I think that AI being synonymous with gen-AI is a huge disservice to actually useful topics: compression, machine translation, text-to-speech and speech-to-text engines, upscalers, forecasting algorithms, etc.

Apple apologizes for iPad ad

“Creativity is in our DNA at Apple, and it’s incredibly important to us to design products that empower creatives all over the world,” said Tor Myhren, the company’s VP of marketing communications. “Our goal is to always celebrate the myriad of ways users express themselves and bring their ideas to life through iPad. We missed the mark with this video, and we’re sorry.”

Interestingly, Google used the same language to conclude its apology for its generative AI’s historical depictions of race. It explained its intention with flowery language and then said “But it’s missing the mark here”.

I wonder if we’ll be seeing more of this type of response to corporate tone-deafness (a generous term) going forward. Big “I’m sorry you feel that way (but this isn’t indicative of any problems with me)” vibes.

mail servers phasing out tlsv1.0 and tlsv1.1 sounds like a great idea until your landlord wonders why you didn’t receive emails from their tlsv1.0-only server about them increasing your rent, or until you never get the offer letter from the place you applied to, or 500 other things that most people have to deal with at some point.

Edit: battery removed successfully. I just had to further deform the plate, force the switch open, and the latches fell into place for me to slide the plate out. This is resolved.

My laptop formed a spicy pillow that stretched the outer frame. And now the outer frame is impossible to detach; the lock switch is stuck. The battery was last replaced two or three years ago.

I just want to remove the swollen battery to use the laptop on A/C. For that I need to open the back which is stuck in place. Anybody have any pointers? I attached a photo.

If the back is too damaged, I’ll have to find a replacement part. Worst-case, I’ll get a new laptop (this one’s wi-fi and bluetooth is also busted and the screen hinge is barely on, so it’s about time). If that happens, I’ll still need to remove the SSD.

The laptop is an HP Elitebook 840 G1 from 2013.

Anybody know of (ideally mobile-friendly) FOSS forum software (besides mailing lists) that doesn’t have a copyright-granting CLA or open-core model? Discourse, Flarum, and Nodebb require a CLA.

I’m aware of phpBB and bbj (read-only web UIs are available; no read-write web UIs).

I admit that I feel salty about the word “enshittification” taking off instead of my phrase for the same thing: “user domestication”. I prefer the latter because it emphasizes the gross disrespect so many platforms show their users, and how the lack of autonomy/mobility naturally leads to enshittification.

Any platform able to get away with enshittification will do so when given the incentive. Enshittification emphasizes the process of a platform’s downfall; we should be taking steps to prevent that from happening in the first place by keeping platforms open. Vigilance against enshittification is misplaced when better spent against user domestication.

We should make a compatibility matrix of MastoAPI clients’ feature support beyond vanilla Mastodon. All these clients support sending + rendering reactions:

Web/PWA:

  • Whalebird, Fedistar: quotes I think?
  • Enafore: quotes, MFM, different posting mimetypes (Markdown, HTML, BBCode, HTML, MFM), bubble timeline
  • Mangane: quotes, MFM, different posting mimetypes
  • Phanpy (?)

Android:

  • Megalodon + Moshidon

iOS:

  • Feditext: partial support for rendering quotes.

Flutter:

  • Kaiteki: Markdown, maybe posting with different mimetypes?

I know of no clients with reaction support for Freedesktop, macOS, or Windows.

I’ll edit this post as more people make suggestions.

Whenever I discover a new GUI toolkit, my first question is always “is it more native than the Web?” For reference, here are some ways Web apps have better system integration than Flutter:

  • System fonts, font hinting settings, and font fallback settings.
  • System text navigation shortcuts.
  • System scrollbar visibility, thickness, and click settings/behavior.
  • System highlight menus and controls (on touchscreens).
  • System display scaling settings.
  • System reduced-motion settings (An API is documented, but I have never used a Flutter app that actually disables animations. I may be wrong).
  • System reduced-transparency settings.
  • System forced-colors mode (Windows High Contrast Mode).
  • System color palettes (some browsers support setting default colors without necessarily forcing the palette).
  • System media controls (play/pause/skip, current track, e.g. using MPRIS on freedesktop platforms).

It’s an easier question to answer than my second question: “What WCAG conformance level can I hope for?

Extraordinary Attorney Woo is such an amazing show like holy shit.

Yes I know it seems to start from the “autistic kid is also a prodigy” trope; I don’t like how the trope makes it look like intelligence “makes up for” autism or serves to invalidate ableism (it being the way to invalidate ableism is ironically even more ableist). but this show’s depiction of it really does feel like a refreshingly good exception to the norm on that oversaturated front.

It had such good depictions of masking, overstimulation, and echolalia.

even though masking of innocent behaviors shouldn’t be necessary, it sadly is (around most people) to varying degrees and the show doesn’t shy away from uncomfortable realities like that. I like that it shows how having just one person who accepts you makes it easier to mask with others who don’t.

Certain search engines have reached out to me since I made my list of search engine indexes asking to be moved from the Bing-based engines section to the semi-independent engines section because they have their own indexes.

All returned zero organic link results for some time during the Bing outage.

Qwant has contacted others (not me) regarding claims of Bing-dependence whenever it became a hot topic, insisting that it mixes results from its own index with Bing (something usually against the Bing ToS unless you somehow manage to negotiate an exception, which rarely happens and has finer details covered by NDAs). Has anybody seen evidence of Qwant using its own index? It’s one of the engines whose organic results went completely dormant during the Bing outage.

If you want corporate email servers to reach your email address that isn’t one of the big dozen-or-so email providers, you need to post your email to social media or put it on your homepage and leave it there for a year. That’s why my main personal email receives messages when my aliases often don’t.

So to get outgoing-spam-filters to accept you, you must welcome spam.

I continue to work on my site over break. Today I got the build time down to 3.5 seconds for the Hugo build and just under 3 seconds for post-processing and syntax-checking (mostly using xmllint). I’m not parallelizing the post-processing since my laptop just has two cores (no simultaneous multithreading) and CI has one.

Seven seconds is still too slow for changes to feel instant, though. I can’t just rebuild on save. It’s especially slow for a site with only <200 pages.

Hugo’s profiler tells me that a lot of the time is spent searching for Webmentions that match the current page. Perhaps I should do that server-side ahead of time; right now, I download all my Webmentions as one big fat JSON file and load it into memory once. I should also move some post-processing back into Hugo.

I also re-used xmllint to minify my feeds and check their syntax. The minification worked particularly well since my feeds contain raw, un-escaped XHTML. Some clients still fetch my full-text feeds without transparent compression.
