RT @aarmlovich Decommodification--ditching the price system in favor of a lottery, waitlist, or other rationing--can be done, but urban housing scarcity is a physical fact

It is possible to turn high prices into 20-year waitlists, for example, but it will not fit 100 families into 90 homes

Thanks. I agree. So watch.

Anniversary blog post from May 25, 2011: Whenever I hear people claim that Uber and Lyft "destroyed" New York City's taxi system, my mind boggles at how completely ignorant or how deep in denial they must be. In Paris, the transit authority reconfigured its train shops and built apartments on the land freed up. It's now renting them out to its bus drivers, a 936 square foot apartment with a balcony for about $900 a month.

In New York the MTA provides parking for employees who drive in from the suburbs.

Anniversary blog post from May 21, 2008, when the US government spent $100 million a year on "Essential Air Service," subsidizing flights to tiny airports in the middle of nowhere. It's now almost $400 million a year.

In New York State the airports served now are Watertown, Massena and Saranac Lake. We could probably save a lot of money by restoring passenger service on the train lines that used to serve those towns!

RT @bellachu10 When contemplating “war” it’s helpful to consider who is doing the killing and who is doing the dying. Cars are inanimate objects used to wage war on PEOPLE. People on foot (and bikes) are dying at the highest rate in 40 years. There is no war on cars. There is only self defense.

We currently have a system where we rely on hundreds of millions of individual drivers. If any one of them has a genuine medical episode, let alone some lapse of attention or judgment explained away as a "medical episode" by the cops, it is very easy for it to kill or seriously injure that person and others.

We used to have a system where most people walked or were passengers and the really dangerous vehicles were guided by rails, but apparently this is progress.
