I’m a writer, but don’t expect deep, personal shit. I’m a sysadmin who doesn’t like nerds, they’re every bit as willing to be the most vicious and petty of bullies as the people they claim they’re so very different from.

But as individuals, they’re all right.

A lefty who hunts, so not an NRA fan. Done martial arts for years, not one of the MMA clowns.

If I say “free software” I ONLY am speaking of the price.

I am continuously amused at mastonerds saying “do you want social media controlled by capricious billionaires!!” all the while acting in a way that shows the only difference between them & musk/dorsey/etc. is the billions.

No skeezix, i don’t want social media controlled by capricious billionaires, nor do I want it controlled by a legion of equally capricious & petty thousand- and hundredaires so that folks spend as much time moving between servers as they do actually doing social media things.

As someone who would still happily run back to a mids schedult (midnight to 8am) this is hilarious to me.

Folks are either mids or they are not. There is no “learning to deal.” Flopping your world like that ain’t easy. Lotta folks can’t handle it.

So after decades of claiming Apple’s App Store was holding back innovation and there was this massive amount of amazing apps that were being held down by Apple’s “draconian” policies, there are now alternate app stores and the big news?

Fucking console emulators.

THAT is what we’ve all been held down by? Not being able to play Pokémon on an iPhone?

This is supposed to make me take any of you fucks seriously?

Y’all are less serious than Elon’s dick drip.

20 years ago, sure. Nowadays? Oh god fuck no, you’ll spend all day every day dealing with attacks and security issues.

People who don’t know better will be in a world of pain they cannot imagine and anyone who does know better and still subscribes to this technolibertarian bullshit deserves all the pain they get.

Unless you absolutely have to, (and if you even ask if you need to, the answer is, again, FUCK NO), do. not. run. your. own. email. server.

JFC.

This seems cool, but based on what an admittedly fast search found, is there really no way to automate Affinity Publisher beyond basically mail merge?

Someone please tell me this app has a proper automation implementation. https://mastodon.social/@JasonAnthonyGuy/112576510741333419

The funny thing to me about the reluctance of tech workers to strike is how scab-resistant tech inherently is.

The uniqueness of every environment and the required time to come up to speed with even a simple project due to differences in environment and needs means that unlike the "old" days when you could get someone basically competent quickly and onboarding took maybe an hour, in tech?

a FAST onboarding is a day. Like wicked fast.

I love this elitist techbro meme that automakers “can’t quit” stock shifts so they’re “forcing” them on people.

Not once does it possible occur to them that there are people who like the act of driving and having that level of control as they drive, that they love actively driving, not being conveyed about with the minimal effort possible so they can…sit there and hate that they have to leave the house.

Imagine thinking anyone but fossstans give any more of a thruppenny fuck than they did about the PS3 either running Linux or losing that ability.

It’s a game console. Not everything has to do everything. An impact wrench doesn’t also have to give you a French Blowjob, it just has to be a good impact wrench.

I’d say more Fossstans need to touch grass, but grass isn’t controlled by the GPL, so they hate grass.

Honest to god, Elon’s incompetence has always been on display, y’all just didn’t want to see.

The more hands on he is, the more things are fucked. Prior to the explosion in TX, he was mostly PR for SpaceX, and it showed. SpaceX was methodical, competent and safe.

Every year I am more convinced that FOSS advocates want devs to be serfs, only able to survive on donations, and they only get the donations if they behave right.

They decry the “invasion” of corporate money, but how many years was OpenSSL barely existing? These dilettante motherfuckers are happy to let the boring, but critical foss project maintainers starve or forever have to do critical foundational work part-time and alone so they can enjoy ideological purity.

Mastodorks: “THREADS WILL RUIN THE FEDIVERSE!!”

Also mastodorks: “Threads is making federation opt-in, SEE?!? THEY DON’T REALLY WANT FEDERATION!!!

At this point, I’m convinced 100% of all criticism of Threads working with activitypub is bad faith fearmongering by the same dumbasses who are still in line to give Stallman and Torvalds a rusty trombone in a Taco Bell parking lot.

one of the things I find…not amusing, but amusing about the Vision Pro (VP) discussion is the dismissal of productivity apps as important to the platform. They very much aren’t.

For example, my current industry is manufacturing. One of the things we're moving to is MBE, or Model-Based Engineering, wherein the “truth" source for a widget isn't a 2D drawing in AutoCAD/Creo/Solidworks, but a 3D model. The source of truth is a virtual representation of the thing you're trying to build /1

I kind of agree. Saying “use open source/foss” as a magic incantation to every problem with non-open source software is ignorant as fuck.

It tells me you don’t care about the problem at hand, what the right solution for the issue in context is, or anything of use.

You only care that I follow your belief system.

This kind of shit is so bad that I reflexively avoid (f)oss because the ideologues pushing it have about made me allergic to it.

The perfect example of why I will never regard fossstans as serious people or worth serious discussion.

They fundamentally do not care about solving problems or making anything actually better, only the labels on the tools.

But this chef is also giving away the recipe and all the cooking tips for making the recipes so literally anyone can make them.

Which means this specific chef is only important in the creation of that one pastry which everyone can now make and they can use that as a base to create their own.

So ultimately the chef or many chefs going on strike has no importance, because their work can be perfectly replicated, then adapted and improved upon.

There’s the Idaho option: OB-GYNs leave the state for places where they can safely practice medicine.

This won’t actually hurt the only people Paxton cares about, rich honkies, but if enough middle-class white women are hurt by this, maybe they’ll vote for their own interests for a change.

Basically, unless the honkies that created the current Texas state gov. choose to vote differently, nothing will change & I don’t see why any doc should operate in that legal climate.

It’s amusing/depressing to me how if the developer community put half the work into replacing git with something that isn’t shit to use/impossible to understand, as they have in building an infrastructure around explaining git, we’d have an easy to use, full featured software versioning system.

Devs don’t want things to be better.

They love a critical component of modern development as an automated gatekeeper so the “unworthy” don’t get in.

I take none of your complaints about git seriously.
