Autistic Welsh NHS emergency care quality improvement person.
(they/them or he/him - don't really have a gender to speak of but those are familiar.)

Most important:
Trans rights are human rights; Black lives matter; Tories always despise you even if they pretend not to.

Enthusiastic about woodland, cricket, silent film, constitutional stuff, birds, gardening, tea, sandwiches.

Well, I've decided to move instance. Time to take another step in my fedi life. I've had a wonderful time at neurodifferent.me, it's a great instance, but I'm off in a slightly different direction now.

I'll be residing in a nice new house on Beige Street, just round the corner from Neurodifferent Avenue. The neighbourhood is as nice in one as it is the other. But sometimes, a change of scenery is welcome.

I'll be the same name over there, @RolloTreadway, if anyone wants to follow me, or block me, or hunt me down and hit me with fish, whatever.

Thought to myself, I should recommend these two cookbooks. Because they're great. So I will. These are my two holy texts.

The left one is American and the right one British, so I'm covering multiple traditions here.

Another for the #TuneTuesday #SongsYouWereToldToListenTo (I wish there was a way to make hashtags default to CamelCase).

This was recommended a lot more recently, sometime earlier this year, by @sheepnik, who knows a huge amount of very interesting music indeed.

And it's great. Creeps darkly into your soul. Radie Peat's voice really is a wonder of the world.

The #TuneTuesday prompt is #SongsYouWereToldToListenTo.

Several years ago, a dear friend (who is sadly not on fedi) told me that if I liked such-and-such, I should try Anna Meredith. Truer words never spoken.

I now unreservedly LOVE Anna Meredith. She's such an extraordinary and unique musician. Techno bangers, new and traditional interpretations of Vivaldi, electropop, education projects, arrangements of Prince songs for cello and tuba... there's just nobody like her.

And on top of all this, she's a really rather fantastic person. First time I ever saw her live, it wasn't touring an album or anything like that. It was as part of a project to help women and NB people into songwriting. Her career is as much that sort of thing as it is composing and performing.

Oh, and she makes brilliant videos too. Which is why I've gone for this track, Paramour.

(oh, and no, I don't remember what the such-and-such was)

I've just been reminded about sandwiches, and I meant to post earlier:

I really struggle with eating out. But I was committed to doing so on my holiday this year (well, technically I already did when I stopped over in London before coming out here, but in France too). It may be my last day today, but I went out and had sandwich et frites for lunch.

Yes, I know you're probably thinking I'm in semi-rural France, I should've gone to a nice traditional neighbourhood bistro. But that is way beyond me. And a sandwich with frites is traditionally French, very much so. Nothing wrong with that.

Plus the place I went to is very popular (I managed to get there just before all the working people on their lunch breaks arrived). So I think I've done what I intended to do.

Oh, and it was delicious, and the server was very considerate of my bad French.

And I sat on the beach for a bit on my way back. Full of sandwich, full of frites.

RolloTreadway, to cake

I managed to obtain patisserie today! A slice of flan (not really that colour, my phone camera isn't good) and a tarte citron. Or maybe tarte au citron. Not sure.

Climbed up to the ruined tower that overlooks the village, that protected the estuary back when there was an estuary to protect (it filled with silt centuries ago).

See that kind of pinkish bit in the middle? Salt pans. They turn pink in the sun when the tide is out. Unfortunately, by the time I walked over to them, the tide was in.

On Friday, a boat pulled up outside my window (I'm on the fourth floor, or fifth in American counting). It left this morning. Farewell temporary neighbours!

I'm also going to attempt to leave, in the hope that yesterday's abdo trouble has gone away. Wish me luck.

I'm going for a walk around this lagoon. It might be quite nice.

A quick and very early #JukeboxFridayNight before I go about my day.

The theme is #ShowOfHands or #HaveASay, with important votes coming up in various parts of the world. So here's a bit of election-related calypso for everyone.

I have made it to the place I'll be calling home for a little while.

RolloTreadway,

@fkamiah17 No, Gruissan, a village about 80km along the coast from Sète.

RolloTreadway, to random

I am waiting to be collected by a stranger who doesn't speak English at a station in a place I've never been before.

Possibly an understatement, but this is not great for a chronically anxious person.

RolloTreadway,

@fkamiah17 I will let you know if I do! Thank you

RolloTreadway,

@fkamiah17 We managed okay with our mutually incomprehensible mix of basic French and English words.

Can't really contribute to #TuneTuesday this week as I have much travelling to do. But quickly, and not exactly #PirateLife but suitably nautical, here's The Great Silkie Of Sule Skerry, sung by Julie Fowlis with Becky and Rachel Unthank.

It tells the story of a Silkie, a seal in the water and a man upon the land, who has a son with a Scottish woman - but in doing so, creates a curse that will wash through the waves for many years to come.

I arrived almost 90 minutes before my eurostar departure, as was clearly recommended. 60-90 minutes. Definitely not less than 60.

Took me ten minutes, if that, to get through border control. Leaving me with a lot of waiting.

Oh well.

RolloTreadway,

Anyway, here's a Lucombe oak for #ThickTrunkTuesday.

RolloTreadway,

@fkamiah17 Lots of stress still to come, though.

I Thought It Was About Time For Another Movie Question!

What is a movie that is great, but you only need to watch it once?

RolloTreadway,

@RickiTarr Threads. Oh dear lord. I am never watching that again.

Everyone should see it once. Everyone should be forever traumatised by it once. Nobody needs to go through it twice, unless they forgot its lessons.

Exciting news!

I was very disappointed, because the Kew Gardens site said that the Temperate House was closed in preparation for a new exhibition.

But it turns out, almost all of the Temperate House was actually open, they were only working on a couple of little bits today!

Which was especially helpful as it started pissing down outside.

The problem of is that in many ways her diagnosis is/was right:

''I believe that the reason for the problems we have is the 25 years of economic consensus that have led us to this period of stagnation...And I believe it is vital that we understand that & shatter that economic consensus, if we are to avoid worse problems in the future'!

The problem was what she wanted to replace it with was merely a hard-boiled version of what went before.... not a radical change in policy direction.

RolloTreadway,

@fkamiah17 @ChrisMayLA6 Not sure how you can rehabilitate someone who was never more than an empty meme.

I think, rather, it's people who agreed with her and Kwarteng and refuse to accept the overwhelming evidence that they were completely wrong.
