Finally found some time to work on my #AppleLisaClone – the clone CPU board seems to work in my original 2/10. However, the Lisa complains about I/O error 51 (parallel ports VIA) or I/O error 1 (undef'd) or hangs with the hourglass cursor. With the clone CPU, I cannot power down using the power button, this works with the original CPU. The floppy needs fixing and my clone parport board seems to have a problem (static on screen when it's inserted, see video) – lots of work ahead! #retrocomputing

We're Zoning out! We've now got three different sites connected via Apple Internet Router!

Tried running Apple Internet Router on the but with only 2MB of memory, it’s too much to ask.

It’s a shame, I think it might actually work, bridging EtherTalk (via BlueSCSI V2 WiFi), IP tunneling, and LocalTalk. I couldn’t thin the system down any further (that I can see).

I received a number of COP404LSN chips for my #AppleLisaClone today. Does anyone know what the difference to the COP404LSN-5 is which is mentioned on Patrick Schäfer's COP webpage (http://john.ccac.rwth-aachen.de:8000/patrick/COPSreader.htm)?

Wondering if anyone still uses BBS's like Syncronet and Fidonet anymore? I was thinking about setting up a BBS using Remote Access as its my favorite.

I would use Telnet of course

Thoughts?

@queennikki1972 Yes! There are many BBSs online, either via telnet or dialup. Some support FidoNet. I briefly ran one on my #AppleLisaClone! You can find a guide here:

This picture in a CHM article about the #apple #lisa shows Al Kossow @bitsavers and what looks like a Lisa card cage. However, the board in the picture looks unlike every Lisa board I've seen. There's a 64-pin DIL chip (68000?) and a piggyback board on the left with a 40-pin DIL chip, an EPROM, and a 20-pin DIL chip. If this board is in the correct location, it should be an I/O board. So – what is it? Al, can you help, please? 🙂

DIL test clips are hard to find... I got lucky and even was able to get a 64 pin clip for the Lisa's 68000 CPU

To all #AppleLisaClone builders out there (there are three systems out there at the moment if I'm not mistaken? 🙂) – did you manage to find all 74-series logic chips of the original logic family (LS, S, F, ALS, C, ...) used in the Lisa or did you replace some of them with other logic families? Over here, some chips are pretty difficult to find, e.g. the 74S109 on the CPU board or the 74C174 on the I/O board...

An #applelisaclone update:

  • still working on properly triggering the reset line on cold boot, but manually soft resetting works fine
  • still some RAM inconsistency with 1MB so went back to 512K. It could be the slower 74LS20 instead of 74ALS20 as suggested by @paulrickards
  • most significantly, I now have the ArduinoFile working - you may remember, I messed up the gender of the parallel port. Turns out the gender changer adapter flips the pins for some reason so I had to manually wire it up

Welcome to 2024, Apple Lisa!

After a brief interlude actually using the #applelisaclone, I'm back working on the issues punchlist. I really want to get the keyboard running, and I'm struggling to understand how it actually works.

(I'm pretty sure my issue is not the pull down resistor. I experimented with a bunch of values both below and above 3.3K and the results are exactly the same).

mejs,
@mejs@mastodon.vladovince.com avatar

So tonight I did more work on the #applelisaclone keyboard and I noticed two things:

  • connecting the oscilloscope's probe to the keyboard line (ie. placing a tiny load) actually gets a couple more keys working properly
  • I also tried taking out RP2 resistor pack completely, and got almost all the keys working, but in later attempts the keyboard wouldn't be detected so it isn't replicable
mejs,
@mejs@mastodon.vladovince.com avatar

I'm definitely close to resolving the #applelisaclone keyboard problem.

If I remove both the RP2 resistor pack (pulling KB line up) and the 3.3K resistor pulling it down, the keyboard will actually work just fine!

But here's the weird thing. If I check the resistance of the KB line to ground, it shows up as 2.64K. suggesting that me adding the 3.3K resistor isn't doing anything since there's already a connection to ground, somewhere 🤔

Does Macworks Plus have minimum memory requirements? I still only have 512K on my Lisa, and any version of Macworks Plus 1 can boot into the install disk, but after the HD is formatted and it starts installing it almost immediately reboots and the install on the HD just goes into a reboot loop.

Edit: so I guess 1MB is a hard requirement

#applelisaclone

mejs,
@mejs@mastodon.vladovince.com avatar

So the issue here is that my 2MB card is still unstable, but I did manage to install Macworks Plus 1.1h with System 6.0.3

I did this by putting in 1MB and working through a couple of crashes.

It technically can boot with only 512K but only barely so.

#applelisaclone

mejs,
@mejs@mastodon.vladovince.com avatar

The primary reason why I wanted to run it was to test LocalTalk.

I copied a version of AppleShare system extension from 6.0.3 install disk, but even though I seem to be able to activate AppleTalk, I get this error message when trying to select AppleShare.

#applelisaclone

mejs,
@mejs@mastodon.vladovince.com avatar

So friends, especially @DosFox and @paulrickards, thank you for your patience and helpful tips while I worked on troubleshooting the #applelisaclone 2MB memory board.

In the end it was a very silly mistake. 330ohm resistors in R1 and R2. I should have known better because I did get a corrected parts list from @paulrickards, but alas.

2MB works flawlessly now!

Closeup of 2 resistors on a green board

mejs,
@mejs@mastodon.vladovince.com avatar

So here's the current #applelisaclone punch list:

  • still have keyboard issues that can be resolved partially by removing both the pull up transistor pack and pull down resistor
  • power on reset doesn't seem to work for 6504A, causing IO Board error 57. Manually hitting reset at boot is a fix
  • I haven't been able to get LocalTalk working. I think I made the right adapter, connecting the DB-25 port like:

Pin 2 = TXD-
Pin 3 = RXD-
Pin 19 = RXD+
Pin 20 = TXD +
Pin 1/7 = GND

mejs,
@mejs@mastodon.vladovince.com avatar

So, this is interesting. LocalTalk actually works with a point to point to another LT device, but not with my AsanteTalk (nor did it work with TashTalk either).

Edit: TashTalk works actually!

#applelisaclone

mejs,
@mejs@mastodon.vladovince.com avatar

That was incorrect: TashTalk + TashRouter work with the #applelisaclone!

That means that my Apple Lisa, otherwise known as a bunch of newly assembled cards, has belatedly joined #GlobalTalk!

Well, I just placed orders for boards and parts to build a new Lisa 2/5 around my existing Lisa CPU card, the only part of a Lisa I’ve ever owned.

I would never have thought this was possible if it weren’t for the work of @DosFox who recently built the first new Lisa since 1986! Thanks for the inspiration!

I’ll continue this thread as parts roll in. I may ask (beg) if folks have some parts in your bins! 😀
