In a world with many “smart” devices, we need better tools to let us be in control of them.

@raynez and team built one such tool that enables, say, parents, to create ✨immersive stories ✨ that leverage smart speakers, lights, thermostats, fans, and other digitally connected devices, in addition to traditional pixels on a screen.

Check out Lei's presentation on the future of storytelling and #augmentedreality at #chi2024 today at 2pm in room 306 (in 30 min!)

March 2025: first cow-to-human transmission of new bird flu in a factory farm worker infected by cows. Biden lost the 2024 election due to low turnout and fraud in some key states. Dems’ accusations of fraud were laughed at by Republicans, who are now defending the sanctity of the electoral system. Protests during Trump's inauguration turned violent, so DC declared martial law to “prevent another Jan 6.” Natl Guard sent to close universities to install “law and order” after months of protests.

Woah! Someone posted the 1 billionth Scratch project online:
https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/1000000000

The Scratch online community has come a long way since it started as a master's thesis project!

Here is one of the first mock-ups of the website I did around 2005, inspired Flickr and some other "web 2.0" websites of that era

Last Fall, a few of us attended a CRA workshop in DC to discuss the future of research on social tech. Here is a report about it that includes topics ranging from governance to decentralization to the role of academia, and more https://cra.org/ccc/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2023/04/CCC-Future-of-Research-Workshop-Report_Final.pdf

Check it out!

The eclipse was amazing. It reminded me of skydiving: a lot of preparation for a few minutes of awe. Totally worth the 4 hours stuck in traffic in Arkansas.

The main tip I learned online is to not waste time trying to take a good picture during totality. So I just took this one photo which shows some stars. But it’s one of those things that there are millions of better photos, so just enjoy the four minutes!

I just enabled sharing to the fediverse on my Threads account.

I might regret saying this but I think this is a net gain for the fediverse, even if Meta is doing this to potentially appease regulators.

I’ll continue to use the Mastodon instances I helped start (hci.social and micro.blogs.pricneton.edu) but it’s nice to follow Threads folks from afar👋

The irony of blockchains is that they might ultimately be most helpful for central banks to exchange data and have more resilient data storage.

I’m personally excited to see BlueSky and Threads interface with Mastodon. Decentralization in all its forms has gotten me excited about social media again. I welcome interoperability. Not everything has to lead to an “embrace extend extinguish” situation.

I'm generally on the side of accepting any reasonable-sounding LBW poster to

But a lot of CHI LBW submissions I reviewed are "How can LLMs be used for <insert random topic>." This might make for a boring poster session.

Get ready for a room full of posters about LLMs in search of a problem!

I think I might have started a silly trend of using emojis in Google Scholar profiles to identify best paper awards and such. I'm glad to see more folks doing that. Google Scholar is so dry! ✨

We're looking for suggestions for creative subdomains for a Mastodon server at a university.

The main constraint is that the university doesn’t want to let us use a third-level domain like foo.princeton.edu, but they might be okay with foo.bar.princeton.edu.

What would be a good foo.bar subdomain?

Some ideas:
fedi.verse.princeton.edu
activity.pub.princeton.edu

Any other ones?

P.S. Using mastodon in the domain might not be a good long-term idea because the software might change.

Matia is one of our favorite restaurants, and it was just nominated for a James Beard award. It was also one of the 20 NYT best restaurants in 2022.

If you're ever in the Pacific Northwest, check out Matia, worth going to a remote island for it: https://www.matiakitchen.com/

I'm trying to switch from Chrome to Firefox on MacOS, but Firefox feels sluggish. Kinda surprising, given the M1 chip. Anyone else experienced this?
