked in an attic above the Institute for the History of Medicine at the University of Bern had never been opened.

At the turn of the 20th century, the Swiss were plagued by strange, interlinked medical conditions, which existed elsewhere to a degree, but in Switzerland were endemic in more than 80 per cent of the country. It was a curse that had a mark: the goitre.“ It can result from a deficiency of iodine in the diet.

One thing I love about Apple Watch is the resting heart rate measurement. It is a good indicator of illness in my case. If it is elevated then my body is probably fighting an infection (or I’m at high altitude). Currently back to 50.

As far as I know, there is no „AI“. There are LLMs and ML. Use shit data, get shit data. Use biased/bad algorithms, get biased/shit results.

@ianRobinson Have you seen the video where Denis Villeneuve breaks down the scene where Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) is challenged to a test, the Gom Jabbar, to see if his humanity will overcome his animal impulses? https://youtu.be/GoAA0sYkLI0?si=7Cs7mFrRdD_6ze01
I hadn’t seen it until now. Denis is masterful.

In the space of 15 seconds, this credible blues song was generated by the latest AI model from a startup named Suno. All it took to summon it from the void was a simple text prompt: “solo acoustic Mississippi Delta blues about a sad AI.” The song is the work of two AI models in collaboration: Suno’s model creates all the music itself, while calling on OpenAI’s ChatGPT to generate the lyrics and even a title: “Soul of the Machine.” https://soundcloud.com/rs-539916550/soul-of-the-machine
