After spending the day chopping down 20 honey locust trees I have an image for a horror movie poster, just a line giant honey locust tree in a field.

Name of movie: “Honey Locust”

Tagline: “Hate Grows”

The origin of the tree is that it grew from the crown of thorns Christ wore.

But like 70s horror, complete with nutso caretaker local telling people to keep away, that tree’s evil, and a local indigenous group trying to figure out how to kill it and failing for centuries.

The land it’s on gets bought by a honkie tech yuppie family, burnt out and wanting to “return to the land.”

They buy a hundred acres in fuckoff missouri, with a LOT of honey locusts, and they keep growing back no matter what they try.

Then they learn you have to kill the mother tree, which is a truly giant tree. Cue a string of bloody thorn-caused deaths and you’re never really sure if the tree is really evil or the humans are all stupid.

honey locust trees are just fucking awful.

It's painful watching so many nerds wonder why people are flocking to Blue Sky while shitting on things like being able to respond to messages with quotes, people who have large followings, UX that makes signing up easy for non-techies etc.

@wcbdata @outeast @BlackAzizAnansi here’s the thing: quotes already exist. It’s a client implementation. (Amusingly, that was where QT started on twitter.) The anti-QT crowd has failed.

Period. They have failed.

But the worst part about it is that in failing the way they chose, they have removed any possibility of managing it in the protocol. Opt-in/opt out? Nope. Ability to restrict it at the instance level? Lol, nope.

So not only have the anti’s failed, they failed in a way that prevents any and all forms of protocol/instance-level management.

They are exactly like the dingalings who went to war against all non-plaintext email in the 1990s, are failing in exactly the same way, and are too headass to realize it.

The good/bad argument literally has no value anymore, now it’s about how to mitigate harm. Including it in the protocol is the only way.

@wcbdata @outeast @BlackAzizAnansi by doing that, you remove extra work for the client devs, they can remove now-unnecessary code (which is hugely effective) and the chance of management/harm mitigation increases from the current zero.

Or keep fighting a lost battle. Flog that dead horse, but it is definitely dead.

Everyone keeps saying the MTA and other gov. twitter accounts should come to mastodon and “just run their own servers.”

The level of cluelessness in that is really astounding and tells me the people saying it have no idea how government works other than voting every n years.

No sweet child, no gov. agency “just runs” a server. That server requires a new budget, FTE allocations, technical staff, moderation staff, (all of whom must be paid), IT resources, security resources…

Stop acting like your 1-10 person instance has any value in this. It does not.

Then there’s the federation issue. “I hate <thing>, my instance will defed any instance with <entity>”

That’s a problem for a service like transport, NOAA, NWS, etc.

In comparison, getting approval for something like twitter/bluesky is trivial.

Techies are just clueless 1mm outside of their specialty. Y’all mock generalists, but y’all make all the mistakes we know how to avoid.

Y’all need to learn.

@hobbypainternyc the technical documentation isn’t an issue. Every gov. org has a myriad of rules for such things, many of which are unique to the state. Funding, security, etc.

The technical issues are relatively minor, it’s all the other things that make “just set up your server” way harder than people think.

Ruminations on mobile gaming, a 🧵

I spend some leisure time playing Star Trek Fleet Command from Scopely. It's a free-to-play mobile game that, in typical fashion, is heavily gated with pay-to-win mechanisms to let players advance.

As a minnow - someone who spends very little to play - I'm always flabbergasted when I talk to the whales, or those members of my alliance who think nothing of dropping hundreds of dollars at a time to gain a level or advance ship or building construction.

@flargh FTP is such a vehicle for abuse. I rather like how DDO and FFXIV handle it. They approach it in different ways, but there’s less of the “if you don’t spend money you’re fucked” nonsense. Way less.

All of the posts on Mastodon about how the Blue Sky team was silly for releasing a social media network in 2023 without blocking and moderation, even in private beta, and that the Blue Sky team should have known what would happen...

...are being written on Mastodon: a social media platform that in 2023, still doesn't take into account that Black users face a disproportionate amount of very specific types of abuse, and is missing key features that would make the Black population safer. 🙂🙃

Change requires people, influencers attract people. Painting them all with the stripe mastodon does is yet another example of the unbearable whiteness of mastodon.

The number of negative interactions with people outside of those two sets are not even a rounding error in comparison.

Honestly, I would fully support a social media platform that banned cishet honkie males.

I would also be terribly envious of it.
