Marston's brewery retired their Burton Union systems in early 2024. It was announced yesterday that one of their Burton Union sets was handed over to Thornbridge brewery where it will be used to brew historic beers: https://www.beerguild.co.uk/news/carlsberg-marstons-brewing-company-and-thornbridge-brewery-find-a-new-home-for-burton-union-sets/

In a bit of a change of tone, here's me lamenting about my recent frustrations about liquid yeast and what consequences I'm drawing from it. https://dafteejit.com/2024/03/liquid-yeast-why-do-i-even-bother/

My setup to make dark invert sugar because tomorrow is brew day. This is for an Old Ale that is vaguely inspired by Gale's Prize Old Ale (see here for a homebrew clone recipe: https://byo.com/recipe/gales-prize-old-ale-clone/ ), except I'm leaving out the torrified wheat, use all Target hops, and inoculate with Gueuze dregs.

I have an announcement to make: on March 9, 2024, I'll be talking (in German) about Vienna Lager and its history at the Heimbrau Convention at Schloss Romrod.

If you're interested in the breweries of 19th century Bamberg, I have good news: I updated my map from July to not only list all 1818 breweries, but also the ones that were around in 1876. During the research for it, I stumbled upon a small mystery involving Keesmann and Mahrs.

Everything old is new again: low-alcohol "temperance" beers seemed to have been fairly popular in Denmark in the early 20th century. They were also tax-free.

  4. Brauerei zur Sonne Zunfttrunk 8.2 liters

I won‘t make it on any "40 under 40" in my lifetime anymore, and I can’t invite everybody to my birthday party today, so to celebrate and share the joy of me getting officially old, I decided to make my Vienna Lager e-Book available for free on Amazon. Get it here, only for a limited time (i.e. today): https://www.amazon.com/Vienna-Lager-Andreas-Krennmair-ebook/dp/B08CMH6L9H/

I looked a little bit at the official results from last Sunday's parliamentary election in (https://wybory.gov.pl/sejmsenat2023/en/sejm/wynik/pl), and while the official website isn't great in terms of visualization, the data was still quite interesting when I took a look. As with many other countries, there seems to be a stark city-countryside divide in politics. At the same time, and I found that noteworthy, there also seems to be a certain East-West divide.

Lallemand seem to be really pushing on the front of low/non-alcoholic beer. Their latest newsletter talks about their new LoNa yeast strain, flavour compounds in NA beer, sensory analysis and even homebrewing (they won't sell LoNa to homebrewers 😐).

Friday: Oktoberfest in Munich.
Today: half pints of cask ale in Berlin.

To recap the , it was just so much fun. And not just the beer drinking (which really was partying in orderly chaos, German style), but also all the rides. I particularly enjoyed the old rides and attractions. Rotor was hilarious to ride (it's basically a spinning centrifuge where they then pull away the floor and you're then stuck to the wall), while watching Teufelsrad was great entertainment: you basically get onto a spinning platform and try to stay on as long as possible.

The best time at must have been around 1897, when you could drink Märzenbier and Wiener Kaiserbock from Anton Dreher's brewery in Kleinschwechat near Vienna.

Yes, literally served at Oktoberfest!

The Iron-Maiden-ization of British real ale culture. If somebody didn't know about Iron Maiden or their mascot "Eddie", wouldn't they be put off by the cover of a book that is supposed to be about good beer and pubs?

Last night, I sampled all the Oktoberfestbiere of this year at a friend‘s (all from bottle). This is my personal ranking:

  1. Augustiner
  2. Hofbräuhaus
  3. Löwenbräu
  4. Paulaner
  5. Hacker-Pschorr
  6. Spaten

We also tried Giesinger Festbier, which is technically not an Oktoberfestbier, and I‘d rank it between 2 and 3.

We're on a day trip to Rosenheim, visiting the Herbstfest Rosenheim, drinking Flötzinger Wies'n-Märzen. I'm not saying this lightly, but this is probably the only Festbier I've had that is as good as Augustiner's.
