Any suggestions for cheap but decent laptops for coding?

I’m currently learning how to code (currently Python, then maybe JavaScript), but I’m not always around my desktop, and learning on my phone is not always an option (also, it can be quite cumbersome at times). Therefore, I’m looking into purchasing a laptop just for learning how to code and stuff....

agelord,

I recommend looking for refurbished laptops. As they’d give you better bang for buck. If you do indeed to with refurbished laptop, check everything thoroughly before buying including how long the battery lasts and if the display has any deffects.

agelord,

For media consumption, internet browsing etc, Linux is more than ready to replace Windows. However, problems do arise in exotic hardware combinations, but these days, this is the exception rather than the norm.

Side of bed debate - Which side is left?

Which side of the bed is the left side? Is the answer based on the perspective of laying in the bed (person’s head at the head end)? Is the answer based on viewing it from the foot of the bed, looking at the head of the bed? Is there an “anatomical position” or special terminology like in boating for this?...

agelord,

Forget left-right. Use port and starboard.

Why do people throw out old motors, bicycles, anything metal into rivers and lakes instead of a junk yard or the trash system?

I have been watching magnet fishing and people love to toss stuff over bridges without a second thought on the environmental impact. Hiding evidence I can almost understand but not lawnmowers, car batteries, etc....

agelord,

Is this a USA thing? No one does this in my country. WTF

ChatGPT Answers Programming Questions Incorrectly 52% of the Time: Study (gizmodo.com)

The research from Purdue University, first spotted by news outlet Futurism, was presented earlier this month at the Computer-Human Interaction Conference in Hawaii and looked at 517 programming questions on Stack Overflow that were then fed to ChatGPT....

agelord,

In my experience, if you have the necessary skills to point it at the right direction, you don’t need to use it at the first place

agelord,

Bruh, where in my comment did I tell people not to use it?

agelord,

Bad reading comprehension is bad.

agelord,

As far as my understanding goes, Zed uses the GPU only for rendering things on screen. And from what I’ve heard, most editors do that. I don’t understand why Zed uses that as a key marketing point

agelord, (edited )

I want more entities to switch to Linux like that, but that’s unlikely in the near future. Most offices have Windows professional or enterprise (LTSC) which don’t have most of the bullshit regular Windows has.

agelord,

Their “Onboard memory manager” software for their mouses is actually pretty good. It’s only 10MB in size and doesn’t require any installation. The only downside is that I had to “enable” the onboard memory of my mouse by first installing their usual crap software.

agelord,

Yes. And I think some high end mouses can store multiple preset settings in memory to switch on the fly without requiring any software. Moreover, there are some scenarios in which you can’t install any software, in an office-issued computer or in a eSports tournament computer.

Annoyingly similar buttons with very different functions (lemmy.world)

One of the buttons laps the stopwatch, the other resets the entire session clearing all lap markers and stopping the counter. Better not forget which is which, especially given that you’re probably timing something in the physical world not paying much attention to your phone…

agelord,

The placement of the numbers and their relative size are ugly too. I understand why the sizes are different, but it looks ugly nonetheless.

agelord,

Should be posted in midly infuriating.

agelord,

Nah, m8, desktop and ChromeOS, these two words don’t go in the same sentence together

agelord,

The “fix” would be to not allow themes to execute code in the first place.

agelord,

My guy, any amount of school shooting is more common than they should be.

agelord,

Could you please clarify why the baseline needs to be at 0? I’m genuinely curious.

agelord,

How do you know a Windows user?

Don’t worry, they’ll bitch and moan about all the different ways Windows sucks.

At what age do you think is too old to be living with parents?

Background+rant: I’m in my early to mid-20s and still living at home with my dad. I’m not a NEET and am employed at a normal office job. I enjoy the comfort of my home. I like being with family (and I believe they feel blessed to have their kid at home longer). I like not having to pay rent. However, I also keep feeling some...

agelord,

Game emulation communities should be larger.
