I spent too long this morning trying to figure out why my internet was down, only to find out that it wasn't. My macbook just decided it didn't want to talk to my wireless router anymore. And then it just refused to accept the password I've been using for my wifi for ages -- even though my other computer can log on with that password just fine.

arcadeshopper,
@arcadeshopper@mastodon.social avatar

@MLE_online you need to remove the wireless network and put it back in again. Something is corrupt windows does this too. Actually

arcadeshopper,
@arcadeshopper@mastodon.social avatar

@MLE_online might have to reset your entire network settings then.. https://cleanmymac.com/faq/reset-network-settings-mac

Renaissance faire actors should spice up eclipse days by unexpectedly showing up at viewing parties in full medieval garb at the height of the darkness, screaming about how god has forsaken mankind and tearing at their tunics

arcadeshopper,

@MLE_online if you could just coordinate the eclipse to happen on faire days.. this would be granted I'm sure..

Here in LA there's a controversial proposal to build an aerial gondola up the hill to Chavez Ravine where Dodgers stadium is.

The regional transportation board is proposing that in exchange for allowing the construction of the gondola, any housing built over the parking lots at the stadium must be 25 percent affordable housing.

Okay, yes, extorting affordable housing out of wealthy business interests is good, but who the hell is going to want to live on top of an isolated hill with a busy and noisy baseball stadium that's too expensive to attend for people who need affordable housing?

arcadeshopper,
@arcadeshopper@mastodon.social avatar

@MLE_online that and the stadium traffic will kill leaving or going home at times. I lived next to a University stadium for a while.. games and concerts meant I wasn't driving anywhere

Do I know anyone on here who has experience adapting a rotary phone to work over modern VOIP?

I know I will need both an adapter from rotary to touch tone and then a VOIP adapter, but there seems to be a variety of options and I can't tell what's good and what's lousy.

arcadeshopper,
@arcadeshopper@mastodon.social avatar

@MLE_online there's two things to consider. first is the ATA as other's have pointed out, some support pulse internally others require a second device to convert to DTMF. The second thing is does your VOIP work with a modem. Vonage will probably not work faster than 300 baud, and unreliably at that. It's best to use a carrier that others have used. I do modem reliably up to 33.6k on my Xfiniity voip line.. for instance

arcadeshopper,
@arcadeshopper@mastodon.social avatar

@MLE_online the codecs used on the VOIP make a difference. the cheapo ones don't support the modem capable codecs. vonage, magicjack etc..

arcadeshopper,
@arcadeshopper@mastodon.social avatar

@MLE_online some cheep carriers or company's don't work with modem

arcadeshopper,
@arcadeshopper@mastodon.social avatar

@MLE_online I guess you're missing the point which is pick a company that can handle modem codecs. Like I said, Xfinity seems to do okay. I had a fiber provider before that had two different kinds of voip. One worked great with the modem and the other did not. There's a number of providers that will connect up to an ATA device for you that will handle the codecs but there's configuration that has to be done on your end with those. I used to use 8x8 back in the day

arcadeshopper,
@arcadeshopper@mastodon.social avatar

@MLE_online that's quitter talk :) anyway if they have a voip line they can always try it.. worst case it won't work well or at all. Best to start at the lowest baud rate (usually 300) and see how it goes.. they can dial my bbs to test

For those of you that don't know I've run a BBS since 1983 or so.. https://thekeep.net or telnet to thekeep.net port 23.. I also have a modem at 503 852-3170 - I have a second BBS running on a TI-99/4A at thekeep.net port 9918

So I think got my #AppleLisaClone online as well! It's currently running SubText #BBS on MacWorks/ System 6.0.8 with 2MB of memory over a PPP connection!

Ok so it worked for about 30 minutes, the BBS was packed, all nodes busy! There was a multi user chat!

Then it just stopped responding. Oh well! I'll try again soon. =)

Question for Mastodon: I have a bunch of CP/M 5.25 floppy disks that I want to "liberate" a bunch of Z80 code I did as a kid (the world needs to see my Space Invaders clone). Any ideas of a simple/easy to get read them? My CP/M machine is long gone. Tracking down old CP/M machines is outside the scope of easy.

@grumpygamer I have lots of cpm machines and also a greaseweasle setup here to image the disks if needed lmk

Well, I just placed orders for boards and parts to build a new Lisa 2/5 around my existing Lisa CPU card, the only part of a Lisa I’ve ever owned.

I would never have thought this was possible if it weren’t for the work of @DosFox who recently built the first new Lisa since 1986! Thanks for the inspiration!

I’ll continue this thread as parts roll in. I may ask (beg) if folks have some parts in your bins! 😀

Finally have 3 displays set up for working from home. I have these vague memories, as if from some previous life, of using a computer productively with only a single display. How... how did we ever do that?

arcadeshopper,
@arcadeshopper@mastodon.social avatar

@48kRAM I moved to a 40-in 4K display so yes it's a single display but most of the time I spend it in quadrants that are about the same as the 1080p screen. So I can have four windows useful pretty much the same time without any seams or frames or anything else
