I have some exciting news to announce on Monday… But in the meantime, with this post I’m taking a brief pause from MJF pianos and I’m sharing this old recording of my husband Ally and me doing a very slooow version of Mamma Mia. If you listen carefully you’ll hear that we’re often not in time with each other - this is because we both had to keep dragging each other back to try and keep the tempo down!

I’ve been singing this song on and off since I was 14 years old and Alison Moyet had a hit with her cover of the Billie Holiday original. The piano accompaniment is super simple, but apparently the chords are a bit of a nightmare for guitarists.
Again it’s not very fancy, but I really like the instrumental break I wrote for the middle. This is another one for , performed on the @manchesterjazzfestiva @manjazzfest piano outside Aviva Studios.

I’m editing an auto-generated transcript for a podcast interview*, and apparently “Bohemian Rhapsody” = “Boomer Rap Street”. 😂

*Exciting news on that front coming hopefully very soon!

As before, the piano arrangement was put together by my son Oscar, my husband Ally and myself.

Summertime again! And dare I jinx the weather by saying it has felt a little like actual summertime recently? These are the original lyrics. And not a street piano this time - this was filmed at @Sale.Sings* cake night a couple of weeks ago. And ok, yeah, I’ve cheated a little and cut out all the mistakes I made in the first verse. 😀

Duetting with Manchester Central Library's ghosts!

If you listen carefully, you'll hear a ghostly cello accompanying me. Just the overtones of the instrument, but I like the idea of one of the ghosts of this historic building coming along for the ride.

My son Oscar came up with the idea of starting this with Für Elise, and my husband Ally came up with the lovely left hand. The rest is mostly me.

A @manchesterjazzfestival street piano, with lyrics written for MJF.

Yay, it’s that time of year again when the pianos come out! I wrote these lyrics especially for @manchesterjazzfestival’s piano trail (https://manchesterjazz.com/mjf2024-piano-trail/).
The piano arrangement was a collab between my son Oscar, my husband @AllyFogg and me.

I love how the still from this video makes it look like I'm about to sneeze!

This is me talking about continuous integration ahead of my talk, "Continuous integration - that's not what they meant", at #DevoxxUK this afternoon.

Do you want to learn how to help your colleagues brush up on their coding skills, or maybe give your own skills a boost?

tl;dr @emilybache and I are offering two series of four learning hours firstly on refactoring and then on TDD, with each one followed by a session briefing for those who want to discuss techniques further or talk about how they can deliver similar content for their own teams.

claresudbery,
@claresudbery@mastodon.social avatar

Often we're so busy meeting deadlines that we never find time to focus on our coding skills. And even when we do, we tend to focus on new technologies rather than the underlying bread-and-butter skills that allow us to write robust code in small steps with maximum feedback.

But practices like refactoring and test driven development make a huge difference. They allow us to approach coding tasks with confidence, and they're a great target for training budgets, at only 175 EUR per session.

claresudbery,
@claresudbery@mastodon.social avatar

The first set of four learning hours will focus on refactoring, and will be weekly on Tuesdays at 15:00 UTC/BST, starting Tue 21st May.

The second set will focus on TDD, and will be weekly on Thursdays at 15:00 UTC/BST, starting Thurs 27th June.
