Australia's new DigitalID will feature an advanced 2FA mechanism. You'll have to listen to a random pronunciation of "Maaaate" and determine whether it was friendly, neutral or a deadly-enemy statement.

Got a broken USB-3 port on my Mac Mini: nothing plugged into that works at all. The flow on is that it seems to cause some mouse stuttering if I also have a USB-C hub plugged in. (And that's regardless of whether I use the mouse in Bluetooth or USB mode.) And it's out of warranty. I had been thinking I'd keep it for another couple of years but now I'm not so sure. Doesn't require immediate replacement but it is irking me.

(Because it's an Intel based system, I'm not sure I want to bother with the whole out-of-warranty repair costs.)

Finally remembered to photograph a nearby plant today and feed it into a Google image search and … yeah, I’m already having discussions with the husband how I want to grow Chinese Wisteria along our back fence in Ballarat once the house is built and we get out there next year.

If you want to know how much coffee your household goes through, get a yearly subscription. Or two. We have two subscriptions with St Ali – 2 x 1 kg Orthodox beans come in every month, and we still run out of coffee and need a third bag of coffee each month.

And that's with me using pods when I need to for work in my office/bedroom as well.

OK, so now I’ve switched to aus.social, it seems the instance has a filter for the hashtag auspol – how can I disable that so I can just see said posts?

As I’ve been progressing through the series, it hasn’t been aging as well. I still say that the guts of Rama is a better story than , but some of the idiosyncrasies in the story are a bit cringe by the time you’re in book 3.

It’s gonna be truly wild when the admins for the hard-core kink federated instances start receiving complaints from Threads users when third party people re-post users from those instances.

Following the latest inspection from our independent auditor, we’ve spent the evening sending a terse yet detailed “fix this fucking shit ASAP” email to our builder.

The move is getting closer. You suddenly go from having all the time in the world to counting the seconds. And while the seconds wind down, the stress winds up.

Look, I love dogs, but I'm kind of over this outrage over councils considering banning dogs in pubs.

Some people are scared of dogs. (Seriously.)
Dog-friendly cafes show us that too many people don't actually do enough to restrain their dogs in public settings. I.e., there are enough irresponsible dog owners to ruin it for everyone.

I just had someone try to explain extent based filesystems to me.

I had to politely point out that I had used an extent based filesystem before they were born.

Pet theory: the paywalling of valid, useful information while misinformation is freely available everywhere is a leading contributor to our societal problems.

When you’re preparing to move and you’ve got your current house part packed, you definitely reach a point where there’s a weird sensation that it’s suddenly no longer home, and you’re psychologically in this limbo state until you can complete the move.

Whenever I read an off-the-grid news article, my GenX brain goes to "The Good Life", which I remember watching as a kid.

"Perfection is the enemy of good", businesses will say, before they go off and spend 3,000 hours interviewing 192 candidates for an entry-level, minimum-wage position that must have 20 years of experience in technology developed only 8 years ago.

I finally decommissioned my 2013 Mac Pro, which had been relegated to my secondary VMware ESX server (ESX running within Fusion). And there’s no way I can ever part with it. It’s such an aesthetically beautiful machine. It’ll sit on display in my office once I move to Ballarat. Just out of cam range ...

Ah yes, the joys of forcing people back into the office...

A friend of mine who works for a company that's forced staff to start coming back to the office a minimum of 3 days a week: the company has reinstituted a "social club", but chosen people from each team who must represent their team in the social club. (She's the mandatory attendee from her team.) The social club meets once a week at COB and my friend has a 1.5 hour commute almost regardless of time of day.

My advice to her? Find another job. JFC, companies that want to force people into the office then try to force social activities on them as well really need to wake up and smell the 21st century.

A few days ago I made the awful verbal flub of calling smoked cheese "smorked cheese" and now that phrase and naming lives with me forever.
