I haven’t been overly thrilled with the Washington Post since Sally Buzbee came in but this seems much, much worse.

They let go of quite a few good journalists and have kept on those who seem determined to ruin their reputation. This definitely isn’t going to help.

It’s not a good sign for the publication or for the state of U.S journalism at all.

The Washington Post hires new editors from conservatives news orgs:

@FaithinBones @TonyStark That's not true, at all. And that's an ironic comment from someone whose latest timeline entry is a boost of a Max Boot article from the Washington Post...

@ThisAccountKillsFascists@mastodon.social avatar

@TonyStark I quit the Times when they hired Bret Stephens - that was the last straw for me. Now I feel like it's time to quit the Post, too. The Guardian seems like the obvious place to go, except that the US and DC local coverage won't be as good. I don't know where to go for that...

@FaithinBones I guess the irony eluded me...

    @thepoliticalcat Uh, no? I haven't seen the Barbie movie but I want to - just haven't had the time. I love Greta Gerwig. Nothing about this offends me. You just got a pretty big fact wrong. I mean, I think Titanic broke $1B back in 1997.

    @thepoliticalcat See, if someone pointed out a mistake I had made in a toot, I'd probably just edit the toot and/or acknowledge the mistake. But I can see from this exchange you're very big on assuming people's motives and then dismissing them based on the portrait you've invented.

    “With nearly as many hospitalizations in January 2024 as in January 2023, it’s clear that #COVID19 is not growing milder and it’s not fading away. The real question, then, is not whether COVID is still a pandemic, but how much COVID illness and death are we willing to accept?”

    https://www.bu.edu/articles/2024/is-covid-19-still-a-pandemic/

    ThisAccountKillsFascists,
    @ThisAccountKillsFascists@mastodon.social avatar

    @augieray Wait, hold up. Levels of masking and quarantining are clearly down, but despite that peak hospitalizations were 25% lower this winter in the US than last winter. I'm sorry, but that sounds milder to me. There are other arguments to make for taking COVID seriously but I don't understand that statement by the professor.

    ThisAccountKillsFascists,
    @ThisAccountKillsFascists@mastodon.social avatar

    @augieray And, of course, peak deaths in the US are down even more from last winter - like 60%.

    We Are Falling Apart

    The Right is successfully exploiting fears over rising antisemitism for its reactionary crusade while the Israel-Hamas war is tearing the democratic popular front to pieces.

    Gonna say it again because it's important: negative sentiment about the economy isn't about macroeconomic numbers like employment rate or median wage; it's about the perception of precarity.

    The gigification of work, difficulty in finding and affording housing and health care, thrash between remote and mandatory in-office work, and frequent layoffs are making people feel less secure, even if their average purchasing power hasn't actually declined.

    ThisAccountKillsFascists,
    @ThisAccountKillsFascists@mastodon.social avatar

    @tess You keep trying to turn this into an issue of long-term, structural issues, but I don't see how that accounts for this survey data https://civiqs.com/results/economy_us_now?uncertainty=true&annotations=true&zoomIn=true&net=true

    To me, that screams political polarization (in perceptions of the economy), pandemic waves, and inflation.

    ThisAccountKillsFascists,
    @ThisAccountKillsFascists@mastodon.social avatar

    @tess Conversely, if you want to point to precarity as the explanation, you need to explain why it doesn't correlate with any economic sentiment over time - which isn't surprising, since it's been a baseline fact of the American economy for a long time. Elizabeth Warren was writing about medical bankruptcies for how long? Etc.

    ThisAccountKillsFascists,
    @ThisAccountKillsFascists@mastodon.social avatar

    @tess All these things can be true at once:
    A) Economic precarity is awful and is very high right now
    B) Income inequality is awful and is very high right now
    C) We would be much better off with strong unions
    D) Economic policy has taken us the wrong direction in many ways
    E) People are unhappy about the economy right now because of inflation.

    @lzg It's a good idea, but I actually think there is a reason why it doesn't work "the other way around."

    The right is practically policy free at this point. The differences between them are primarily tactical - a matter of how quickly and aggressively they want to move to keep power for themselves, take power from others, and own the libs.

    Because the goals are the same whether you are a (so-called) moderate conservative and a radical one, there's no reason for them to be in conflict.

    ThisAccountKillsFascists,
    @ThisAccountKillsFascists@mastodon.social avatar

    @lzg In contrast, policy very much matters to the left side of the spectrum, and the moderates definitely do not agree with the radicals. (And as someone else pointed out, there are a million flavors of radical leftists who don't agree with each other, either.) So conflict is inevitable there, even if strategically it would seem to be good that the radicals shift the Overton Window.

    ThisAccountKillsFascists,
    @ThisAccountKillsFascists@mastodon.social avatar

    @lzg But I think there's one further reason it can't work as well for the left. Because the right shares uniform goals, the radicals don't turn off independent voters that much more than the "moderates" do. E.g., if both radicals and "moderates" want to ban abortion, then there's not much cost to the radicals shifting the Overton Window in terms of the tactics and speed to get there.

    ThisAccountKillsFascists,
    @ThisAccountKillsFascists@mastodon.social avatar

    @lzg But since the moderate and radical left have such different policies, the radical left can potentially scare off independent voters. So the moderate left is going to want to disassociate itself from those policies that it thinks are unpopular to independents, even if that costs the moderate left the benefits of shifting the Overton Window.

    Rightwingers are promoting aggressive anti-bikeism as a key element of the reactionary political identity. Just the most destructive people, reflexively raging against anything coded “left” or “woke.” And so even the most universally beneficial trends and behavior are declared evil and “Un-American” 1/

    ThisAccountKillsFascists,
    @ThisAccountKillsFascists@mastodon.social avatar

    @tzimmer_history I think the common denominator is that thse are things where it feels like society is changing even though "everyone" opposes the changes. When society appears to be changing at the behest of the tiniest minority, they believe that someone must be pulling the strings.

    In my area, many bike lanes have been created. In my social sphere, they are almost universally opposed. Supposedly, cycling is very popular. But in my social sphere, I only know three people who ride.
