RT @alexfromnj This will only cause more traffic, increase air pollution, and cost taxpayers billions while our mass transit system leaves people stranded.

NJ needs to expand transit, not highways.

RT @komanoff It's tiring having to again refute poorly reported scare stories like today's NYT Metro "Congestion Pricing Could Bring Cleaner Air But Maybe Not for Everyone." Truth is, even taking zero credit for transit improvements, the toll will cut driving outside the zone.

All those trips into the congestion zone that will be deterred (not just rerouted) emanate from outside, so their disappearance will cut non-zone VMT. even South Bronx, as fewer trips from Scarsdale etc. pass through

RT @BillOdeaJC The NJ Turnpike expansion in the downtown neighborhood of Jersey City I represent will only further contribute to environmental degradation, displacement of communities, and encourage increased traffic congestion. A plan that also includes investment in light rail expansion, Ferry Service and other mass transit options that will encourage commuters to opt off of the Turnpike sooner must be part of the solution. We need a sustainable solution.

Anniversary blog post from May 30, 2012: The Tri-State Transportation Campaign released a report on Dangerous Roads for Walking, which was a good idea in general, but I recommended measuring the danger per mile, not just on the road with that name, since the lengths varied.

A spot-check on crashmapper suggests that some roads, like the Bowery and Fourteenth Street, were a lot safer in 2011-2024, while others, like Brighton Beach Avenue and the Grand Concourse, were not.

We should have torn down the 1950s-era Bronx River Parkway extension that people keep dying on (one person died last month). Instead advocates stopped at a half-assed Sheridan Expressway teardown and we're spending $138 million to rebuild the bridge with wider lanes and shoulders. Sorry, we gotta cut corners on transit, though!
