peak AI hype is James Cameron thinking he needs to wait to see where real AI is going before making a new Terminator movie https://movieweb.com/james-cameron-working-on-new-terminator-movie/

Today I impulsively decided that I'm going to start doing weekly internet news round-ups as well! (In addition to the AI ethics one.) This is all part of my sabbatical plan for more public communication/education. Anyway, here it is! And I'm going to be making a conscious effort to make sure it's not all just bad news. :) http://bit.ly/internet-news

I've been doing news round-ups explicitly for AI ethics and policy, for TikTok and Instagram. (Having a more specific focus is helpful now that I'm not teaching and don't need to cover all of tech!) Towards this end I've started a more organized spreadsheet so that it's easier for folks to dig in and read more if they like!

(Also always feel free to point me to interesting articles that aren't on this list.)

Heh this is a new one. I thought I wouldn't have this to deal with since leaving "Georgia Tech University." ๐Ÿ˜†

@nancybaym and thereโ€™s both University of Denver and University of Colorado Denver so it can get confusing :)

I assume this is new? ChatGPT now has a message below references that reads: "Please note that the above references are fictional and created for the purpose of this example. In a real academic paper, it is essential to use actual, relevant, and properly cited references from reputable sources in the field."

Just saw a TikTok from a woman explaining how when she was 12 she learned HTML so she could make Neopets websites and then (legitimately not realizing that this might be bad) creating a fake login page to trick people into giving her their account passwords. She says she had no idea why this was wrong until her dad caught her.

This is the best example I've ever heard of the "you can do a lot of damage with a little bit of code" re: why ethics should be part of learning intro programming.

I really need to finish the "Dear Computer Science Departments" Medium post about ethics education I have half written.

@joshuagrochow hahaha! I really did mean to finish and post it before a talk I'm giving at a conference this week. Maybe I'll finish it on the plane. :)

Go read @ct_bergstrom 's thread on this pre-print paper that was covered in both Science and NPR (!) which er, baffling. But also as Carl pointed out, this is an amazingly high response rate for a survey (95.8%). And respondents were told that "failure to reply โ€“ or replying inadequately โ€“ could trigger retraction." I highly suspect they had no idea that this was a research study, and may still not know. No ethics discussion in the paper.

cfiesler,
@cfiesler@hci.social avatar

Again, the paper is seriously lacking in detail on what they actually did, but the "answer our survey or or else" thing reminds me of the Princeton fake email study from a few years ago, which they ended up apologizing for. https://privacystudy.cs.princeton.edu/?update

TL;DR they were studying how websites implemented GDPR, so they emailed a bunch of organizations with a message that made it sound like they might be in legal trouble, which legitimately scared some people.

This week, Science published a stunningly irresponsible news story entitled "Fake scientific papers are alarmingly common" and claiming that upward of 30% of the scientific literature is fake.

https://www.science.org/content/article/fake-scientific-papers-are-alarmingly-common

Below, the first two paragraphs of the story.

Headline and intro notwithstanding, the story itself later notes that the detector doesn't actually work and flags nearly half of real papers as fake. Does the reporter just not understand that?

cfiesler,
@cfiesler@hci.social avatar

@ct_bergstrom I just had a look at the paper and I'm wondering if you (or someone!) understand what "international coauthor/partner" actually means to them. Are they basing this on specific countries? Like there has to be a western co-author? Or would their tool suggest that a paper with all U.S. authors is more likely to be fake? (Their methods are also just... not well described. :-\ )

Anyway yeah this is baaaaad, thank you for the thread.

cfiesler,
@cfiesler@hci.social avatar

@ct_bergstrom I was thinking about this when I read the paper, too. I actually suspect that didn't get informed consent for this. I'm not sure what ethics review looks like in Germany, but if they'd been in the U.S. I would have assumed they didn't get IRB approval or were approved for deception. Maybe their response rate was high because people thought it was real and they'd get in trouble if they didn't.

Maybe it was similar to the Princeton fake email study: https://privacystudy.cs.princeton.edu/?update

@ct_bergstrom He still hasn't explained the "international co-author" criteria has he? I

Ever since that annoyingly wrong BLUESKY OWNS YOUR CONTENT article I've been thinking about models of ownership online. Because it's not just about copyright but also ethics... and privacy... and then I remembered I wrote about this exact thing in 2015. :) https://cfiesler.medium.com/who-cares-about-my-dog-pictures-ownership-of-social-media-content-data-380b6333eee2

Also if you don't click on the link in the post above this JUST to see a photo of my dog then I am very disappointed in you.

(That photo is 8-ish years old but he is still just as cute. Just now in a little old man way. :) )

Elsevier certainly isn't the entirety of this problem, but I think they're the worst symbol of it, and I'd welcome the message that their demise would send. https://www.theguardian.com/science/2023/may/07/too-greedy-mass-walkout-at-global-science-journal-over-unethical-fees

OK question I keep wondering about.
Who is The Information for?

Based on the headlines I often come across it seems like a potentially good publication, but I will click on a story and then remember that it's paywalled behind a $400/year subscription.

Is the business model that say tech companies are paying for access for their employees?

I just spent a bit of time scrolling through Twitter this morning, and now I don't want to go back. (I haven't been reading Twitter much at all lately, just posting occasionally.)

Though to be clear, I think the things that are making me sad about Twitter this morning are not about Twitter, and could absolutely (and probably will) be replicated on Mastodon.

@jbigham @cyberlyra The great irony of the policy fellowship was that they gave me that much to work for free in Mountain View for the summer and my rent was so much that I actually ended up leaving the internship in the hole. ๐Ÿ˜ญ So anyway I don't feel particularly beholden to Google LOL.
