We'll share some gourd/calabash myths for this !

Bottle gourds (Lagenaria siceraria) are used in many parts of Africa to create calabashes. Calabashes can be used as bowls, containers, and even for musical instruments (like the kora)! It should be no surprise then that calabashes appear in many myths & traditional religious practices across Africa.

Calabashes have an important role in Yoruba's earth creation myth. According to the myth, Oduduwa descended from heaven with a calabash full of soil (and a bird). Then, Oduduwa scattered the soil over the water and released the bird, who spread the soil with their paws. Wherever the soil was scattered, solid ground appeared! And so the Earth was created.

Another African myth where calabashes were holding something supremely important comes from the Akan people:
Ananse (also spelled Anansi) collected all of the wisdom of the world in a calabash because Ananse did not trust humans with this power. The world’s wisdom could not be contained in a calabash, however, and it kept spilling out. Ananse saw the futility of these attempts and released knowledge to be shared amongst all people.

Calabashes still play an important role in many traditional religious practices, like during the festivities that the Yoruba people in Nigeria have to offer thanks to Yemoja, the goddess of the Ogun River and mother of all other Yoruba gods. During this celebration, calabashes full of offerings are taken to the river and offered to the goddess.

TheWagaduChronicles,

@mythologymonday There are many more stories about calabashes, but you can read about the last one in this article: https://www.aljazeera.com/features/2020/12/6/dance-water-and-prayers-celebrating-the-goddess-yemoja

In the middle of a rainforest village stands a fish pond. It has a few fishes within, some plants floating around, and a person standing at the edge of the pond.
A lovely farm full of different and colourful crops. In the background, a shrine can be spotted.
A small thatched hut stands semi-open. Many weaving and dying elements stand around it: dying vats, racks to dry the textiles... The background is a grassy and rocky terrain.
