Reading a 2016 paper on inquiry-based learning where "cognitive load" is once again used as a reason to stop any learner from doing anything FUN and HARD and EXPLORATORY my God

Being alive increases your cognitive load. We are not in some kind of robotic fry-out state every time we have to consume novel information. Working in a repetitive assembly line is low cognitive load and also destroys people

This one little tiny concept taken out of context is used for so many bad arguments.

@grimalkina I think my favourite bit of research in the category of “massively misinterpreted and overused” would be Miller’s “The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two”. Heard it used as justification on everything from team size (!) to the number of items on a menu (!!).

@grimalkina I owned sevenplusorminustwo.com for a few years with the intent of putting a bunch of “FFS this is what it actually means” content there — but never got around to it :)

    We have measured something researchers call beliefs about "role-based communal affordances" in my lab or in other words: how much do software developers think that the job of being a software developer includes helping other people and improving their lives? And the answer is A LOT of professional developers think this is important and see this as part of their identity.

    People's beliefs about the communal affordances of software work is an undermeasured, underappreciated important thing imo.

    @grimalkina This stuff is fascinating to me since I so often deal with breaking down stereotypes that folk in discipline X have about discipline Y in my coaching work.

    e.g. the stereotype that “all” engineers don’t care about that stuff effects how folk in research/product/c-suite treat the group, how they set incentives, how they recruit, etc. etc.

    adrianh,
    @adrianh@mastodon.social avatar

    @grimalkina <nods>

    And that frustration plays into the “management/whomever don’t trust us” stereotypes — which leads to a delightfully toxic little feedback cycle unless somebody digs in and actually gets all sides talking about values and objectives.

    2007: Watching "Project Runway" helps me develop role models for failure. When a contestant loses, do they take defeat with dignity? What attitudes are likely to help me bounce back after being rejected/fired/laid off?

    2009: I ponder: Tim Gunn is really good at phrasing criticism in a way that's likely to get across to the designer. I want to be that kind of manager.

    2024: Taskmaster's format gives me a different kind of failure to reflect on. Because one doesn't get fired right away... 1/n
