I wish progressives could believe as much in their power together as regressives do. Yes, the regressives have that right-wing $$$, but if the $$ alone could have done it, they wouldn't have bothered trying to create disinfo campaigns to hook people through social media.

If things could turn around relatively quickly like this due to right-wing suscepts' belief in people power, they can turn the other way as well. Remember '60s counter-culture came about in reaction to repressive McCarthyism.

raphaelmorgan,
@raphaelmorgan@disabled.social avatar

@meganL it's been reassuring to see universities divesting in Israel in response to protests (even though many are dragging their heels). Kind of shows that when a lot of people care about something and organize they can make a difference. And we all know those student movements aren't absolutely rolling in money, at least not at the public universities
(Note I'm not trying to direct this post at a specific issue, just using the most recent example I can think of)

Reminder: Trump is accused of fraudulently hiding an in-kind campaign contribution.

He is not accused of having sex, which is legal. He is not accused of paying hush money, which is legal.

It does not matter whether Daniels is telling the truth. It does not matter whether she had sex with Trump. It does not matter what Daniels's motivation was. It does not matter whether Trump paid her to keep quiet.

If he knowingly conspired to hide an in-kind campaign contribution, he is guilty.

@peterainbow @GeePawHill meanwhile the rest of us are being bombarded with news about the trial too and it's just like... We get it. We've gotten it for like a decade now, for some of the younger of us. We don't want to hear more about him unless it actually affects us or the good of the people, and we're tired of seeing his face.
As you mentioned, it must also be annoying af for people who aren't even in the US /gen

raphaelmorgan,

@wxcafe considering sometimes a phone is the only way people can look at digital text, maybe we should simply have multiple options (so you can keep your PDFs) instead of gatekeeping academic papers and TTRPGs for people who have computer access? Especially the former bc education is a powerful tool

This is a thread, it was originally on twitter posted on tumblr and i found it in my export. I think that this is a very important thing for people to hear, especially in regards to alt text on fedi. Please be mindful of the people around you, and try to make things accessible. I think that the people around me can relate to this, I have had a lot of times my short term memory would just blank out and I would have to ask over and over again for someone to repeat themselves.

I hate the term "hysterical pregnancy," not only because "hysterical" is usually used for misogyny and sanism, but also because etymologically it means something to do with the uterus and boy do I have news for you about normal pregnancies

For better or worse, the past weeks has mastodon becoming a proper source of breaking news for me. This happened for me w/ twitter during the boston marathon bombing. It's often not direct sources using mastodon, but people reposting direct sources (originally from twitter, or IG, or others).

So I'm glad that we have an open protocol that can bypass traditional news media to show what's actually happening in real time, but I'll also miss scrolling through mostly cats and moss instead of doom.

raphaelmorgan,

@Andres4NY maybe we should all create separate timelines with a few hashtags like caturday/catsOfMastodon and whatever they call the mossposting one

@MylesRyden @Adam_Cadmon1 universities are made for the purpose of serving the billionaire class, sure. That doesn't mean we shouldn't be getting educated at them if we can while we work on dismantling those systems, because for every shitty admin (aka every admin) there's a professor who refuses to serve capitalists more than their students

Again for people (racists), complaining about falling birth rates:

The birth rate for women over 40 is not falling. The birth rate for women over 30 is not falling.

What's happening, is girls 15 to 17 are having fewer babies. Kids are having fewer kids.

Also, this is an interesting way of saying that "Teen pregnancy is down, due to sex education and contraception."

In 1991 25% of 15 year olds gave birth before they turned 21. That's bad. Now it's 6%. That's better.

https://npr.org/2023/01/08/1147737247/teen-pregnancy-rates-have-declined-significantly

raphaelmorgan,
@raphaelmorgan@disabled.social avatar

@mekkaokereke not a woman but as an adult who can give birth, I fucking would if I could afford to have kids right now. Because of capitalism, I probably can't for a long time and maybe not ever. But if I could just be a stay at home parent or afford kids while working part time, I would. I know plenty of people in this category, but it's really not about birth rates and entirely about control. Forcing adults to know nothing but work and forcing kids to have kids

Doomsday prepping, except instead of doing it by yourself you do it with your neighbors, and instead of building a bunker you build a just, compassionate, and sustainable community.

raphaelmorgan,
@raphaelmorgan@disabled.social avatar

@tjdungeonmaster I was pleased to discover that Portland has a lot of community gardens that are cheap to get started on, and I'm sure they're not the only place. For a while I've really wanted to find a community to build infrastructure with. If capitalism and the US come crashing down (🤞) it's a nice backup. If they don't, it's perhaps the only way to survive them.
