Finally replaced the battery in this PDA! Now I can take beautiful photos
(I think the lens is dirty, there’s no way it’s supposed to be this bad)

more photos shown on the clamshell PDA’s screen, there’s a very desaturated box of Timbits and two overexposed photos taken from my balcony

@Ninji Ohhhhhh one of the Sony Clié PalmOS devices! That's awesome you got it running! I had a T665c back in the day, but even with the stowaway keyboard it wasn't nearly as cool as the all-in-one flip models like yours.

baralheia,
@baralheia@dragonchat.org avatar

@Ninji Oh wow that's an awesome deal! Idk if you can still find cases for it but I know the stylus should be easy-ish to get since it's not an active stylus or anything. I used mine mostly for note taking in school but I remember playing the hell out of an RTS game called "Warfare Incorporated" and a bowling game too that I don't remember the name of anymore.

baralheia,
@baralheia@dragonchat.org avatar

@Ninji It's still pricey at ~£30 but if you don't mind a US-based seller, this is the cheapest listing I've found: https://www.ebay.com/itm/305568164581

Supposedly they ship international so it might be an option for ya! :dragnhappy:

Just a follow up on this folks: I (or any other BSKY user) can’t see your interactions with BSKY posts unless you follow this account:

@bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy

This is because a bunch of fedi users got upset at the idea of the bridge so participation is OPT-IN ONLY

If you wanna interact with BSKY users, you MUST follow that account or else you’re basically just following an RSS feed of someone’s posts https://furries.club/@lupomancer/112414677366249953

baralheia,
@baralheia@dragonchat.org avatar

@lupomancer I'm waiting for the bridge to mature before I jump on using it... I know it's still very much a work in progress but right now it's kind of a pain in the ass. It doesn't know how to handle CWs so it just posts the CW text and nothing else. If I understand correctly it also just truncates long posts down to the BlueSky character limit with an ellipsis, but I haven't yet actually tested that one. At least it properly threads replies to yourself, unlike the SkyMoth mirror service. Gonna be keeping an eye on Bridgy tho, it'll be glorious when I never have to touch BlueSky's site ever again haha

baralheia,
@baralheia@dragonchat.org avatar

@lupomancer Yeah, I want to use it, I've been excited for Bridgy ever since it was announced! I'm just waiting until it's a little more mature first before I implement the bridge as a permanent replacement for my existing BS account. I know it's kinda in an early beta state right now and the dev is still working on it, so I know it'll get there... But this whole "you gotta follow this account before your posts/replies/mentions will be bridged" thing is kinda awful lol. That needs to be fixed first, hopefully that comes soon. I also hope they figure out some way to let the bridge use an existing account on either end too, especially since BS doesn't have a way for me to move my posts/followers/etc to the new bridged account handle. My intention and goal is for Fedi to be my primary but have a presence on BS thru the bridge, and to be able to follow and interact with certain friends through it who only wanna use BS, but it's gotta have as little friction as possible for people.

As far as the CWs go, ideally, I'd like whatever bridge I use to post both the CW and the text, but in my (admittedly very limited) experience most BS users don't seem to care at all about such things so as long as my post makes it there I'm okay with that. Right now, SkyMoth will post the text without the CW, and Bridgy will post the CW by itself without the text... So until Bridgy fixes that, it's kind of a hard stop for me unfortunately.

So I just set up SkyMoth (https://skymoth.app/) to mirror my public posts from Mastodon to BlueSky and it was super easy! It'll be interesting to see how well it works.

BlueSky friendos, y'all seeing this?

baralheia,
@baralheia@dragonchat.org avatar

Sweet! It totally worked! Do replies to myself also get mirrored over?

baralheia,
@baralheia@dragonchat.org avatar

@lupomancer @lupomancer So... It depends on how your client handles replies, it seems! On desktop, I use Elk for it's multi-account support, but if I reply to a post it doesn't mention the person I'm replying to... despite that message still being treated as a reply by Fedi clients. Skymoth, however, thinks it's a whole new post and will mirror that over! So I'm either gonna have to start manually adding mentions or use a different client on desktop, I think.

baralheia,
@baralheia@dragonchat.org avatar

@lupomancer Yeah, okay. So self-replies even from your instance's default interface don't contain a mention to the person you're replying to - so Skymoth picks it right up and mirrors it as if it were a brand new post. If I add a mention to myself in my self-reply, then Skymoth doesn't mirror it.

So... yeah, if there's no mention, Skymoth doesn't realize it's a reply. Quirky, but I can work around this until it's fixed.

@lupomancer@furries.club avatar

Someone finally made a tool to cross post from Mastodon to Bluesky

https://skymoth.app/

It only cross posts public posts, and it splits posts longer than 300 characters into a thread, but I think that’s all I really need

baralheia,
@baralheia@dragonchat.org avatar

@lupomancer This looks super promising and is a great interim step, but I'm still holding out hope for Bridgy Fed's two-way bridge (https://fed.brid.gy) to go live. According to their most recent dev blog post, they're still waiting on BlueSky to drop the early-access 10-user limit for federated servers. Even so, I'm glad you posted about this crossposter, it will be useful until Bridgy Fed goes live!

The formerly abandoned Bell Labs building in Holmdel, NJ. At one point slated for demolition, the historic site has since been turned into Bell Works, a multi-use complex that was the filming location for the series Severance.

@AbandonedAmerica It blows my mind that it was ever abandoned in the first place! A huge number of the technologies we use today were originally conceived in that building. I'm so glad to see it preserved!

Can I just say that Homer Hickman is a gatekeeping fuck, and he can suck my dick and balls?

Imagine taking someone's dream job over a curse.

baralheia,
@baralheia@dragonchat.org avatar

@RickiTarr I remember when that whole thing happened... Homer wasn't actually responsible for her loosing her internship, though - he tried to intervene with NASA after everything blew up, and when that failed, he helped her find another one (though I never heard if that search was successful or not).

She lost that internship with NASA because interns are provided with, basically, an employee handbook that includes rules for conduct in public (and on the Web) - and because of how widely shared her interaction with Homer was, NASA quickly discovered her behavior and cut her loose for violating their expectations for conduct.

This Snopes article explains in further detail: https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/twitter-insult-nsc/

baralheia,
@baralheia@dragonchat.org avatar

@RickiTarr He played no role in the decision to hire or fire her is what I'm trying to say. Also, in a general sense I'd agree with you on the code of conduct argument... but sometimes there are extenuating circumstances. Personally I think her original post where she was super excited was perfectly fine! I'd be excited as fuck to land an internship like that too! But her reply to Homer is where things went sideways. If I publicly disrespected executive leadership directly to their faces over social media and that exchange went viral, making my employer look bad, I honestly wouldn't expect to keep my job.

@baralheia@dragonchat.org avatar

@RickiTarr It was never my intention for my replies to make you feel that way. My apologies.

you know how companies used to make flour sacks with pretty flower patterns on them because mothers would make dresses out of them for their daughters? we should bring that back. paper bags designed to be reused as wrapping paper. jars of jam designed to look nice filled with pencils or homemade sauces. fabric that's high quality enough to use as a patch.

give things a second life!!

@fluffypaws There's a local company called Garden Club that makes jellies and jams, and they pack their product into glass jars designed to be reused as drinking cups. They're not in all stores but I buy their product when I can!

Fediverse! I’ve been building a bridge to Bluesky, and they’re turning on federation soon, which means my bridge will be available soon too. You’ll be able to follow people on Bluesky from here in the fediverse, and vice versa.

Bluesky is a broad network with lots of worthwhile people and conversations! I hope you’ll give it a chance. Only fully public content is bridged, not followers-only or otherwise private posts or profiles. Still, if you want to opt out, I understand. Feel free to DM me at @snarfed (different account than this one), email me, file a GitHub issue, or put #nobridge in your profile bio.

A number of us have thought about this for a while now, we’re committed to making it work well for everyone, and we’re very open to feedback. Thanks for listening. Feel free to share broadly.

baralheia,
@baralheia@dragonchat.org avatar

@noxypaws @snarfed.org@snarfed.org @activitypubblueskybridge @fedidevs @fediversenews The Fediverse is already made up of literally dozens of various services that all speak the same protocol - Mastodon, Firefish, Pixelfed, Pleroma, Frendica, among many others - and users on one service can freely interact with users on another service. Personally I don't see this bridge as being anything different, really. I have essentially zero issue with a public post of mine being visible to any and all - that's the whole point of a public post on the open web, imo. As long as they hold true to their word that non-public posts won't be viewable via the bridge, I have no issues with it.

baralheia,
@baralheia@dragonchat.org avatar

@snarfed.org@snarfed.org @activitypubblueskybridge @fedidevs @fediversenews Here's a thought... While it's not a concern for me, I'm seeing a lot of worry from others about opt-in consent for this bridge. Could you consider (either by option or by default) having the bridge send newly-followed users a message through their service saying, basically, "this is an automatic message from Bridgy Fed. <User> wants to follow you from <service> via this bridge. Do you want to allow this?" and offer always, yes, no, and full opt-out options in response. The user who initiated the follow request wouldn't see anything until the newly-followed user responded, and no response would equal a "no" answer. Could something like that be doable?

baralheia,
@baralheia@dragonchat.org avatar

@shiri @snarfed.org@snarfed.org You misunderstand me - I'm well aware of how follows work on Fedi. What I'm suggesting is that there be an additional active consent prompt via DM specifically for the Bridgy Fed bridge when someone follows you through the bridge - the idea being since BlueSky is an external service and not part of the Fediverse, this not only informs users that Bridgy Fed is a thing and gives them control over whether or not they will allow their posts to be bridged over to BlueSky independent of their normal Fedi follow settings.
