Out of interest, do we have stats on daily active users? (Preferably where “active” is defined by “makes at least one comment or post”.)

Zagorath,
@Zagorath@aussie.zone avatar

I mean, that wasn’t me, but…it’s completely true. I don’t know if the Wikipedia article sources that pronunciation, but it’s definitely true.

Zagorath,
@Zagorath@aussie.zone avatar

Why does the URL say south Brisbane and it’s in the South Brisbane category, but the article title and first line say North?

Zagorath,
@Zagorath@aussie.zone avatar

Parents are in town, so I’m hanging out with them a lot through the day.

Taking part in an Age of Empires comp this evening. The AoE2 Decathlon 4, a kind of fun jokey tourny.

Early tomorrow I’m headed to the Gold Coast to watch my dad doing a mature-aged bike race, which I’m really looking forward to. I just wish it were in Brisbane so I could use a photo of the race for next week’s Foto Friday!

OC Unlike previous attempts at trying reddit alternatives (like Voat), kbin and much of the lemmyverse doesn’t seem to be plagued with extreme far right buffoonery.

It’s one thing to have differing views, but I’ve seen enough attempted reddit migrations to be relieved that the popular communities in the fediverse so far haven’t been about crazy racist stuff or other extreme right bullshit....

@Zagorath@aussie.zone avatar

Sorry, but what comic are you referring to? Some other users also referenced panels of a comic, but I don’t see any comic—or any link other than to Wikipedia.

Has the user edited it out?

Zagorath,
@Zagorath@aussie.zone avatar

and that edit didn’t reach your instance

Annoyingly, I can’t view the post from its own instance because it seems like Kbin requires an account even to view?

Would love if someone has a Lemmy link to any instance other than mine so I can rule out that first possibility.

or Lemmy doesn’t like something about how Kbin does images

This is definitely very possible. I’ve already encountered cases where Kbin users weren’t able to interact with my images from Lemmy in quite the same way Lemmy users could.

It’s not toast unless it’s been toasted. That’s like…the definition of toast.

Zagorath,

It’s a multifaceted problem.

Scooters are definitely much more dangerous than bikes. They’re much harder to control and more likely to tip over. And that’s a problem.

And it seems highly likely that this guy was under the influence. Which is obviously a bad personal decision.

But also, there’s a severe problem with infrastructure. When you have actual good-quality infrastructure for bikes and scooters to use, crashes like this become much less likely. Yes, most of the conversation around bike infrastructure is about protecting them from cars, but quite a lot of what we’re building at the moment does a little to protect against cars while actually potentially increasing the risk of single-vehicle crashes or crashes between two active transport users. Still a worthwhile trade-off, but even better would be to build high quality, rather than mediocre, infrastructure.

In this case, the article says the guy “clipped a gutter”. When you have good bike path, there won’t be any gutters. At least not ones that you’re ever riding very close to. But then in this case it’s even worse. There wasn’t even a mediocre bike path. He was riding, presumably, on the footpath, with all of its bumps and cracks and lips. These things are uncomfortable and potentially risky on a bicycle, but are major hazards on the small wheels of a scooter.

This rider undoubtedly made some bad personal decisions leading up to the crash. But if our Council was doing its job properly and ensuring that there were high quality, reasonably direct, separated paths for people using active transport to get to any destination that they could desire, these mistakes would not have lead to his death.

Zagorath,
@Zagorath@aussie.zone avatar

I’m not convinced. I’ve seen plenty of people wearing full face helmets in their scooters just fine. They’re a little heavy and hot (which is why cyclists don’t wear them), but it’s absolutely not to the extent that it’s creating more danger than it prevents.

Zagorath,
@Zagorath@aussie.zone avatar

Melbourne is killing it. Damn lefties.

You mean those lefties in a city with just one federal Greens representative? 😉

I’m very sympathetic to this viewpoint. If anything, I actually think adblocking is worse than conventional piracy (though nowhere near as bad as actual theft), because with piracy you’re costing the creator nothing and getting their stuff for free. With adblocking you’re getting it free and costing them the fees for bandwidth. It’s a tiny fee on a per-user basis, but it’s real. Not as bad as actual theft though because you’re not depriving them of the ability to sell what they created to someone else.

My problem with YouTube in particular is that they’re just so damn shitty to the people that provide them value. Like Reddit, but not quite as extreme. For years YouTube has been slow to act to demonetise actual bad actors, while good actors constantly get caught up with bullshit abuses of their Content ID (with public domain content being detected, and fair use exemptions to use of copyrighted material being ignored). And more recently, with their demonetisation of marginalised creators simply for talking about their own lived experience.

I used to pay for YouTube Red back when it existed, happily. But for me the last straw came in 2018 when they started screwing over small-time creators by removing longstanding small creators from the partner programme as a lazy overreaction to a few not-longstanding bad actors.

These days, I watch as many creators as I can on Nebula, which I happily pay for, and would have happily paid for a lifetime membership of, if that offer had been available for just 1 week longer than it actually was, despite objectively the lifetime membership probably not being a good deal for the individual user. I’m happy to pay for a good experience, but not for a company that screws over its suppliers so badly.

Here’s my entry. Would have liked a longer exposure than this but it was just taken on my phone so no manual control.

Zagorath,
@Zagorath@aussie.zone avatar

It’s not a super serious thing, but that’s generally the idea. To get people out there taking photos every week so they’ve got something to share.

Especially for this first one I think we can be a little loose with that though.

Zagorath,
@Zagorath@aussie.zone avatar

PS: we don’t seem to be able to upload images into replies directly :(

Maybe it’s a Kbin UX issue? On Lemmy I can do it as shown in this screenshot.

https://aussie.zone/pictrs/image/f2734042-d97d-459b-bcb4-5abd59c04bcc.png

PS: could you please reply to this comment to confirm you’ve seen it? I’m concerned that if you can’t leave your own image, you might also be unable to see mine.

Also, just to test something, the syntax for inline images seems to be ![](image_url), so here’s an inline Imgur pic of Cr Andrew Wines being cute:

I’m not sure whether that counts as “Brisbane” or “this week”

Yeah the rules are pretty loose, but I think even the strictest interpretation of them would say this is fine. It’s after last Friday and it’s in the greater Brisbane region.

I love how the foremost bird has this intense-seeming look on its face!

Zagorath,
@Zagorath@aussie.zone avatar

Not necessarily. Some may not have entered it on this site, or may have plans for a migration but not yet decided where specifically to go.

I haven’t put my sub in there yet because of some Lemmy issues that make it a little harder to access until that instance’s admins upgrade to 0.18, and I don’t want people’s first experience to be a bad one.

Plastic Free July – Be Part of the Plastic Pollution Solution (www.plasticfreejuly.org)

This is a great time to learn more about how to reduce your personal plastic use. Many local councils are putting on events & workshops - mine has programs for schools, online forums and workshops on making re-useable produce bags, as well as ongoing workshops on compost and food waste reduction.

Zagorath,
@Zagorath@aussie.zone avatar

This is nice and all, and certainly individuals should try and reduce their plastic usage where they can. But this has very strong vibes of greenwashing. Realistically, the vast majority of plastic waste is caused by industrial use or by consumer goods where the consumer doesn’t have viable alternatives. I can’t stop fishing using plastic fishing nets. I can’t even make it so that the chocolate biscuits I want to buy, or the rice, come in a paper bag.

The onus here lies 99% on polluting businesses, not on individuals, and these sorts of events try to turn the blame back onto pErsoNAL rESpONSiBILitY in classic neoliberal fashion.

cheap to run

That’s actually precisely the problem with it. It’s not cheap. A report from almost a decade ago found that going all-in on renewables was more economical back then, and things have only gone more and more in favour of renewables in the time since. If we’d gone nuclear back in the ‘70s or even up until the early ‘00s it would have been good, but the ship has basically sailed on nuclear today, at least unless there are some major breakthroughs in technology.

PHB 2024 Playtest Drops Tomorrow - Overview (youtu.be)

Crawford says it’s the biggest yet, with 7 classes (Experts: Ranger, Rogue, Bard; Priests: Cleric, Paladin, and Druid; and Monk confirmed), spells and weapon mastery tweaks, capstones back at lvl20 (epic boons will be pushed to another UA), and subclass progression reverted to the 2014 cadence after lvl3. Notably, rogues are...

Zagorath,
@Zagorath@aussie.zone avatar

I honestly like that some choose their subclass at a different level. For the paladin especially it feels really appropriate.

Zagorath,
@Zagorath@aussie.zone avatar

Subclasses in 5e functionally replaced 3.5 prestige classes

Not really. They even tried prestige classes in 5e in an old Unearthed Arcana, and the homebrew community has taken that and turned out some good stuff with it. Unfortunately that particular UA didn’t review well, and WotC as usual threw the baby out with the bathwater and decided it meant that prestige classes are a dud of an idea entirely.

Prestige Classes in 5e could be more like (non-multiclass) Archetypes in Pathfinder 2e. They’re extra things that you tack on to your character to specialise in an unusual area that isn’t related to your core class’s competency. It’s about broadening what you can do, rather than deepening it in the way a lot of subclasses do.

That’s the same sort of thing that was said when smoking bans were introduced.

Sports will adapt. They’ll find other industries to sponsor them. There might be a period of uncertainty, but life will go on.

Edit: besides, I was particularly concentrating on the especially insidious type of gambling ad where they pretend it’s a natural part of the broadcast. There’s absolutely no justification for that kind of deceptive practice.

Zagorath,
@Zagorath@aussie.zone avatar

For me it wouldn’t even let me copy/paste a YouTube URL. Trying to do so kept automatically pasting in the title of the damn video. 😠
