“A publisher told me that his (successful) business operated on the rule of thumb that 80% of books were not read by the purchaser - they were either gifts or found their way onto glass tables or dusty bookshelves

…That's why we like to say a record collection defines who you are, and a book collection defines who you really want to be.”

VR Agent is an "attendant free" arcade game where the VR headset is fused to the lightgun, which descends from the top of the unit when you pay. The game isn't much to write home about, but the form factor is fascinating. https://adrianhon.substack.com/p/vr-agent

The Squid Game Immersive Gamebox experience fails to understand:

  1. Games designed for specific physical contexts require a lot of work to be fun elsewhere

  2. There’s a reason children’s games are for children, not adults

  3. The least interesting thing about Squid Game is the games https://adrianhon.substack.com/p/squid-game-immersive-gamebox

On paper, The Invincible is everything I want games to be – a sci-fi adventure based on Stanislaw Lem's 1964 novel on the nature of intelligence and humanity's quest to dominate the universe, with stunning "atompunk" art.

In practice, it just doesn’t work – but other games can only wish their failures were this daring. https://adrianhon.substack.com/p/the-invincible

Welp, just booked my hotel room for the worldcon in Glasgow next August. Non-refundable, so I guess I'm going to be there …

Apparently ZRX (aka Zombies, Run!) is App of the Day in Canada, if you have an iPhone and a moment I'd very much appreciate screenshots!

Amid the UK's annual refusal to return the Elgin Marbles and British harrumphing on "well actually we took care of them and Greece stole them blah blah", here's my fun sci-fi short story about aliens taking Stonehenge!

Loved this piece by Gita Jackson. I recently subtooted about the intro to the game essay collection in question, which trod the same old "games are important, they can make you cry!" stuff we've had for decades.

Final Fantasy IV introduced the iconic Active Time Battle system, but its greatest triumph is conjuring a story of loss, death, and grief, and what those feelings drive people to do.

This is a guest post by @bijan and it's a banger!

After almost 17 years, I'll be leaving Six to Start early next year.

I've had the privilege to work with incredibly talented and kind colleagues on important, award-winning games like Zombies, Run!, Marvel Move, We Tell Stories, The Walk, Smokescreen, The Code, and more.

Games are a hard business. We chose to make games that help people get fit and stay healthy – games that people wouldn't regret playing, games that we wouldn't regret making. And I think we achieved that.

Many other people are leaving Six to Start too, sadly, but many people are staying, and I wish them the very best.

In my remaining time I'll be working hard to make sure everything is handed over smoothly, because I still care a lot about every single ZR and Marvel Move player.

What's next for me? A long break!

I have plenty in store for my weekly newsletter, and I have ideas for books to write and games to make.

You can find out more about what I'm up to here: https://mssv.net/about/

I'm not planning to jump into a new job any time soon but if you'd like to talk about interesting projects such as:

  • VR & AR
  • Doing gamification well
  • Immersive entertainment
  • Writing about games and tech
  • Improving book publishing for tech & culture

hit me up! https://mssv.net/about/

I occasionally entertain the idea of writing a book about the past, present, and future of immersive entertainment, and this panorama of Versailles that people would pay to look at from 1818 at the Met is a reason why I think it’d be so interesting

I'm finishing up this round of edits on my book, and after that I want to catch up on some reading. What is an SFF novel or short story published this year that you loved?

🆕 blog! “Book Review: Reality Is Broken - Why Games Make Us Better and How They Can Change the World by Jane McGonigal”
★★★⯪☆

I have never felt less like a human being than while reading this book. I don't mind video-games, I find them mildly diverting. I've never gotten in to massively multiplayer online game…

@Edent @bencurthoys yep I think it’s a bad book and misunderstands what games are and what their appeal is. I go into quite a bit of detail into gamification in my book.
