Anyone here leant into the idea of a digital garden? Perhaps you tried it and found it wasn't for you? Would love to check some out.

I've become more and more enamored with this idea.

I'd do away with published dates and a chronological list (For the most part, I still need to consider RSS) and I'd remove any pressure that a post needs to be fully finished to post it.

I could tend to the digital garden over time and nurture older, incomplete posts... if I wanted.

@jake4480 Ah nice! Aha yeah weeding out the dead links or remembering to do so might be a pain. Now I'm dreaming up an automated link checker that runs in the build step. I've not even started my digital garden/blog/personal site but already adding complexity 😅

Why have I been sleeping on AVIF!? The site I tested it on isn't particularly image heavy, but turning 1.8 MB .png into 330 KB .avif is just an absolute win. All done on the fly thanks to the 11ty Image Plugin 💚

Enhancing my JavaScript knowledge bit by bit - today with a fun short clip by @cferdinandi and @kevinpowell; explaining var, let, and const - and when/where to use them for declaring a variable.

Still thinking about the porridge I made this morning. It was so so good! 😭

I experimented leaving the oats soaking over night - so when cooked up this morning it became so sooooo creamy.

  • 1 cup Oats
  • 1.5 cup Soy Vanilla Milk
  • .5 cup Oat Milk (Soak them oats in oats)
  • Pinch of salt
  • Handful of golden raisins

We have ours with a spoon of peanut butter in the bowl, but another fav is crushed walnuts, goji berry, and cinnamon.

I'll forever be soaking them overnight from now on! 🥣

I was toying with the idea of sharing stuff for various projects on TikTok (An account for each project where it might make sense to do so)

and... I don't think I can - I get the ick every time I open the the website/app 🤮

Its basically all short video content too which I'm not really sure I want to lean in on (or at least, I haven't found an effective workflow for it yet)

christian,
@christian@aldr.social avatar

@jake4480

Aha yeah visiting the site is a perilous task 😅

Yikes, the idea that the account can just get shut down for no reason sucks :( Sorry that happened to you.

I just don't know how worth it it could be - but I felt compelled to consider it for my project/business.

These things do take up a whole bunch of time I find, more than I would have imagined.

@jake4480 They banning everybody 😓 And cool account! I only posted like two things and I don't think I can stomach the site anymore lol

I used to scoff at the idea of those Farming Simulator games, but now I'm sitting here thinking -

"Yeah I suppose operating agriculture equipment and farming some crops digitally could be kinda cosy?"

after getting an email from Steam telling me it's on sale. 🚜👨‍🌾

Got it!

It's a funny looking thing and might not be great for if I ever go climbing hills on my sportier bike - but I've not done that for a long time now. I'll keep the old one for that distant eventuality 😅

In case anyone wants to know, it's a medium Specialized Tone, heavily reduced at the moment, scores five stars in the Virginia Tech tests, has MIPS.

christian,
@christian@aldr.social avatar

@sarajw @lukem I don't know how many mirror selfies you share here, but that window film one in reply to a post I made a few weeks back was choice 🪞🤳👌

Am I crazy, or isn’t there a way to boost a post from another account in Mona? I seem to remember doing it. Long pressing the boost icon triggers that in Ivory, I thought it did the same in Mona.

christian,
@christian@aldr.social avatar

@maique Weird, it seems to have gone? I also remember long pressing the boost icon and selecting which logged in account to boost from. Now it’s not working.

We got our first 29°C today, and being sat next to the window I felt the blackout curtain just slowly radiate off heat onto my face 🥵

It's a bit drug-den vibes but I hear foil in the windows can help reflect away some of that heat? 👀

christian,
@christian@aldr.social avatar

@sarajw Been thinking of this! A bit worried to try it though as I wouldn't want to risk any damage/residue on the window after we leave (knowing my luck the sun will melt it on 😅, especially when we push 40°C)

Learning that it's glue free is interesting though! do you know how easy it might be to remove?

My initial plan was to get some thin wood panels and foil up one side. We have about 7m of window, so I can live with 2-3m hidden (Where we currently have blackout curtains)

christian,
@christian@aldr.social avatar

@sarajw Interesting, thanks! Going to try to find a good one this weekend and give it a go. We do have a sun shade to install too but it's not long enough to cover the entire side, so we'll place that in one corner to take the edge off where we film things.

All the other windows in this place have shutters which we do use, it's just this conservatory space which we've turned into the office that's been a problem.

Should only be for a year or so, then we hope to move to Northern'ish Sweden 😊

christian,
@christian@aldr.social avatar

@sarajw So far we're looking between Sundsvall and Skellefteå in terms of latitude, with remote house in the forests near towns like Sollefteå and Östersund 😊

And nice - anywhere special you'd visit?

Re-recording done for our first YouTube video for the board game project! (Our first one one had to get scrapped because we were out of focus for the whole thing 😅)

I've never been in front of the camera before talking like this, so it's really taken the energy out of me. Anxiety, imposter syndrome, hating how my voice sounds? All that good stuff. Now to chuck 48GB worth of footage into Final Cut and see what I can turn it into 👀

christian,
@christian@aldr.social avatar

@jake4480 Nice! yeah I hope it gets better with practice 😅 and interesting, didn't know that.

Time to sell the Steam Deck - it was a great little gaming machine but I don't think I've used it in over a year 😬 and I can't see myself choosing to play on it any time soon either.

I've not really priced it yet, but if anyone is interested buying a 64GB Steam Deck (Upgraded to a 512GB NVMe) with case and docking station, you can send me a private message. It'll be shipped from Portugal.

Uh oh, I'm looking into note taking apps again. 👀

christian,
@christian@aldr.social avatar

@jake4480 Tried Obsidian, loved it for a bit before I noticed I hadn't really done much productive with it and instead just spent lots of time customizing it with plugins and custom CSS styles.

Perhaps I need to give it another try, just without all the extra stuff going on.

christian, to affinity
@christian@aldr.social avatar

My pessimism for the Affinity acquisition was perhaps too strong yesterday?

Today I got this in my email, four pledges - here is a quote from the first

"If we do offer a subscription, it will only ever be as an option alongside the perpetual model, for those who prefer it. This fits with enabling Canva users to start adopting Affinity."

If they can stick to pledge 1, of always offering a perpetual license, then I can be happy with that.

christian,
@christian@aldr.social avatar

@hamatti Yeah :( I worry that's going to happen again.

Guess we'll just have to wait and see, but I think instead of stagnating in negative vibes I'm just going to keep on keeping on with using the tools for as long as I can.

christian, to affinity
@christian@aldr.social avatar

Waking up to an email from Affinity today has put me in a miserable mood. They've been acquired by Canva.

I can't help feeling this software will go the way of subscriptions or enshitification as they blend the two together while adding in some AI for good measure 😔
