HOUSE by Tracy Kidder is a masterpiece, perhaps even better than his previous book, The Soul of a New Machine.

It's not just about the literal nuts and bolts of building a house, or even about the negotiations and compromises between the client, architect and builders – it's a deeply humanistic story about what we value in our work and our lives.

Ultimately HOUSE is about the age old question of how to balance art and commerce, and the thousand little decisions and actions that go into it - which type of wood to select for a panel, how it takes a builder to find the best pieces, how much that costs them, how they can’t help but do a good job even at their own expense - and so many more besides.

I have basically zero interest in DIY and building but as someone who writes books and makes games, I loved this.

I still contend that Bluesky is like a beta version of twitter that’s also missing tons of features that mastodon already has, but so many good writers post there that I read it, but don’t post much.

edit: (bluesky invites all gone, so removed the screenshot of them)

@mathowie the app UI is pretty tough and the notifications tab never seems to update properly. Good posters though, and custom feeds are fun!

He’s back at it again (suggesting Metafilter should migrate to Discourse forum software)

@garius I haven't used it for rapid fire chat, but it does happen on our forum and seems to work well (e.g. you can see when someone else is typing).

The devs seem to be prioritising chat-like features, so it's worth investigating!

The problem with “videogames aren't bad" pieces is that they go so far to the opposite side of the argument that they essentially refuse to acknowledge any negative effects whatsoever.

I’m sure the author would disagree, but he talks about how to "maximise the benefits and minimise the potential harms of digital play." (emphasis added).

This doesn't serve anyone and IMO, game academics' blinkered enthusiasm is being exploited by an unscrupulous, greedy industry.

Games have won! Everyone plays games now, right? They're bigger than movies and TV and the music industry, right?

What is the deal with pretending they're some oppressed creative outlet rather than the absolute cultural and financial juggernaut they are?

adrianhon,
@adrianhon@mastodon.social avatar

It's such a weird piece. OK, so some people still think games cause violence. And? Exactly how is that affected the creation and distribution of games? It's not like violent games are being banned – indeed, it's pretty easy for kids to play them.

So then we have to do research into games so we know what "policymaking and potential industry interventions" to make. Why would we need to make any interventions if games are so amazing?

My grand unified theory of punditry is that many (most?) have a few good ideas at first, but as attention grows they need to keep publishing more stuff to feed the beast, so they venture into areas they have no idea about and quality control goes down.

Finally, they say something dumb and instead of reassessing, they double-down and are drawn into the Rogansphere.

No time to read my 12,000 word piece about the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser hotel?

Try my 800 word writeup for The Guardian! That's my secret, Cap – I'm always writing.

Top reactions to my Galactic Starcruiser piece:

  1. I've never even heard of this! 🤯
  2. I thought it was just a hotel! 😮
  3. This sounds amazing, I really want to go and now it's closing 🙁

And these are from highly-online tech/game industry people!

@Edent @frankieroberto As in, he had a reader on his body that could detect my RFID bracelet at a distance and feed my name into an earpiece? I don’t think so - even if that were reliable there were often a lot of people around. I think it’s a combo of being fed lines and just remembering people’s names.

One advantage of a 3 day thing is that even if you have moments of FOMO you end up doing so much it all balances out!

adrianhon,
@adrianhon@mastodon.social avatar

@Edent thank you! Yes, they are pretty un magical…

adrianhon,
@adrianhon@mastodon.social avatar

@mhoye @Edent Yes, there is active RFID, I read they use them for traffic management etc. I would be very curious to hear info about this millimetre-level precision, seems extraordinarily high. Their use seemed quite basic in the Starcruiser however.

adrianhon,
@adrianhon@mastodon.social avatar

@Edent Always wanted to try this! Sounds very busy. Can’t argue with that price though!

@Edent @mhoye I remember Bluetooth location being pretty flaky but that was quite some time ago. I can imagine MIMO would be a huge improvement. Clearly ultrawideband is great today, too.

Feels like Disney used the "throw (smart) humans at the problem" solution for the Starcruiser, which makes sense given they weren't going massive scale.

The Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser hotel is the future of entertainment, but we weren't prepared for it.

I visited the Starcruiser on one of its final voyages. If you're interested in game design, immersive entertainment, ARGs, RPGs, or LARPs, this 12,000-word deep dive is for you.
