I decided to put together a timeline to try to keep things at least somewhat consistent in my game.

In the official materials they actually use BC for Barovian Calendar, but I decided that's might be a little confusing for players since we use that in real life so I changed it to BA.

And yes The Fellowship of the Raven is the adventuring party that my Ireena originates from.

I really hate it when I see memes of someone holding a box of puppies or kittens or whatever and they're like "Hey look my box of antidepressants arrived!"

Yeah that's nice but that attitude is what kept me unmedicated for the first 26 years of my life and it turns out I really needed actual medicine.

I feel like it's only a few steps from cute memes to "you don't need medication, just drink this homeopathic nonsense!"

First chapter of this is up, misspellings and all.

I have to admit my surprise that this is so far the only story up on Archive of Our Own about these two considering how popular the Sherlock series with Benedict Cumberbatch is.

But a couple things might be at play here, one of which is that the Ravenloft fandom is comparably smaller.

It does not, however, escape my notice that Arthur Sedgewick is canonically a black man as of 5e. And I had enough experiences with SuperWhoLock during the Bad Old Days to make some assumptions.

Put up the second chapter now, which is probably the heaviest in terms of content.

To be honest I'm waiting for someone to "actually..." me about how CPR works. I took some artistic liberty here because it's D&D but it's largely accurate to how it's taught as of 2024.

And if I hope to convey anything with this chapter it's how much doing manual compressions fucking sucks, and the sad fact that most of the time it doesn't work.

While we're on the subject of things I'm side-eying in the Ravenloft section of Archive of Our Own, I'm disturbed by how many stories unronically depict the relationship between Ireena and Strahd as a straight romance.

Look, the intent of the site is to write what you want, but that's hard NOPE for me.

I'm too old and too crabby to put any energy into fandom drama so now I just find it fucking hilarious.

I have kind of become Statler and Waldorf laughing at all of it.

"Look at these idiots. Oh ho ho ho ho ho!"

I rather like this description I wrote of Van Richten.

I've told my players that if a time discrepancy is noted they can assume it's some weirdness of the mists, otherwise it's just me failing to do the math correctly.

It's extremely funny that my Google Docs consistently hates that I use the British spelling of "grey" when describing the color.

It comes up multiple times in this story.

Also managed to sneak in a reference to a dragon from my homebrew setting.

Faye is Van Richten's 5 year old niece.

I've had this particular song running through my head as I write this story.

I repeatedly (through Arthur Sedgewick) describe Alanik Ray's eyes as "blue marbled with grey like the sky after a rainstorm" and looking at the sky today is a perfect example.

Stole a line from one of my favorite The National songs for this latest story.

Specifically "radiant darkness."

I feel like this song is very Rudolph Van Richten in general. Especially "everything's weird and we're always in danger."

Figured out how I can introduce the player characters to the idea of Van Richten as a force for good this is my original plan of tying him into a PC's backstory went sideways since that player had to drop out.

Fredrich and Hilda Kreutzer send them a copy of his guide to vampires after finding out that they had an unfortunate* run in with a vampire spawn.

*for the vampire spawn since he got a bottle of wine broken over his head and then lit on fire by one of the PCs

I also just came up with something incredibly evil, which is the idea that Alcio's sword is cursed so that if she kills you with it your soul is bound to the blade and makes it stronger.

I already named her sword after the one that was carried by Akechi Mitsuhide so I think it fits.

Also explains why Alanik thought, when given the choice between a 650 foot drop off a waterfall onto rocks and dying from being impaled by that blade, to take his chances on the drop.

I admit half the reason I wrote in a brother in law for Van Richten is that the idea of someone calling the preeminent monster hunter in Ravenloft "Rudy" amuses me greatly.

I can feel myself going into hyperfocus author mode cuz I know what the next story I'm going to write is.

This involved figuring out what solo CPR in a world with magic would look like, and I decided the compressions would pretty much be the same and cure wounds takes the place of the AED in the resuscitation procedure.

One thing I kind of unintentionally did with my Darkon setting is reflavor spell scrolls as spell coins. It started with just an offhand mention of something that Marco had but I decided to turn it into an actual thing. Functionally they're exactly the same but I feel like a coin fits the vibe I'm establishing better than a scroll because they're easier to pass off as a normal object whereas I think a scroll is kind of conspicuous in a very Victorian-esque setting.

Not pictured: Marguerite then throwing a rotten turnip at said Mind Flayer, momentarily getting psychically dominated by it before managing to break free, hoisting two different party members over each shoulder and running the hell away while also doing a Kool-Aid Man on a door for the second time in about an hour in-universe, and managing to escape from goddamn Xanathar by the skin of our teeth.

I'm still chuckling about the fact that my players are convinced that Gerta von Aubrecker has a magically refilling wine glass when the actual explanation is she is faking being a drunk and in fact taking stage sips.

During D&D tonight we were kicking the ass of a fiend in the Amber Temple and then he ran off and turned invisible, and when we found the secret passage he disappeared into another player said "Lucy! You got some 'splainin to do!" and I couldn't stop laughing.

I had a patient on Sunday who was a little girl going up into Children's Hospital for a fairly minor thing (TL;DR she probably had an infection in her jaw but because she had a fever they wanted a specialist to look at it) but she had an IV in and her father was insisting that she wasn't allowed to bend her arm.

I tried to jump in to say that as long as nothing is running through said IV, that's fine, but he kept cutting me off, and I just dropped it.

@tantramar not going to lie and say I wasn't tempted to snap back, but I decided it wasn't worth it.

It's honestly one of the perpetual struggles being a female in my line of work.

@tantramar oh absolutely, but there are definitely certain situations when the gloves come off, and people are very very obvious about it.

@tantramar speaking for myself it's a large part stubbornness.
