I just published my new book, "Bavarian Brewing in the 19th Century: A Reference Guide". It is available on Amazon worldwide, both as paperback and Kindle e-book.
Please note that this is properly nerdy beer stuff.

In a bit of a change of tone, here's me lamenting about my recent frustrations about liquid yeast and what consequences I'm drawing from it. https://dafteejit.com/2024/03/liquid-yeast-why-do-i-even-bother/

To recap the , it was just so much fun. And not just the beer drinking (which really was partying in orderly chaos, German style), but also all the rides. I particularly enjoyed the old rides and attractions. Rotor was hilarious to ride (it's basically a spinning centrifuge where they then pull away the floor and you're then stuck to the wall), while watching Teufelsrad was great entertainment: you basically get onto a spinning platform and try to stay on as long as possible.

The metric cup of 250ml (as used in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada) implies the existence of a metric pint of 500ml and a metric gallon of 4 liters, and all the other units derived from the gallon.

I won‘t make it on any "40 under 40" in my lifetime anymore, and I can’t invite everybody to my birthday party today, so to celebrate and share the joy of me getting officially old, I decided to make my Vienna Lager e-Book available for free on Amazon. Get it here, only for a limited time (i.e. today): https://www.amazon.com/Vienna-Lager-Andreas-Krennmair-ebook/dp/B08CMH6L9H/

Tapped this home-brewed yesterday afternoon. It's a Wiess, basically an unfiltered Kölsch-style beer, brewed from Maris Otter pale malt, 10% pale wheat malt, and 2% CaraPils malt. Hopped with Tradition (bittering) and Tettnanger (aroma, including whirlpool addition), fermented at 20°C with Lallemand Köln yeast, then cold-conditioned and packaged. Medium bitterness, lemony-herby aromas in the nose, incredibly drinkable, a perfect party beer.

A 10 liter party keg with a plastic tap attached to it, placed next to a sink. On top of the fitting, a screwing contraption is placed to open it to allow air to get in so that beer can be poured from the party keg. Next to the keg, there's a metal tap lying which did not fit the tap hole.

Last night, I sampled all the Oktoberfestbiere of this year at a friend‘s (all from bottle). This is my personal ranking:

  1. Augustiner
  2. Hofbräuhaus
  3. Löwenbräu
  4. Paulaner
  5. Hacker-Pschorr
  6. Spaten

We also tried Giesinger Festbier, which is technically not an Oktoberfestbier, and I‘d rank it between 2 and 3.

Every time a new LLM "AI" is released, I'm testing it by asking it a few questions about Vienna Lager. So, Meta's Llama2 thinks Hofbräu, Augustiner, Hacker-Pschorr, Paulaner, Schultheiss, Veltins, Erdinger, and others all brew and sell a Vienna Lager. What is even the point if they just hallucinate "facts" out of thin air?

Lallemand seem to be really pushing on the front of low/non-alcoholic beer. Their latest newsletter talks about their new LoNa yeast strain, flavour compounds in NA beer, sensory analysis and even homebrewing (they won't sell LoNa to homebrewers 😐).

We did the brewery tour at Hofbräuhaus Traunstein today. Probably the best one we ever did, we got to see all the equipment (except packaging), including the open fermenters and the horizontal lagering tanks, and even had some great samples of beer afterwards.

Lallemand announced a yeast strain earlier today specifically for brewing NA/low ABV beer. It's a Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain specifically selected to not ferment maltose or maltotriose, with an attenuation of 16 to 20%. They really seem to have thought about the issues of brewing NA beer, and address several one of them, especially around flavour, in their sales presentation: https://www.lallemandbrewing.com/en/continental-europe/lona/

We're on a day trip to Rosenheim, visiting the Herbstfest Rosenheim, drinking Flötzinger Wies'n-Märzen. I'm not saying this lightly, but this is probably the only Festbier I've had that is as good as Augustiner's.

VLB Sommerfest was yesterday, and I took part in a small tour of their research brewery. Very interesting to see, they work at a fairly small scale, with 3 brew systems with capacities of 5hl, 2hl and 5 liters (sic!) each. The 5hl system consists of two mash tuns (one heated, can be used for adjunct cooking), one lauter tun, one kettle and one whirlpool, and is designed to emulate as many different brew systems of commercial breweries at a smaller scale.

  4. Brauerei zur Sonne Zunfttrunk 8.2 liters

Soo... I'm currently proof-reading the script for my next book, and I noticed that I made lots of mistakes in the sections that I wrote after my first COVID infection, compared to the sections that I wrote before the infection. I'm talking about mixing up words that look similar, completely leaving out parts of sentences, or even just writing garbled sentences that make no sense whatsoever.

If you're interested in the breweries of 19th century Bamberg, I have good news: I updated my map from July to not only list all 1818 breweries, but also the ones that were around in 1876. During the research for it, I stumbled upon a small mystery involving Keesmann and Mahrs.
