Here’s what is happening: We are witnessing executives and managers make technology that sounds appealing to them.

Here’s the problem: Most people are not executives or managers. By nature of management, workers are trying to work.

This whole AI-clones-in-meetings subcategory exists because of this misunderstanding.

@ernie “We know you hate our product so much that we’re making a way for you to pretend you’re using it while you get your actual work done”

Seems pretty great to me! 🤷

brandon,
@brandon@craftcms.com avatar

@ernie That would be tricky. If it’s popular enough in your company to warrant a price hike, maybe you start to realize that you should just have less meetings.

In mind of the fact that voice assistants and many AI things are almost always coded female (because things you give orders to, treat as a service provider, and own are "naturally female" apparently), is any work being done for gender-less voices?

brandon,
@brandon@craftcms.com avatar

@mattwilcox you are asked to select your Siri voice when setting up new Apple devices. Two of the four are pretty gender-neutral.

I wouldn't doubt there will be a legit medical condition where the proliferation of AI causes people to question everything they see and read to the point of serious mental trouble. Not that questioning things is bad, I mean to the point that you are unable to believe anything.

brandon,
@brandon@craftcms.com avatar

@chriscoyier I’m much more worried about the opposite problem

I just let Claude write a short article about :has() as a test and while it got browser support wrong (probably because of older training data) the code examples turned out far better than those in the latest piece by DigitalOcean on CSS-Tricks… 🫣

brandon,
@brandon@craftcms.com avatar

@matthiasott But does it include a :has(.cheezburger) example?

Trying to buy a domain that is “registered” but really just being squatted by GoDaddy for the past month. Ponied up the $70 to go through GD’s domain broker service, and they are saying they recommend making an offer between $1K-$3.5K 🙄 (Third party broker sites value the domain at < $100.)

Has anyone been down this road? What are my chances of getting the domain for a reasonable price?

brandon,
@brandon@craftcms.com avatar

Amazing response.

How is this company still in business?

Got to play with CSS subgrid today.

For whatever reason my MBP has started rebooting itself every few days overnight, which has made me painfully aware that Firefox’s “Restore Previous Session” feature is unreliable. So I guess I need to switch to something else. 😔

What are people using nowadays that isn’t Chrome/Edge/Safari?

brandon,
@brandon@craftcms.com avatar

@simoncox Yeah Chromium-based is fine… I just don’t trust Google, and don’t care for the weird UI… crhome… that Edge adds

brandon,
@brandon@craftcms.com avatar

@stegrainer I try Safari every couple years and it just never sticks. I know they’ve been kicking ass lately so maybe worth another go…

@brandon Brandon, can I have a look around in the Craft 5 museum demo site to see how everything is set up now. Mostly to verify if I am doing things correctly. I’ve tried to use the form on the Craft site to request access but I always get a ‘bad request' error I"m afraid. Thanks!

brandon,
@brandon@craftcms.com avatar

@veerlepieters That whole repo is here: https://github.com/craftcms/europa-museum It’s probably not the most straightforward example, though.

We’ll look into that error. Yiu can also email support@craftcms.com directly (goes to the same place).

brandon,
@brandon@craftcms.com avatar

@mattwilcox Weird, maybe you hit a rate limit or something.

brandon,
@brandon@craftcms.com avatar

@mattwilcox Not sure how? it’s just files, and doesn’t get involved in the git cloning stuff. Can you try it with git clone?

brandon,
@brandon@craftcms.com avatar

@mattwilcox Thanks for checking. Maybe worth reporting a bug here: https://support.github.com/contact/bug-report

Has anyone created a hamburger menu with class="cheezburger” and needed to write a CSS selector for an ancestor element with :has(.cheezburger) yet?

Been saying the same for a while. If Apple continue to go iOS for new devices, they’ll lose everyone but consumers.

The thing is, iOS is their cash cow. It’s a platform, not an OS. It’s their citadel of profit. The keys to their kingdom.

Which is why they want to maintain iron clad control of it despite regulatory pressure.

It’s also why it’s shit for most non-consumer use; Its locked down nature is its Achilles heel too.

It’s the reason iPad is a toy. Same for AVP. https://mastodon.social/@lyonsinbeta/111913944554955251

brandon,
@brandon@craftcms.com avatar

@mattwilcox 100% for iPadOS – wasted opportunity there. I don’t currently see any “traditional computing” potential in AVP though. Basic tasks like browsing the web or writing an email are awkward in it, even with a keyboard.

brandon,
@brandon@craftcms.com avatar

@mattwilcox yeah but unfortunately the whole “bring your Mac into AVP” thing is mostly a gimmick. Mac apps are pretty unusable in there, without all the UI optimizations that native apps have. https://masto.craftcms.com/@brandon/111903687953873789

@brandon@craftcms.com avatar

“Going beyond that, could we use software to color adjust and show the world as those with color blindness see? As people with other visual impairments see?”

That thought occurred to me as well. AVP has potential to be a powerful accessibility tool.

@chriscoyier I tried using it for development for 3 hours and, no.

Last major content modeling feature for Craft 5 just dropped: inline field creation/editing within field layout designers.

It’s now possible to create a section, entry types, and custom fields all in the same workflow. No more bouncing all over the control panel 🎉

https://github.com/craftcms/cms/pull/14260

Several overlapping slideouts, editing an entry type, custom field, and nested entry type all at once

brandon,
@brandon@craftcms.com avatar

@mattwilcox definitely lost on me but I’ll take it!
