Anniversary blog post from May 25, 2011: Whenever I hear people claim that Uber and Lyft "destroyed" New York City's taxi system, my mind boggles at how completely ignorant or how deep in denial they must be. This post was part of a series where I described how fantastically shitty the taxi system was in 2011:

@crzwdjk The one-stop shopping was huge too. Not having to look up phone numbers for cab companies, call around, and worry if you were getting ripped off, or if you called the company that happened to be extra busy at that time.

Now there are lots of drivers who are registered simultaneously with Uber, Lyft and Via, so you don't even need to check all three!

@EverydayMoggie Uber executives said a lot of things over the course of the rollout, many of which contradicted each other.

I don't support Uber. I think the execs are amoral at best. But that doesn't mean that we should go back to the shitty taxi system we had before. Everyone involved with that was also stupid and selfish.

If there's an argument against Uber, you should assume I've already heard it. There are tons of good arguments. No need to make stupid reactionary arguments.

One of the most fucking embarrassing things for rail in the US is that we used to use the rail infrastructure itself to build more tracks. And there's a businessman in North Bergen who has a plan to use trains to remove all the rock and dirt dug out of the Gateway Tunnel, and bring in supplies.

But Kris Kolluri and the Gateway development Commission look at him like he has two heads, and would rather pay for 15-26 trucks to drive up and down Tonnelle Avenue every hour.

Anniversary blog post from May 24, 2014: It's time to extend the N train to LaGuardia.

For years, people had told me that NIMBYs in Astoria had killed the proposed extension in 1994, and would do the same with any future attempt. I pointed out that two of the main opponents were dead, two retired, and one term limited. George Onorato died the following year.

I had to keep beating the drum, but eventually the plan was reconsidered, and no NIMBYs appeared to kill it!

In Paris, the transit authority reconfigured its train shops and built apartments on the land freed up. It's now renting them out to its bus drivers, a 936 square foot apartment with a balcony for about $900 a month.

In New York the MTA provides parking for employees who drive in from the suburbs.

RT @wheelreinvent Hate this attitude: Parking can never be removed, if you remove spaces, you have to rebuild them somewhere else (in this case, underground at massive cost).

All that actually needs to happen here is to remove the parking spaces gradually.
