@nyrath I'm exactly the opposite of the one guy, I'm an engineer, not an artist.

@sudnadja@vivaldi.net avatar

And a more distant view. Asteroids are an underrated playing area for traveller, I think. You can circumnavigate the entire world, possibly jump to escape velocity (for small asteroids) and the non-uniform gravity fields make orbits around the asteroids unstable and somewhat unpredictable.

@nyrath @cerebrate @60sRefugee @maxthefox @michael_w_busch @sudnadja Though I should add, that Cossacks, and Tatars are often differentiated by religion, such as my father had the "Tatar fold" and people would ask him where he was from, thinking him Asian. Though I beleive some of my family might be Baluch. By late Tsarist times, Cossack was a military unit, light cavalry, or lancers.

Space artists might want to look into NASA's JPL modular habitat system. The mix-n-match modules can be shuffled to make a wide variety of spaceships and habitats.

Oh I forgor about the coffee club, prepare for the mother of all catchups!

Mar 1: What inspired you to begin writing?

Many factors, but rediscovering @nyrath 's wonderful Atomic Rockets site really pushed me to becoming a hard sci-fi writer.

Wouldn't have done it without a huge source of inspiration like that. It's less daunting than it sounds, honestly even not violating high-school-level physics and thinking about consequences can make sci-fi "hard" these days...

Robert_Brandt,
@Robert_Brandt@spacey.space avatar

@maxthefox @nyrath I remeber finding Atomic Rockets so long ago, I think it was with IE 5 or 7 there was a browser incompatibility where the lack of word wrap meant for lots of scrolling.

1/3) I watched the first episode, and part of the second, of the 1973 SF series "The Starlost."

The early 70s saw a terrible drought of SF on television. As a tween, I invested great hopes in the show. I was familiar with the generation ship concept.

@nyrath @StefanEJones I always thought it was Orphans of the Shy, and another book that (that slips my mind) were the main inspiration for MA. We played some scenario as clones, pre-paranoia, pretty weird. Starlost I saw too, though the fight is legenday. Bova also re-wrote it and released it as a series.

@nyrath I liked it too (I like 3D maps a lot), I agree that with knowing the game vs being new to it was a real advantage. I have a lot of other microgames, car wars etc.. I am still a big fan of inexpensive gaming.

Robert_Brandt,
@Robert_Brandt@spacey.space avatar

@nyrath Were they the one with a grease pencil? I played that some but didn't own it. I had ton of sci-fi games, though many like you say, they could be won in setup. Imperium, you would know who won withing the first few turns. I also had one called Diadem, fairly complex iirc; and why we alsways wandered back to starfire, with I kept in a trapper keeper folder, the build your own scenarios made it adjustable for those who weren't as good at tactics. Though I also played a lot of Squad Leader.
