Why is the light emitted by my laptop monitor polarized? Is it deliberate or simply an inconsequential result of the way it’s manufactured?

@mkwadee It's the way LCD displays work. It's more obvious with an old monochrome calculator, but the same principle applies to color. An electric field aligns the liquid crystals which polarizes the light transmitted through them.

I really appreciate that I can interleave farming and my astronomy job, but the juxtapositions that happen are pretty wild sometimes.

Today, I milked 5 goats + bottle fed 4, got a "congrats" email from my uni president for being interviewed in National Geographic, a farrier is coming soon to trim my old mini horses' hooves (which I've tried to do myself and it's HARD), I have an international committee meeting on light pollution, meetings with research students, and I cleaned up cat puke.

Took a quick sanity walk in the woods. There are LEAVES!! FINALLY!!

Also moose poo. And a giant hole in the field?! (Maybe badger?! I'm not actually sure what makes a hole that big...)

Looking out over a different swampy area with lots of dead grass and fallen logs, and a bunch of standing trees just starting to get neon green leaves
A big pile of moose poo pellets scattered on dead grass with new grass starting to poke up through the dead grass. My foot is in the picture for scale, the poo pellets are maybe 3 inches long and look almost exactly like large chocolate covered almonds
Looking down on a really big hole in the ground, with some dead grass around and new live grass starting to poke up through the dead grass. My foot is again in the picture for scale, I could easily fit my foot inside the hole.

Along with Large Cloud Season in Colorado comes extreme weather warnings. While it's mostly pretty dire and not a laughing matter, I can't help but be amused at the descriptions used for hail stones. Instead of something simple like "half inch" or "one inch" descriptions, they insist on using "golf ball" (okay), "lemon" (which kind?), and "half-dollar sized". Who the hell thinks in terms of half dollars anymore? Are those even legal tender?

Now our country’s public health decisions are going to be shaped by my responses!

It's not often that I have an anti-recommendation for a book, but I finished reading Nightfall by Asimov/Silverberg. I loved the premise for the story (so much cool orbital dynamics!) But the second half of the book was one of the most depressing, nightmarish things I've ever read. Do not recommend.

@sundogplanets Agreed, cool concept, but a lot of Asimov has aged very poorly.

I tried re-reading Foundation last year and got about ten pages in before going 'ick!' and putting it away.

    time! I spend my time and in . My day job is inventing new technologies to let us see new and interesting things with satellite images. I used to be a professional researcher and before I got tired of the whole thing. Sometimes I ride bikes or take pictures of and stuff. Occasionally I brew halfway decent .
